The absolute changes in fat, protein, water and free and esterified cholesterol for the entire body of standard male and female sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) during the Fraser River spawning migration are discussed.The data were obtained for twelve groups of males and twelve groups of females, totalling 216 fish. The fish were caught at three locations: before entering the river, 250 miles up the river, and at one of the spawning grounds 715 miles from the first sampling station.

Absolute changes in fat, protein and water of all major internal organs and free and esterified cholesterol of the liver and gonads of standard male and female sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) during the 1957 Fraser River spawning migration to Stuart Lake are discussed. The alimentary tract is the major source of fat and protein from the internal organs and the greater part of this reserve is expended in the first 250 miles (403 km) of the river migration. The testes consumed only 0.5% of the energy expended from the body of the standard male while the ovaries consumed 8% of the energy expended from the body of the standard female.

During the first 250 miles (400 km) of spawning migration of Fraser River sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) the free histidine content of the muscle, alimentary tract, and head+skin+bones+tail decreased to a small fraction of the initial value. A further decrease occurred in the levels of this amino acid in the alimentary tract during the subsequent 415-mile (657-km) migration to the spawning grounds, no change being observed with the other tissues. Comparatively small changes in free histidine were found with heart, spleen, liver, kidney and gonads during migration.

The non-protein nitrogenous constituents of muscle of migrating sockeye salmon were investigated. These constituents were found to be the same in both male and female fish and were present in approximately the same amounts in both sexes. The histidine content of the muscle in all fish decreased to one fifth of the original value during the early stages of the migratory journey and remained at the low level thereafter. Some of the other constituents changed to a smaller extent, usually increasing in the later stages of the migration. This was especially noticeable in female fish. However, the increase in the concentration of these constituents in the muscle was due to a decrease in the amount of muscle in the fish rather than to an increase in the amounts of the compounds themselves.

Recent studies have shown that warm temperatures reduce survival of adult migrating sockeye salmon ( Oncorhynchus nerka ), but knowledge gaps exist on where high-temperature-related mortality occurs along the migration and whether females and males are differentially impacted by river temperature. In this study, we monitored 437 radio-tagged Fraser River sockeye salmon and used capture–mark–recapture modelling approaches to investigate whether river thermal conditions differentially influence (i) spatial patterns of survival along a 413-km stretch of migration and (ii) survival of the sexes. Regardless of water temperature, survival decreased in the river section containing the most hydraulically difficult passages of the migration. However, when water temperature was warm (19 °C), survival decreased even further in the final 186 km of the migration prior to reaching the spawning grounds, particularly in females. Female and male survival differed but only when they experienced warm river temperatures. Under such conditions, the overall freshwater migration survival of males was 1.6 times higher (0.79 ± 0.09 standard error, SE) than that of females (0.50 ± 0.11 SE). As maturing female sockeye salmon maintain higher levels of plasma cortisol compared with males, we suspect that females could be immuno-compromised and thus less resistant to pathogens whose rates of development are accelerated by warm temperatures.

Beginning in 1995, segments of the late-run sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) stocks from the Fraser River, British Columbia, have initiated upriver spawning migration up to 6 weeks earlier than historical records; and those fish have experienced high rates of en route mortality. We examined the correlations between physiological and energetic status prior to river entry with subsequent migratory performance of individual salmon using telemetry and noninvasive biopsies for Adams–Thompson–Shuswap (Adams) and Weaver–Harrison (W–H) stocks. Salmon that failed to reach the river were characterized by a tendency to have elevated levels of chronic and acute stress indicators. For one stock of fish (i.e., Adams) that entered the river, those that died before reaching spawning grounds were individuals with low gross somatic energy. Furthermore, females tended to have elevated plasma estradiol levels. When contrasting fish with different behaviours and fates, fish that did not hold in the estuary and subsequently died tended to have less energy than fish that held and reached spawning areas. Females from the former group also had higher 11-ketotestosterone and estradiol levels relative to those from the later group. These data suggest that differences in physiological and energetic status may be associated with high en route mortality in late-run sockeye salmon.

Concentrations of copper, zinc, and total protein were measured in the plasma of sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) during their migration to the Chilko spawning grounds, British Columbia. Concentrations of both metals and total protein declined during migration. Final values for all three parameters were 20–50% of those observed in seawater animals. Concentrations of zinc and copper were positively correlated with plasma protein concentrations. An examination of the metal:protein ratios revealed that only the zinc:protein ratios declined during migration, suggesting that zinc was being removed from the plasma independent of the proteins.

Cortisone, cortisol, and 17-hydroxyprogesterone were isolated from the plasma of prespawning Fraser River sockeye salmon. The female plasma contained double the concentration of cortisone and cortisol found in male plasma, 41 μg and 26 μg/100 ml respectively as compared with 22 μg and 11 μg/100 ml.Corticosterone is probably present at a very low concentration and neither 11-desoxycorticosterone nor aldosterone was detected in the plasma from approximately 100 fish. Cortisone, cortisol, and total 17-hydroxysteroids were quantitatively determined in plasma samples obtained from two pure races of sockeye captured at various stages of sexual maturity. The combined concentration of cortisone and cortisol which, at the mouth of the river was three times that of the normal human, increased to as high as 17 times this level following spawning. The results are discussed in relation to the death of the fish.
