The otolith method of aging capelin (Mallotus villosus) from the estuary and western Gulf of St. Lawrence was validated. Hyaline zones are deposited annually in the late fall and winter and thus can be used in age determination. Back-calculated mean length at the first hyaline zone corresponded well with the average length of capelin larvae collected in November and this zone is interpreted as the first annulus. The mean size at the second hyaline zone corresponded exactly with the length at which capelin undergo a profound metamorphosis. This second hyaline zone, which is laid down in the summer of the 2nd yr, was thus interpreted to be a metamorphic check. The third hyaline zone, deposited at a mean length of 95 mm, which corresponded with the peak in the length frequency distribution (when allowance was made for growth), was interpreted as the second annulus. Analysis of two otolith aging techniques currently used suggests that the "Newfoundland" method misinterprets the metamorphic check as the first annulus, rejecting the true first annulus as a "larval check,” a feature having no biological basis in fact. This results in correct ages, but estimates of lengths at the first annulus are exaggerated. The "Greenland" or "Danish" method may misinterpret the metamorphic check as the second annulus thereby resulting in erroneous ages. Key words: capelin, Mallotus villosus, otoliths, age verification, Gulf of St. Lawrence

Abstract Objectives The current study aimed to evaluate the effects of Ficus carica latex on the treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), induced by Leishmania major. A 5% topical gel with F. carica latex was prepared. BALB/c mice were infected by inoculation of amastigotes form of L. major. Thirty BALB/c mice were divided into five groups, where the first group was treated daily, the second group twice per day, and the third group every other day with the 5% topical gel, for 3 weeks. The sizes of the lesions were measured before and during the course of treatment. Results Although the mean size of lesions in the mice group treated with the 5% F. carica gel, especially in the group receiving daily treatment, was less than the mean size of the lesions in the control group, yet, the differences was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). The findings of the current study demonstrated that the 5% F. carica latex with a 3-week course of treatment had no considerable effect in recovery or control of CL induced by L. major in the murine model. Using higher concentration of F. carica latex and with longer treatment lengths may increase its efficacy in the treatment of CL.

During 1998 and 1999, the impact of predation by herring gulls (Larus argentatus) and great black-backed gulls (Larus marinus) on breeding success of black-legged kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla) at Gull Island, Witless Bay, southeastern Newfoundland, was quantified in relation to the timing of the annual arrival of capelin (Mallotus villosus) to spawn. The frequency of predation attempts by large gulls on kittiwakes was compared among three periods: before the mean hatching date for herring gulls, between the mean hatching date for herring gulls and the arrival of the capelin, and following capelin arrival. The frequency varied significantly among the three periods, being highest after gull chicks hatched but before the capelin arrived. The frequency of gull predation was significantly correlated with the percentage of kittiwake eggs and chicks that disappeared each week. We estimated that 43 and 30% of kittiwake eggs and chicks at Gull Island were taken by gulls in 1998 and 1999, respectively. Kittiwakes have been indirectly (through increased predation by gulls) affected by the delayed arrival and lower abundance of capelin in recent years, which underlines the need to understand multispecies interactions when interpreting the effects of human alteration of the marine environment.

During the period of October 1975-January 1976 a study on the correlation between induration size of BCG vaccination and Mantoux test using 5 TU PPD-S has been undertaken on 1.100 non-BCG vaccinated children. Good correlation between induration, size of BCG vaccination and Mantoux test performed simultaneously were observed, particularly on the third day of examination, with the correlation equation of y=4.97 + 0.69X, and a coefficient of correlation = 0.99. Significant differences on the mean size of BCG induration on each Mantoux test group were also observed. The mean size of BCG induration in subjects showing Mantoux test of less than 5mm., 5-9mm., and 10mm. and over were 6.07mm., 12.20mm., and 16.69mm. respectively, while the standard deviation were 2.71mm., 3.65mm., and 4.31mm. respectively. It seems that BCG indication of 8mm. (3rd day) could be taken as an indication for further diagnostic studies in the early case finding of tuberculosis in children, especially in rural areas. However, further study on the correlation of BCG induration and the incidence of tuberculosis is still required.

From the study of samples of capelin in their first year it was established that scales are acquired when the fish are a little less than one year old and range in size from 7.2 to 10.0 cm. total (extreme tip) length. Length frequency and age data indicate that there is great variation between the growth rates of the various year-classes.From the Grand Bank 96% of the mature males and 99.6% of the mature females were three years old. No five-year-old fish were found on the Grand Bank. The average total lengths of mature capelin from bank and shore areas are quite similar. The male capelin has a total length greater than that of the female. This difference increases from 0.22 cm. for one-year-old fish to 2.32 cm. for three-year-old spawning fish.

The exploitation of banana prawn (Penaeus merguiensis De Man, 1888) in Kotabaru Waters need management strategy, so the prawn fisheries in Kotabaru waters could be sustainably exploited. The important information needed for its basis management are was biological aspects of banana prawn. The aim of this research were to study about length frequency, length-weight relationship, maturity stages and length at first first mature of banana prawn in Kotabaru Waters. The research was conducted at landing site of prawn in Kotabaru and the samples were collected in January – November 2016. The method used for sampling was random sampling. The results showed that the size of banana prawn tend to become smaller with the size between 14-46 mmCL and the mean size were 26 ± 3,7 mmCL for male and 28,5 ± 5,3 mmCL for female. The growth pattern of banana prawn was allometric negative and the weights decreased from the previous years. The highest proportion of mature prawns was in March, likely suggestes to be the spawning season of banana prawn. Length at first captured of banana prawns (Lc = 28,1 mmCL) was lower than length at first matured (Lm = 35,3 mmCL) so most of prawns captured has not spawn yet. For sustainability of banana prawn resources in Kotabaru Waters, it is suggested to close fishing season in March and minimum legal size should be bigger than 35 mmCL or less than 27 prawns in 1 kg.

Aims: The purpose of this study was to evaluate excision and open granulation versus excision and primary closure as treatments for pilonidal sinus. Subjects and methods: We evaluated a group of 141 patients operated on for a pilonidal sinus between 1991 and 1995. Ninety patients were treated by excision and open granulation, 34 patients by excision and primary closure and 17 patients by incision and drainage, as a unique treatment of an infected pilonidal sinus. Results: The first group, receiving treatment of excision and open granulation, experienced the following outcomes: average length of hospital stay, four days; average healing time; 72 days; average number of post-operative ambulatory visits, 40; average off-work delay, 38 days; and average follow-up time, 43 months. There were five recurrences (6%) in this group during the follow-up period. For the second group treated by excision and primary closure, the corresponding outcome measurements were as follows: average length of hospital stay, four days; average healing time, 23 days; primary healing failure rate, 9%; average number of post-operative ambulatory visits, 6; average off-work delay, 21 days. The average follow-up time was 34 months, and two recurrences (6%) were observed during the follow-up period. In the third group, seventeen patients benefited from an incision and drainage as unique treatment. The mean follow-up was 37 months. Five recurrences (29%) were noticed, requiring a new operation in all the cases. Discussion and conclusion: This series of 141 patients is too limited to permit final conclusions to be drawn concerning significant advantages of one form of treatment compared to the other. Nevertheless, primary closure offers the advantages of quicker healing time, fewer post-operative visits and shorter time off work. When a primary closure can be carried out, it should be routinely considered for socio-economical and comfort reasons.

Abstract Background and aims: Gestational diabetes represents a form of diabetes diagnosed during pregnancy that is not clearly overt diabetes. In the last trimester of gestation the growth of fetoplacental unit takes place, thus maternal hyperglycemia will determine an increased transplacental passage, hyperinsulinemia and fetal macrosomia. The aim of our study was that o analyzing the effect of maternal glycemia from the last trimester of pregnancy over fetal weight. Material and method: We run an observational study on a group of 46 pregnant women taken into evidence from the first trimester of pregnancy, separated in two groups according to blood glucose determined in the third trimester (before birth): group I normoglycemic and group II with hyperglycemia (>92mg/dl). Results: The mean value of third trimester glycemia for the entire group was of 87.13±22.03. The mean value of the glycemia determined in the third trimester of pregnancy was higher in the second group (109.17 mg/dl) in comparison to the first group (74.,21 mg/dl). The ROC curve for third trimester glycemia as fetal macrosomia appreciation test has an AUC of 0.517. Conclusions: Glycemia determined in the last trimester of pregnancy cannot be used alone as the predictive factor for fetal macrosomia.
