The LrT gene for resistance to leaf rust present in the common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) backcross line RL 6049, and originally derived from the cultivar Terenzio, was shown to be on chromosome 4B. Farther analysis indicated that it is on the long arm of this chromosome, 2.9 ± 1.3 crossover units from the centromere. It is independent of or loosely linked with Sr7a, a gene for stem rust resistance known to be on the long arm of chromosome 4B. It is inherited independently of leaf rust resistance genes Lr1, Lr2a, Lr3, Lr10, Lr14b, Lr16, Lr17 and Lr18. LrT has been redesignated Lr30.

The Canadian wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivar Pasqua has good resistance to leaf rust (Puccinia recondita Rob. ex Desm.) and some sprouting resistance. Backcross F2 families were used to study the inheritance of leaf rust resistance in Pasqua. Based on the leaf rust resistance genotypes of its parents, Pasqua could have genes Lr11, Lr13, Lr14b, Lr16, Lr22, and Lr30. Of these, it was found to have Lr11, Lr13, Lr14b, and Lr30. As well, it has Lr34, which must have come from the cultivar Terenzio during the development of a Neepawa backcross line with Lr30. Key words: Triticum aestivum, wheat, leaf rust resistance

The gene for adult-plant resistance to race 9 of leaf rust (Puccinia recondita Rob. ex. Desm.) in the common wheat cultivar Thatcher (Triticum aestivum L.) was allelic to Lr22a, a gene for adult-plant leaf rust resistance previously transferred to hexaploid wheat from Aegilops squarrosa L. This gene, designated Lr22b, was linked with Tg, a gene for tenacious glumes, and W21, an inhibitor of waxy foliage, both known to be on chromosome arm 2Dα and linked with Lr22a.

T. miguschovae (GGAADD) was used as a “genetic bridge” to transfer valuable traits to the common wheat instead T. militina and Ae. tauschii. Lines with resistance to leaf rust, yellow rust and powdery mildew, as well as with high protein content (17–18 %) were selected. The lines with translocation Т2BL.2BS-2GL, 5BS.5BL-5GL, T6BS.6BL-6GL and substitution of chromosomes 1D(1Dt), 4D(4Dt), 5D(5Dt), 6D(6Dt) were identified. DNA analysis revealed that the lines can carry leaf rust resistance genes that are different from the known Lr39 and Lr50. Introgression lines have been successfully used in breeding. Five common winter wheat cultivars are developed.

Backcross lines of gene LrT2 for resistance to leaf rust in the common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) 'Thatcher' unexpectedly show improved resistance to stem rust compared with that of the recurrent parent. Genetic–cytogenetic evidence indicates that LrT2 is on chromosome 7D, which is known to carry the "suppressor" gene(s) that prevent the expression of stem rust resistance conferred by other genes in 'Canthatch'. Thus, LrT2 may be a nonsuppressing allele of the suppressor gene(s) or be closely linked to such an allele. LrT2 has been designated Lr34. Key words: Triticum, wheat, rust resistance.

The article presents the results of the characterization of 277 lines of common wheat developed in the National Center of Grain named after P.P. Lukyanenko by the presence of molecular markers linked to leaf rust resistance genes Lr9, Lr19, Lr24, Lr37, Lr26. Lines with Lr9 and Lr19 were not identified. We detected 52 lines carrying Lr24; 80 lines with Lr26; 141 lines with Lr37. Lines carrying a combination of leaf rust resistance genes were selected using molecular markers. The presence of a combination of Lr37 + Lr26 was established in 31 lines. The combination of Lr24 + Lr26 was detected in 12 lines. Line 125-15 Ms 2 carries a combination of Lr37 + Lr24. A pyramid of three genes was found in the line 144-15 Ms 2. Currently, the selected lines are widely involved in the breeding process.
