Parasitic Copepods of Sebastodes alutus Including Chondracanthus triventricosus sp.nov. and Colobomatus kyphosus sp.nov.

Sixty-six specimens of Sebastodes alutus, the Pacific ocean perch, collected from the coast of Oregon and British Columbia were examined for parasitic copepods. The six species identified are Chondracanthus pinguis Wilson, 1912, Chondracanthus triventricosus sp.nov., Clavella parva Wilson, 1912, Brachiella robusta (Wilson 1912) Kabata, 1970, Colobomatus kyphosus sp.nov., and Sarcotaces arcticus Collett 1874. Colobomatus kyphosus is the second species of the genus to be described from the eastern Pacific and Ch. triventricosus is the second chondracanthid to be found in nasal cavities. Sarcotaces arcticus is reported as a parasite of S. alutus for the first time. Details of the appendages of each new species are described and illustrated.

A new species,T. strongylatasp. nov. is described on the basis of material collected from the Pacific Ocean. The new species is characterized by the presence of sinuous strongyles. Moreover the incomplete description ofT. simplex(Sarà, 1959) is implemented on the basis of new abundant material allowing, for the first time, the complete description of the skeleton of aTriptolemmaspecies and the detecting of the presence of monaxonic spicules in the spicular complement of the genus. The skeleton is composed of a thick crust of disorderly arranged mesotriaenes and scattered microscleres, supported by diverging spicule tracts formed by oxeas towards the surface. Both species were recorded associated to boring sponges(SpiroxyaandCliona)in excavations of the calcareous scleraxis of precious corals or in organogenic concretions. In the cavities where the tissue ofTriptolemmawas recorded the wall of the excavation partially lost its typical pattern characterized by ovoid scars and became irregularly eroded. Our hypothesis is thatTriptolemmainsinuates inside the erosions produced by other sponges and it is able to enlarge them by an etching mechanism based on chemical dissolution only.

To date, the poecilosclerid sponge genus Pozziella Topsent, 1896 was represented by two species: Pozziella clavisepta Topsent, 1896 and Pozziella aperta (Topsent, 1920), which are presently redescribed. During the campaign SO 144-3a of the project PAGANINI in the Pacific Ocean between the Galapagos Archipelago and Central America, three new species were recovered and are described here: Pozziella cerilla sp. nov., Pozziella neuhausi sp. nov. and Pozziella lueteri sp. nov. The present study led to a revision of the genus and an attempt to resolve the relationships between the species, based on the likeness of spicule complements and biometric characters. A similarity analysis revealed that Atlantic and Pacific species clustered separately. In addition, a key to all species of the genus based on spicular characters is provided.

A list of 169 medusae species in 45 families recorded in Mexican waters is presented for the first time. 86 species (50.8%) were found in the Pacific Ocean, 75 species (44.3%) in the Gulf of Mexico, and 88 (52%) in the Mexican Caribbean Sea. Only 17 species (10%) were common to the three regions. The superclass Hydrozoa, the most diverse one, is represented by 151 species (89%), the Scyphozoa by 16 species (9.5%) and the Cubozoa by 3 (1.8%). Among the Hydrozoa, up to 6 new species have been described from Mexican waters. It is expected that the number of species will grow as surveys that include the hydroid stages and their laboratory-released medusae, as well as benthic and deep-living medusofauna are undertaken in both the Atlantic and the Pacific coasts of Mexico.

The sponge class Homoscleromorpha is a key model for the evolutionary biology of the Metazoa but its diversity remains poorly known. Here we describe six new species of the homoscleromorph family Plakinidae found in shaded habitats (submarine caves, tunnels and overhangs) of New Caledonia and Marquesas Islands, Central-Western Pacific. The new species belong to four genera: Corticium (Corticium vaceleti sp. nov.), Plakina (Plakina finispinata sp. nov.), Plakinastrella (Plakinastrella osculifera sp. nov., Plakinastrella nicoleae sp. nov. and Plakinastrella pseudolopha sp. nov.), and Plakortis (Plakortis ruetzleri sp. nov.). Plakinastrella pseudolopha sp. nov. has a novel spicule type called here ‘pseudolophose spicules’. The diversity of Homoscleromorpha is raised to 50 species in the Pacific Ocean and 120 spp. worldwide.

Five species of the hippolytid shrimp genus Lebbeus White, 1847 are reported from various deep-water hydrothermal ventsites in the Pacific Ocean: L. laurentae Wicksten, 2010 from the East Pacific Rise 13°N; L. wera Ahyong, 2009 from theBrothers Seamount, Kermadec Ridge, New Zealand; L. pacmanus sp. nov. from the Manus Basin, Bismarck Sea; L.shinkaiae sp. nov. from the Okinawa Trough, Japan; and L. thermophilus sp. nov. from the Manus and Lau basins, south-western Pacific. Lebbeus laurentae is fully redescribed because the original and subsequent descriptions are not totallydetailed. Differentiating characters among the three new species and close allies are discussed. Previous records of Lebbeus species from hydrothermal vents are reviewed.

A new species of Mysidium from the eastern tropical Pacific, Mexico, is described, representing the second species of this genus described for the Pacific Ocean and the eighth species reported worldwide. Mysidium pumae sp. nov. is distinguished from the other species of the genus by several characters including: the lanceolate appendix masculina, 3× as long as wide, tapering distally, with a distal tuft of 16 setae and an inner proximal tuft of more than 30 setae, the male pleopod 4 with endopod bearing 3 setae, the exopod with 4 articles, the modified seta from article 3 of the exopod bifid, telson 2.3× as long as wide, distally concave. A table with the main differences among all the known species in the genus is provided.

A new species of Hyalascus is described from the submarine volcanic crater seamount of Andaman Back-arc Basin, Indian Ocean. The genus was previously known in the Pacific Ocean only.
