Pagurus pubescens and a Proposed New Name for a Closely Related Species in the Northwest Atlantic (Decapoda: Anomura)

Reference is made to Krøyer's description of the hermit crab, Pagurus pubescens, and to Stimpson's later description of P. krøyeri. Comparison of specimens of krøyeri with the type specimen of pubescens showed them to be identical. The American species thought by Stimpson to be pubescens and, therefore, left without a name, is now given a name, P. arcuatus. Both species are compared with P. trigonocheirus, and a new diagnostic character, the shape of the anterior division of the third sternite, is used.

ABSTRACT Taxonomic and floristic studies in the state of Rio de Janeiro allowed the rediscovery of Miconia gigantea, an endemic species to the Atlantic Forest, until recently known only from the type specimen, collected over 100 years by A.F.M. Glaziou. We present an amended and detailed description of M. gigantea, providing characteristics of the flowers, fruits and seeds, in addition to illustrations, comments about taxonomic affinities with closely related species, the presently known distribution together with new occurrence records, and the conservation status.

The Brazilian porcupine was one of several species described and illustrated by the 17 th -century naturalist Georg Marcgrave, whose text was among the primary references upon which Linnaeus based his Hystrix prehensilis. As currently understood, Coendou prehensilis is a wide-ranging polytypic taxon that has never been revised and may represent a complex of closely related species. Given that no name-bearing type specimen of C. prehensilis is believed to be extant, and in order to avoid ambiguous application of this name, we designate a specimen collected at the type locality in Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil, as the neotype for Hystrix prehensilis Linnaeus. The geographic distribution of mitochondrial DNA haplotypes suggests that specimens from west-central Brazil previously identified as “Coendou prehensilis” belong to a different species, but only a comprehensive taxonomic revision of the genus will shed light on species limits and the geographic ranges of C. prehensilis and other congeneric forms.

In his paper on the genus Scolops (Kansas University Science Bulletin, Volume XVIII, page 417, 1928), Breakey comes to the conclusion that Scolops cockerelli Fowler is a synonym of Ball's Scolops robustus. On pages 427-428 he records the comparison of specimens of a number of closely related species with the type specimen of Fowler's species by Mr. W. E. China of the British Museum.

The plant that was first called “Odontoglossum wyattianum” by Gurney Wilson was exhibited at a meeting of the Royal Horticultural Society on January 3, 1928. No official description was ever published and no type specimen was ever designated, or has surfaced, hence making this distinct species a taxonomic ‘ghost’. The taxonomic validation of Odontoglossum wyattianum is made here through the designation of a holotype, together with a diagnosis, a brief taxonomic history and comparison with similar and closely related species.

The palaemonid genus Isopericlimenaeus is currently comprised of only the type species, Isopericlimenaeus gorgonidarum, with the diagnostic character of the genus being the presence of a molar and fossa structure on both second chelipeds. Periclimenaeus uropodialis is a closely related species, which has either been considered a synonym of I. gorgonidarum or placed as a valid species in the related genus, Periclimenaeus. During fieldwork in the Philippines, Taiwan and Korea, several species of Periclimenaeus and other sponge associated shrimps belonging to the family Palaemonidae were collected, including I. gorgonidarum and P. uropodialis. Based on a morphological and molecular comparison, it is demonstrated that both taxa are conspecific and that Isopericlimenaeus is a junior synonym of Periclimenaeus.

Wesmaelius (Kimminsia) nanacamilpa Marquez & Contreras, sp. n., a brown lacewing from Tlaxcala state, Mexico is described and illustrated. This is the second recorded species of Wesmaelius from Mexico, and the third from Middle America. Males of the new species may be identified by parameres separate apically, styliform sclerites directed basally, as well as a rounded gonarcus with a short entoprocessus. Females may be distinguished from closely related species by a subgenital plate with the central plate broadly incised basally. There are now 16 species of Wesmaelius known from the New World.

A very small species Euphorbia minuscula (Euphorbiaceae) belonging to subg. Esula is described from the southern, coastal part of South Africa. A key to the closely related species is provided and a new name, E. dumosoides, is published for the illegitimate Euphorbia dumosa E. Mey. ex Boissier. Lectotypes are designated for four names. The synonymy of E. natalensis is extended to include E. epicyparissias and E. crebrifolia.

AbstractThe pupal cremasters of twelve species of Japanese oak-feeding Phyllonorycter are examined. The cremasters, even those of closely related species, are specifically distinct. Combined with descriptions of European and North American species, the present results indicate that the cremaster can be used as a diagnostic character for the species of Phyllonorycter. A new species, P. persimilis, which was previously confused with P. similis Kumata, and the female of P. nipponicella (Issiki), hitherto unknown, are described. The nipponicella complex including these species is reviewed and the speciation of its members is discussed in relation to diversification of the host plant preference.

Recently in checking material in the genus Laphrin apparently two species were found under the name uvltur Osten Sacken. Marston Bates kindly examined the types of uvltur in the Museum of Comparative Zoology and, on verifying my observations, sent part of their material for study. Two of Osten Sacken's specimens ( ♂ ♀ ) are uvltur and the third speciimen is herein described as new, and notes on several other closely related species are given.
