The Role of Zooplankton in the Accumulation and Deposition of DuPont Edgemoor Waste (an Acid-Iron Waste) at a Deepwater Dumpsite in the Northwest Atlantic

DuPont Edgemoor waste derived from titanium dioxide production is a highly acidic solution of ferric chloride containing relatively high levels of several trace metals including Cr, V, Pb, Ni, Cu, and Cd. Approximately 3 × 105 t∙yr−1 are dumped at Deepwater Dumpsite 106, ~160 km southeast of Ambrose Light, New York. Chemical dispersion studies at the dumpsite indicate that ferric oxide precipitates in the waste plume and that other trace metals may become associated with this particulate phase. Ingestion of this particulate phase by copepods is a significant route of uptake for the waste-derived metals in the laboratory. Accumulation of the various metals by exposed copepods ranged from 10.8% above control values for Fe to 54.7% for Cu. The ratios of the various trace metals relative to Fe were only slightly enhanced in exposed copepods in comparison with control copepods but 1 to 2 orders of magnitude higher than the metal ratios of a 105 waste dilution. Enhancement of metal concentrations in fecal pellets produced by exposed copepods ranged from 25.0% above control values for Fe to 60.3% for Cu. Metal deposition through fecal pellet production appears to be an effective means of depurating Fe, Pb, Ni, and Cu by copepods exposed to Edgemoor waste but not for Cd, which could not be detected in fecal pellets. The greater density of fecal pellets compared with the ferric oxide particles could result in a more rapid sinking rate of waste-derived metals to the deep ocean. The flux of waste-derived metals through Zooplankton biomass and the contribution of Zooplankton in the biogeochemical cycling of metals at Deepwater Dumpsite 106 suggests that biological processes may be as important as advective processes in determining the fate of waste-derived metals.

Abstract. In a changing ocean there is a critical need to understand global biogeochemical cycling, particularly regarding carbon. We have made strides in understanding upper ocean dynamics, but the deep ocean interior (> 1000 m) is still largely unknown, despite representing the overwhelming majority of Earth's biosphere. Here we present a method for estimating deep-pelagic zooplankton biomass on an ocean-basin scale. In so doing we have made several new discoveries about the Atlantic, which likely apply to the World Ocean. First, zooplankton biomass in the upper bathypelagic domain is higher than expected, representing an inverted biomass pyramid. Second, the majority of this biomass comprises macroplanktonic shrimps, which have been historically underestimated. These findings, coupled with recent findings of increased global deep-pelagic fish biomass, revise our perspective on the role of the deep-pelagic fauna in oceanic biogeochemical cycling.

Medical students depend on illustration to learn anatomical facts and details that may be too subtle for the written or spoken word. For surgical disciplines, learners rely on tools such as language, 2-dimensional illustrations, and 3-dimensional models to pass on important concepts. Although a photograph can convey factual information, illustration can highlight and educate the pertinent details for understanding surgical procedures, neurovascular structures, and the pathological disease processes. In order to understand the current role of medical illustration in education, one needs to look to the past to see how art has helped solve communication dilemmas when learning medicine. This paper focuses on Max Brodel (1870-1941), a German-trained artist who eventually immigrated to the United States to pursue his career as a medical illustrator. Shortly after his arrival in Baltimore, Brodel made significant contributions to medical illustration in Gynecology at John Hopkins University, and eventually in other fields of medicine such as Urology and Otolaryngology. Brodel is recognized as one of America’s most distinguished medical illustrators for creating innovative artistic techniques and founding the profession of medical illustration. Today, animated computer based art is synergistically used with medical illustration to educate students about anatomy. Some of the changes that have occurred with the advancement of computer technology will be highlighted and compared to a century ago, when illustrations were used for teaching anatomy due to the scarcity of cadavers. Its been long recognized that various economies of the world are interlinked through international trade. The experience of the past several years, however, has demonstrated that this economic interdependence is far greater than was previously realized. In this context, the importance of international economic theory as an area distinct from general economics hardly needs any mentioning. What gives international economic theory this distinction is international markets for some goods and effects of national sovereignty on the character of economic activity. Wilfred Ethier's book, which incorporates recent developments in the field, is an excellent addition to textbooks on international economics for one- or twosemester undergraduate courses. The book mostly covers standard topics. A distinguishing feature of this book is its detailed analysis of the flexible exchange rates and a discussion of the various approaches used for their determination. Within each chapter, the author has extensively used facts, figures and major events to clarify the concepts in the light of the theoretical framework. The book also discusses, in a fair amount of detail, the existing international monetary system and the role of various international organizations.

This book provides the first detailed account of the role of revolutionary justice in the early Soviet state. Law has often been dismissed by historians as either unimportant after the October Revolution amid the violence and chaos of civil war or even, in the absence of written codes and independent judges, little more than another means of violence. This is particularly true of the most revolutionary aspect of the new justice system, revolutionary tribunals—courts inspired by the French Revolution and established to target counter-revolutionary enemies. This book paints a more complex picture. The Bolsheviks invested a great deal of effort and scarce resources into building an extensive system of tribunals that spread across the country, including into the military and the transport network. At their peak, hundreds of tribunals heard hundreds of thousands of cases every year. Not all ended in harsh sentences: some were dismissed through lack of evidence; others given a wide range of sentences; others still suspended sentences; and instances of early release and amnesty were common. This book, therefore, argues that law played a distinct and multifaceted role for the Bolsheviks. Tribunals stood at the intersection between law and violence, offering various advantages to the Bolsheviks, not least strengthening state control, providing a more effective means of educating the population on counter-revolution, and enabling a more flexible approach to the state’s enemies. All of this adds to our understanding of the early Soviet state and, ultimately, of how the Bolsheviks held on to power.

The Conclusion briefly examines the current state of the New York City Ballet under the auspices of industrial billionaire David H. Koch at Lincoln Center. In so doing, it to introduces a series of questions, warranting still more exploration, about the rapid and profound evolution of the structure, funding, and role of the arts in America through the course of the twentieth century. It revisits the historiographical problem that drives Making Ballet American: the narrative that George Balanchine was the sole creative genius who finally created an “American” ballet. In contrast to that hagiography, the Conclusion reiterates the book’s major contribution: illuminating the historical construction of our received idea of American neoclassical ballet within a specific set of social, political, and cultural circumstances. The Conclusion stresses that the history of American neoclassicism must be seen as a complex narrative involving several authors and discourses and crossing national and disciplinary borders: a history in which Balanchine was not the driving force, but rather the outcome.
