A female specimen of European ling, 115 cm long, caught in Hermitage Bay, Nfld., Lat. 47°33′N, Long. 56°06′W on September 17, 1959, has been identified as the blue ling, Molva byrkelange (Walbaum). This is apparently the first record of this species from the western Atlantic west or south of West Greenland.

A female specimen of Lagocephalus lagocephalus (L.), 60 cm long, was collected alive on Aug. 26, 1961 on the beach at Point Verde, Placentia Bay, Newfoundland, 47°14′N, 54°01′W. This is apparently the first record of this species in the western Atlantic.

A single adult female specimen of the Northern brown shrimp, Farfantepenaeus aztecus, a species native to the western Atlantic coasts, was caught in Boka kotorska bay (southern Adriatic Sea) on 19 September 2013. This is the first record of this alien species in the Adriatic Sea.

A second species of the ctenochelid genus Ctenocheloides Anker, 2010 is described based on a single female specimen collected on a rocky reef in front of Maceió, Alagoas, northeastern Brazil. Ctenocheloides almeidai sp. nov. represents the first record of Ctenocheloides in the Atlantic Ocean. The new species differs from C. attenboroughi Anker, 2010, the type species from Madagascar, in the number of teeth in the crista dentata of the third maxilliped, the proportions and ar-mature of the major and minor chelipeds, and several other characters. The microhabitats of C. almeidai sp. nov. and C. attenboroughi are remarkably similar: both species inhabit burrows made in rock crevices cemented by compact clay-like silt, at very shallow depths (1–1.5 m). A key to the western Atlantic species of the family Ctenochelidae is provided.

Red algae are the most conspicuous component in algal drifts that periodically arrive on the coasts of the Yucatan Peninsula. Given the presence of agars and carrageenans in their cell wall and the synthesis of secondary metabolites that act as antitumors or antioxidants, most of these species are highly valued in the international market. However, in this region of Mexico they are not used but represent a problem of waste from beaches. Our aim was to determine the composition of marine red algae of economic use in the algal drifts of the Yucatan Peninsula, providing brief descriptions, photographs that facilitate their identification and possible explanations for their causes and routes of origin. 13 samplings were carried out at 14 sites, collecting fresh and complete thalli from which the species of economic importance were described. 24 species distributed in six orders and seven families were identified. The most abundant families for both the number of species and the amount of biomass were Gracilariaceae (10 species), Rhodomelaceae (6 species) and Solieriaceae (3 species). The localities with the greatest diversity and biomass were those belonging to Campeche: Sabancuy (11 species), Punta Xen (14 species), Tortuga Bay (13 species) and Playa Bonita (13 species). From the present study we contributed six new records endemic to Campeche, including the first record of the genus Codiophyllum for the Western Atlantic Ocean. Our data on diversity, biomass, periodicity and growth rates of red algal drifts allow us to suggest that the Campeche and Yucatan drifts are a sustainable source of raw material.

The Indo-Pacific portunid, Charybdis hellerii (A. Milne-Edwards, 1867), is a crab species native to the Indian and Western Pacific Oceans and has previously colonized the Eastern Mediterranean and the Western Atlantic. It is now recorded in the Eastern Atlantic, on the coast of Benin, where a thriving population has established. This invasive and widely distributed species exhibits morphological variations within and between populations, which are discussed in detail. Its current distribution is presented, and its future expansion along the West African coast and future impact on coastal ecosystems and local fisheries are the object of tentative forecasts. Illustrations of sexually mature specimens from different sizes and regions are presented, and their allometric, individual and geographical variations are discussed. A new synonymy and a new account on the taxonomy and the biology of the species are presented. Illustrations of the lectotype and the paralectotype of C. hellerii are also provided for the first time. Charybdis spinifera (Miers, 1884), C. merguiensis (De Man, 1887) and C. vannamei Ward, 1941 are here treated as subjective junior synonyms of C. hellerii. The holotype of C. spinifera and two syntypes of C. merguiensis are illustrated.

AbstractIn this study we report the first finding of the red alga Acanthosiphonia echinata in the Mediterranean Sea. Specimens were identified using the DNA barcoding method and, in particular, the plastidial rbcL and the mitochondrial COI-5P markers. This species has been considered to be restricted to the western Atlantic and was reported in blooms from North Carolina to South Carolina. In 2015 the introduction of this species in Southeast Asia (Indonesia) was reported. Probably this taxon was introduced in the Mediterranean Sea from Indonesian populations associated with seaweed farming activities or hull fouling, via the western Atlantic-Mediterranean-Indonesia ship route.

Seventeen specimens of Lepidion eques (Günther) taken by the Fisheries Research Board of Canada St. John's, Nfld., Biological Station are apparently the first records of the species from the western Atlantic west of West Greenland. Comparison with specimens from the northeast Atlantic shows some differences in averages of meristic and morphometric characters, but with overlapping ranges in these characters.Comparison of these North Atlantic L. eques with the Mediterranean Lepidion lepidion (Risso) revealed that although closely related, these species are separable on the bases of the smaller orbit diameter in relation to the head length and especially by the relatively larger postorbital length in L. lepidion. Lepidion guentheri (Giglioli) is distinctly different from these two species in some meristic and many morphometric characters. Lectotypes of L. eques and L. guentheri are designated. Various incorrect or doubtful records of Lepidion are discussed. Two giant lepidions reported recently from the northeast Atlantic as L. guentheri are tentatively assigned to Lepidion schmidti Svetovidov, a species hitherto known only from Japan.The distributions of the North Atlantic species of Lepidion are discussed and information is provided on sexual maturity.

AbstractA new species of dajid isopod in the genus Aspidophryxus G.O. Sars, 1883 is described from three females and one male found infesting the lateral carapace of Heteromysis (Olivemysis) actiniae Clarke, 1955 (Mysidae: Heteromysinae) associated with the corkscrew anemone Bartholomea annulata (Lesuer, 1817) (Anthozoa: Aiptasiidae) from the British Virgin Islands. This is the first record of the genus from the western Atlantic; three other species are known from northern European waters, the central Atlantic and Japan, all on mysid hosts. The new species is the first dajid recorded from tropical Caribbean waters. A key to species in the genus and a list of all known hosts with parasite orientation are provided.

A taxonomic reassessment of coralline algae (Corallinales, Rhodophyta) associated with reef environments in the Abrolhos Bank, northeastern Brazil, was developed based on extensive historical samples dating from 1999–2009 and a critical evaluation of type material. Our goal was to update the taxonomic status of the main nongeniculate coral reef-forming species. Our results show that four species are the main contributors to the living cover of coral reefs in the Abrolhos Bank: Lithophyllum stictaeforme, Neogoniolithon atlanticum sp. nov., Porolithon pachydermum and Spongites fructiculosus. Comparison of the type material to modern collections has shown that Lithophyllum congestum is a heterotypic synonym of L. stictaeforme. However, L. stictaeforme and P. pachydermum were the most abundant species at the studied sites, a finding consistent with other coral reefs in the region. This is the first record of S. fructiculosus in the southwestern Atlantic. This review provides the baseline data needed for the monitoring and management of the southernmost limits of coral reefs in the western Atlantic Ocean.
