Littoral Zoobenthic Biomass in Lakes, and Its Relationship to Physical, Chemical, and Trophic Factors

The hypothesis that littoral morphometry exerts a strong effect on zoobenthic biomass was tested in Lake Memphremagog, Quebec–Vermont, by regression analysis of the relationship between littoral zoobenthic biomass and littoral slope, exposure (Lake area visible from sampling site), and trophic status (micrograms of chlorophyll a per litre). Eighty-one percent of the variance in Log littoral zoobenthic biomass (LZB) could be explained by[Formula: see text]When the predictions from this relationship were compared with littoral zoobenthos estimates from other lakes, residuals were positively correlated with the calcium concentration of the water (r = 0.41) and negatively correlated with the chloride concentration (r = −0.51). The regression equation obtained for all of the sites was[Formula: see text]and explained 80% of the variation in Log LZB. Sites situated within deltas from stream inflows did not differ significantly from these that did not (ANCOVA), indicating that coarse allochthonous input from these fluvial sources was not a major factor determining littoral zoobenthic biomass in these lakes.

One hundred four healthy premature infants, of birth weight 1,000 to 1,800 gm, were fed one of five feedings: (1) human milk; (2) human milk plus 13 meq/l of sodium chloride; (3) human milk plus 13 meq/l of sodium chloride and 18 meq/l of potassium chloride; (4) a half-skimmed cows milk formula; and (5) a partially-skimmed vegetable oil, cows milk formula. The infants fed any of the three human milk formulas gained weight at a slower rate than the infants fed either of the two cows milk formulas. Infants whose diets were changed from unmodified human milk to the half-skimmed cows milk gained large amounts of weight, and at times were visibly edematous. Infants whose diets were changed from the human milks with added sodium chloride, to the half-skimmed cows milk, gained lesser amounts of weight and did not become edematous. The infants fed the two cows milk diets gained similar amounts of weight, although one diet provided 6.5 gm/kg/day, the other 3.1 gm/kg/day of protein.

A survey of 12 lakes in Minnesota, USA, was conducted to examine the factors controlling variability in biodegradable dissolved organic carbon (BDOC) concentration. The principal question addressed was whether BDOC concentration was more strongly related to lake trophic status or morphometric parameters. BDOC concentration was determined by incubating filtered lake water for a period of 15 months and fitting an exponential decay curve to measured DOC concentrations. BDOC concentrations varied from 73 to 427 µmol C·L–1 and composed 15%–63% of the total DOC pool. There were no significant correlations between BDOC and measures of lake trophic status. Instead, BDOC was most closely associated with the percentage of lake area covered by littoral zone, suggesting a significant source of BDOC from aquatic macrophytes and lake surface sediments.

ObjectivesResearch conducted at the University of Puerto Rico noted that beef with elevated pH values (> 5.86) resulted in more tender meat (P ≤ 0.05). It has been established that proteolytic degradation mechanisms can be influenced by pH and calcium concentration in muscle. Beef with pH values ≥ 5.86 is classified as Dark Firm and Dry (DFD) but there are negative implications associated with greater pH values. However, observations indicating increased tenderness with increased pH raise the question: can variations in pH be associated with differences in sarcomere length (SL) and free calcium concentration (FCC)? Therefore, the objectives of this project were to: (1) document pH distribution; (2) determine the incidence of DFD; and (3) evaluate the relationship between pH, SL, and FCC in commercial cattle harvested in Puerto Rico.Materials and MethodsLongissimus lumborum samples (n = 51) were obtained and background information was noted including number of permanent incisors (PI), type (Dairy or Beef), and gender. The pH values were used to categorize beef into the following groups: Low (≤ 5.40), Normal (5.41 to 5.59), High (5.60 to 5.85) and DFD (≥ 5.86). Meat was flash frozen, powdered, and placed on a microscope slide and a Helium-Neon laser was used to determine SL. A subset of samples was sent off and prepared at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for FCC quantification (Ward Laboratories; Kearney, NE) with an inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometer (iCAP 6500 Radial; Thermo Electron, Cambridge, UK). All statistical analyses were conducted in SAS (9.4). The Proc FREQ was used to determine pH category distributions and incidence of DFD. The Proc GLIMMIX and Tukey adjustment (α = 0.05) were used to determine the effects of number of PI, type, and gender on pH category, SL and FCC. The Proc CORR was used to evaluate the relationship between pH category, SL and FCC.ResultsThe pH category distribution for the current samples was as follows: 3.92% Low, 41.18% Normal, 35.29% High and 19.61% DFD. The SL ranged from 1.69 to 1.46 mm with an average of 1.53 mm. The FCC ranged from 132.19 to 31.39 mM with an average of 64.23 mM. Longer sarcomeres were detected in cattle with eight and zero PI (1.57 and 1.56 mm, respectively); cattle with two and four PI had intermediate SL (1.53 and 1.52 mm, respectively), and cattle with six PI had the shortest sarcomeres (1.51 mm; P = 0.03). Dairy cattle had longer sarcomeres relative to beef cattle (1.56 vs. 1.52 mm; P = 0.02). Dairy cattle tended to have increased FCC relative to beef cattle (70.72 vs. 58.38 mM; P = 0.08). Also, FCC tended to be greater within the Normal and Low pH categories relative to the High and DFD categories (72.36 vs. 57.31 mM; P = 0.06). The SL and FCC had no relationship (P > 0.05) within the Low, Normal and High pH categories. However, DFD beef had longer SL (0.78; P = 0.01), while having decreased FCC (–0.66; P = 0.04).ConclusionOver half (54.90%) of the beef samples analyzed fell into the High and DFD pH categories, with nearly 20% being classified as DFD. Although, a clear relationship was not established between SL and FCC within the Low, Normal or High pH categories, the results indicate that the increased pH in samples surpassing the DFD threshold correspond to longer sarcomeres and decreased free calcium.

This study was performed using the SeLaR information system (IS). SeLaR IS combines relevant data on reservoirs in Serbia and enables advanced methods of analysis, such as statistical analysis and data mining. For the data analysis, three accumulations with different morphometric properties, trophic status, and dominant community of microorganisms were selected: Gruža, Grošnica, and Bovan. The material in this research is data sets that include standard routine and broader scientific hydrobiological tests of freshwater from certain periods. The data include physicochemical, biochemical, microbiological, and other biological parameters. The analysis aimed to determine the relationship between the entities, to discover unknown relations, the regularity in the dynamics of the specific characteristics, and for predictions. Classification, analysis of influential parameters, and scenario analysis were used for this analysis. The results indicate a clear classification of the values of the total number of bacteria. The obtained models have a small number of influential parameters (one to four) with a large relative impact for each class separately. Influence parameters are different for distinct accumulations. For prediction of the total number of bacteria selected tools did not provide satisfactory results for all three reservoirs.

The binding of calcium to human plasma albumin, alpha, beta, and gamma globulins was studied with the aid of an ultracentrifuge. The amount of calcium bound to these separated proteins was determined in solutions with electrolyte concentrations and pH within physiological ranges. The total calcium concentration was 2.35–2.90 mm/liter H2O and the total protein concentration was 3.91–4.29 g/100 ml H2O. In these solutions no significant differences were found for the binding of calcium (expressed as mm Ca++ bound per gram protein) by albumin, alpha, and beta globulins; the average values obtained were, respectively, 0.016, 0.018, and 0.023. Significantly less calcium was bound by gamma globulin; 0.009 mm/gram. The pH was varied between 7.200–7.550 and the sodium chloride concentration between 114–157 mEq Na per liter. Abstract We examined the relation between chloride concentration and the area of complexed chloride of Medtronic's Cystic Fibrosis Indicator System, using a high-resolution x-y coordinated digitizer to measure the circumference of the chloride precipitation ring. These digitized points were entered directly into an IBM PC computer, where the area of the chloride precipitation was calculated with use of a repetitive rectangular estimation program. Using these data, we determined the relationship between the area of chloride precipitation and the chloride concentration of the standard NaCl solutions. When the area of the ring of chloride precipitation in the system's patch is measured immediately after the sweat test is completed, the concentration of chloride in the sweat can be calculated with a reproducibility equal to that of the Gibson-Cooke sweat test.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the mineral concentrations in the hoof horny capsule of healthy Holstein cows and cows with hoof problems associated with laminitis. Twenty-one multiparous Holstein cows with an average production of 24 L of milk/day, reared with semi-extensive nutritional management, were studied. The animals were evaluated and divided into two groups based on their locomotion score (LS, range: 0 to 4). LS greater than 2 indicated laminitis-associated lesions (lame cow group: LC), and LS = 0 indicated cows without laminitis (CWL). A sample of 30 mm2 was collected from the hoof horny capsule at the abaxial wall to evaluate the concentrations of calcium, phosphorus, zinc, and magnesium. Calcium blood concentration was also evaluated. The LC group had lower magnesium concentration (P=0.008) and showed a trend (P=0.06) for lower calcium concentration compared to healthy animals (CWL), even though all animals were normocalcemic. The concentration of other minerals did not differ between the LC and CWL group. In conclusion, the magnesium concentration in the hoof horny capsule was lower in cows with lesions associated with laminitis, while phosphorus and zinc concentrations were not affected. The relationship between hoof lesions and calcium concentration requires further investigation.
