Incidence of a Parasitic Ascarid, Porrocaecum decipiens, in the Common Porpoise, Phocoena phocoena, from the Lower Bay of Fundy

Examinations were made of nematodes from the stomachs of 150 common porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) collected from 1952 to 1956 from the lower Bay of Fundy, one common porpoise from St. Ann's Bay, Nova Scotia, and one white whale, (Delphinapterus leucas) from Mace's Bay, New Brunswick.One adult Porrocaecum was found. Larval Porrocaecum in numbers ranging from 1 to 21 were found in about 25% of 50 porpoise stomachs collected in 1955 and 1956. Eighty larval Porrocaecum were present in the stomach of the white whale. No trace of reproductive organs was observed in any of the larval Porrocaecum.It is concluded that the common porpoise in the lower Bay of Fundy is not an important host of adult P. decipiens.

Approximately 1000 common or harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) are taken annually, not including the by-catch in salmon driftnets. Catches of narwhal (Monodon monoceros) and beluga (white whale, Delphinapterus leucas) fluctuate in the low to middle hundreds annually. Estimates of the annual catches in the Thule district are 100 beluga and 300 narwhals. Sporadic catches of long-finned pilot whales (Globicephata melaena) seldom exceed 100 animals per annum. Catches of minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) have risen since the late 1950s, with approximately 200 or more per annum taken in West Grenland since the mid 1960s. An annotated bibliography of titles on smaller Cetacea in Greenland is given.

From a study of living materials and specimens in several regional herbaria, a list has been drawn up of all the common and several of the rarer tube-dwelling diatoms of eastern Canada. Descriptions, illustrations of living material and acid-cleaned valves, and a key to the species are provided. Most specimens were from the Atlantic Provinces and the St. Lawrence estuary, but a few were from the Northwest Territories. By far the most common species is Berkeleya rutilans. Other species occurring commonly in the Quoddy Region of the Bay of Fundy, and sporadically in space and time elsewhere, arc Navicula delognei (two forms), Nav. pseudocomoides, Nav. smithii, Haslea crucigera, and a new species, Nav.rusticensis. Navicula ramosissima and Nav. mollis in eastern Canada are usually found as scattered cohabitants in tubes of other species. Nitzschia tubicola and Nz. fontifuga also occur sporadically as cohabitants.

A 615-cm male northern bottlenose whale (Hyperoodon ampullatus) stranded in Cobequid Bay, Bay of Fundy, in early October 1969. The skull, mandible, tympano-periotics, and teeth are described and illustrated. Five growth layers in the lower teeth place the animal below a growth curve based on samples from the Labrador Sea taken in May and June. A summary of nine other North American occurrences of 12 individuals, mainly south of Sable Island, indicates a winter migration to waters offshore of Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Crustacean and rotifer plankton assemblages of 93 lakes in Labrador, 107 in Newfoundland, and 142 in New Brunswick – Nova Scotia were investigated for evidence of correlations with lake morphometric, chemical, or biological factors. Labrador assemblages were almost completely lacking in identifiable structure. Newfoundland species clustered into two groups of different body size, suggesting the influence of fish predation. Only one species in Labrador and Newfoundland was significantly correlated with a derived factor related to lake water buffering capacity. New Brunswick – Nova Scotia species clustered into two groups, one featuring significant positive and the other significant negative correlations with the buffering factor. From this we conclude that acidification is having an impact on the limnetic zooplankton of these two provinces. Multiple discriminant analysis was used to demonstrate that New Brunswick – Nova Scotia lakes differing in their buffering capacity were also distinct in zooplankton composition. Lakes with low factor scores (low pH, alkalinity, and calcium) were mainly located in the Bay of Fundy region; this area has above average fog and precipitation, and lies within the summer air flow carrying pollutants from the south.

Truth and Privilege is a comparative study that brings together legal, constitutional and social history to explore the common law's diverging paths in two kindred places committed to freedom of expression but separated by the American Revolution. Comparing Nova Scotia and Massachusetts, Lyndsay Campbell examines the development of libel law, the defences of truth and privilege, and the place of courts as fora for disputes. She contrasts courts' centrality in struggles over expression and the interpretation of individual rights in Massachusetts with concerns about defining protective boundaries for the press and individuals through institutional design in Nova Scotia. Campbell's rich analysis acts as a lens through which to understand the role of law in shaping societal change in the nineteenth century, shedding light on the essential question we still grapple with today: what should law's role be in regulating expression we perceive as harmful?

AbstractDetailed estimates of defoliation caused by spruce budworm [Choristoneura fumiferana (Clem.)] over the crown length of young balsam fir [Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.] were made throughout a spruce budworm outbreak from 1976 to 1984 in the Cape Breton Highlands, Nova Scotia. The results show no clear tendency for a particular level of the crown to be damaged more heavily than any other. Thus, there is no reason to continue the common practice of taking samples from the mid-crown level on the assumption that they represent an ‘average’ level of defoliation either for high or low populations. Sampling from the bottom of the crown should provide a more convenient and cost-effective approach for estimating defoliation.
