A General Approach to the Culture of Planktonic Rotifers

A general method for establishing cultures of planktonic rotifers from natural waters is described. Algal isolates are tested for their suitability as food for rotifers collected from the same source and season. Rotifer clones displaying the highest reproductive rates under the given culture conditions are selected for the final culture system. This procedure yielded indefinite cultures for the eulimnetic species, Asplanchna priodonta, A. herricki, Polyarthra major, and Synchaeta pectinata, and appears to have a good probability of success when the diet of a species is unknown. Algal isolates from the same source as the rotifers produced better results than algae obtained from commercial sources. Cryptomonad species produced the most consistent positive responses in growth and reproduction of rotifers tested.Key words: rotifers, zooplankton culture, Asplanchna, Polyarthra, Synchaeta, Cryptomonas

Formulae have been obtained that are necessary to calculate cumulative deformation in the process of straitened extrusion in the central area closed to the working end of the counterpunch. The general method of plastic flow proposed by A. L. Vorontsov was used. The obtained formulae allow one to determine the deformed state of a billet in any point of the given area. The formulae should be used to take into account the strengthening of the extruded material.

Recently, there has been consistent growth in Android applications (apps). Under these circumstances, software maintenance for Android apps becomes an essential and important task. The core of software maintenance is to locate bugs in source files. Previous bug localization approaches mainly focus on open-source desktop software (e.g. Eclipse, Mozilla, GCC). Even though a few studies locate the bugs in the Android apps, they are dedicated to a special app named ZXing, without developing a general method to locate the bugs in Android apps by taking into account the unique characteristics of Android apps’ bug reports. Such characteristics include fewer number of historical bug reports, insufficient detailed description, etc. These characteristics hinder existing localization approaches from being directly delivered to Android apps, because lack of enough information degrades the performance of those localization approaches relying on historical bug reports. Commit messages include more informative data which can provide the details of reported bugs. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a novel information retrieval-based approach which utilizes commit messages to locate new bugs in Android apps. This approach not only considers the structured textual similarity between the given bug and the candidate source files, but also computes the unstructured textual similarities between the new bug and the commit messages linked to the corresponding source files. According to the experimental results on 10 popular open-source Android apps managed by GitHub, our approach outperforms the state-of-the-art bug localization methods that include BugLocator, BLUiR, and two-phase model.

A morphological and anatomical study of the mycorrhizas on Pinus strobus L. was conducted on seedlings excavated from St.-Williams nursery in southern Ontario. Micro- and macro-scopic characters were used to classify the morphotypes into complexes and, when possible, genera and species. An E-strain fungus, fungi from the Mycelium radicis atrovirens (MRA) complex, and an unidentified ascomycetous "red-type" fungus formed ectendomycorrhizal (EECM) associations, while Tuber sp., Hebeloma sp., and Thelephora terrestris formed ectomycorrhizal (ECM) associations in the nursery. Cultures of Hebeloma sp., the E-strain fungus, Tuber sp., and two morphologically distinct MRA fungi (MRA1, later identified as Phialophora finlandia Wang & Wilcox, and MRA2, unidentified) were isolated from field-collected morphotypes and re-inoculated onto Pinus strobus seedlings grown in semisterile pot cultures for 4 months. In the resynthesis experiment, the E-strain fungus formed EECM with sparse intracellular colonization, and Tuber sp. formed ECM with characteristic cystidia and densely packed mantles, as they had in the field. However, unlike the MRA field specimens, Phialophora finlandia formed ECM in pot culture. Hebeloma sp., normally an ECM former with conifer seedlings, did not form mycorrhizal structures under the given culture conditions, and neither did the MRA2 isolate. One of the main criteria for river water quality is overall hardness, the value of which determines its suitability for use in various sectors of the national economy.Availability of the many-year information about the magnitude of the overall hardness of the river waters of the Republic of Tatarstan served as the basis for analyzing its changes in time and space. As an integral indicator, the average annual value of the overall hardness is chosen, the distribution of which throughout the territory of the Republic is clearly reflected in the given skeleton maps. A comparative analysis of the total hardness of river waters, observed in the XX and XXI centuries, showed that its value remained within the category of moderate, medium hardness and hard waters, but there was a redistribution of these values in space. Since the formation of rigidity largely depends on local features of the territory and, first of all, on the heterogeneity of the geological structure of the basin, the analysis of its changes was made commensurate with the geological structure of the three large geographical regions of the Republic of Tatarstan − Pre-Volga, Pre-Kama and Zakamye.The formation of hardness is also influenced by the anthropogenic factor. In the zone of influence of large reservoirs, created in the territory of the Republic of Tatarstan, a rise in the level of groundwater is observed, changing not only the nature of the underground supply of water bodies of the Republic, but also the quality of river water. The redistribution of general hardness in the south-east of the republic is connected with the activities of oil enterprises, which make significant adjustments to the hydro/chemical composition of natural waters.

We introduce the cosine-type approximation processes in abstract Banach space setting. The historical roots of these processes go back to W. W. Rogosinski in 1926. The given new definitions use a cosine operator functions concept. We proved that in presented setting the cosine-type operators possess the order of approximation, which coincide with results known in trigonometric approximation. Moreover, a general method for factorization of certain linear combinations of cosine operator functions is presented. The given method allows to find the order of approximation using the higher order modulus of continuity. Also applications for the different type of approximations are given.

This paper is concerned with an ideal spin-l/2-HEisENBERG-model for thin ferromagnetic films. A general method is given for the calculation of the one-spinwave eigenstates and their spectrum in dependence on the lattice type and the orientation of the surfaces of the film. The function that characterises the shape of the spinwave perpendicular to the film must fulfil a linear eigenvalue-difference-equation as well as a set of boundary conditions.For next-neighbour interactions this system may be evaluated for an especially simple case. For it spinwavestates of the form of cos-sin-functions as well as surface states are found. Their momenta are given by some transcendental equations, which are discussed.For all other cases the given difference-equation cannot be solved in a closed form, but at any rate it is a starting point for numerical calculations.In a subsequent paper it will be shown that the special case mentioned above covers some important surface orientations of the cubic lattice types. For films of these orientations the dependence of the magnetization on temperature and thickness of the film will be derived from the spinwave spectra.

AbstractDuckweeds are floating plants of the family Lemnaceae, comprising 5 genera and 36 species. They typically live in ponds or lakes and are found worldwide, except the polar regions. There are two duckweed subfamilies—namely Lemnoidea and Wolffioideae, with 15 and 21 species, respectively. Additionally, they have characteristic reproduction methods. Several metabolites have also been reported in various duckweeds. Duckweeds have a wide range of adaptive capabilities and are particularly suitable for experiments requiring high productivity because of their speedy growth and reproduction rates. Duckweeds have been studied for their use as food/feed resources and pharmaceuticals, as well as for phytoremediation and industrial applications. Because there are numerous duckweed species, culture conditions should be optimized for industrial applications. Here, we review and summarize studies on duckweed species and their utilization, metabolites, and cultivation methods to support the extended application of duckweeds in future.
