BIOLOGICAL AND OCEANOGRAPHIC CONDITIONS IN HUDSON BAY 9. FISHES FROM THE HUDSON BAY REGION (EXCEPT THE COREGONIDAE)

The present study is based on examination of six collections of fishes (about 4000 specimens) from the Hudson bay region made between 1919 and 1930. The material consisted of 45 different forms, belonging to 42 species, 34 genera and 17 families.No endemic species are known from this area. The following subspecies are described as new: Ammodytes dubius hudsonius, Gymnocanthus tricuspis hudsonius and Lycodes reticulatus hacheyi.Sixteen fresh-water and brackish-water forms collected in the Hudson bay area are the same as those that occur in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence regions.Twenty-eight marine species are known from the region under consideration; the majority of them (22) are truly arctic forms.Two species (Gymnocanthus galeatus and Liparis cyclostigma) previously known only from the north Pacific and Bering sea are found in Hudson bay.The most important commercial fishes are principally anadromous and rarely marine.

Anophryocephalus Baylis, 1922 is emended to include tetrabothriid cestodes with intricate scolices (paired auricular appendages and bothridial operculae), complex genital atria (muscular chamber ventral to the vagina; muscular pad adjacent to the aperture of the male canal), and atrophy of the dorsal osmoregulatory system. Anophryocephalus anophrys (type), A. skrjabini, and A. ochotensis are redescribed. Anophryocephalus nunivakensis sp.nov., from Phoca largha, has bothridial operculae with broad anterior apertures, an ovoid cirrus sac (57–95 μm in diameter), a ventrolaterally directed male canal (26–44 μm long in mature segments), and 26–56 testes. Anophryocephalus eumetopii sp.nov., from Eumetopias jubatus, has bothridial operculae with narrow, slitlike, diagonally directed apertures, a spheroidal cirrus sac (51–72 μm in diameter), a prominent genital papilla and ventrolaterally directed male canal (36–51 μm long in mature segments), and 32–66 testes. Postlarval ontogeny of the scolex among some species of Anophryocephalus appears similar to that known for Tetrabothrius spp., suggesting uniformity in morphogenesis of the holdfast among the Tetrabothriidae. Anophryocephalus spp. are typical parasites of pinnipeds in the Holarctic, and contrary to previous reports, A. skrjabini and A. ochotensis are exclusively parasites of Phoca spp. and Eumetopias jubatus, respectively, at high latitudes in the North Pacific basin and Bering Sea.

Annual concentrations of zooplankton off California varied directly, and concentrations in the western Bering Sea varied indirectly with calculated southerly components of Ekman transport in the previous year at 50°N,140°W. This point is in the area in which surface subarctic water and the deeper currents divide north and south. The underlying geostrophic flow requires approximately 1 year to reach each downstream sampling area. Summer concentrations of zooplankton at Ocean Station P, 50°N,145°W, varied with southerly and westerly components at 50°N,160°W during the previous winter. Fifty to sixty per cent of the variance of the annual concentration in zooplankton appears to be due to advection of surface water.

This study develops preliminary estimates of total whaling-induced mortality of northern right whales in the 19th century North Pacificpelagic whale fishery. Best’s (1987) study of American whaling returns resulted in estimates of the total American catch of 14,480 and15,374 northern right whales during the period 1839-1909. The present study offers adjustment factors to estimate total mortality from thesecatch data. Quantitative data from 14 pelagic expeditions for northern right whales in the North Pacific from 1838-1860 and additionalanecdotal information about struck-but-lost animals is reviewed. On 12 voyages, 327 northern right whales were struck with harpoons, butonly 133 landed. Adjusted for the subsequent recovery of struck whales, this implies a ratio of 2.43 whales struck for each whale eventuallysecured and flensed by whaleships. Data from four voyages show that of 148 northern right whales struck with harpoons, 14 sank beforethey could be processed. From a sample of five voyages, 80 northern right whales were landed and 31 carcasses sank without being secured.During the height of pelagic whaling in the North Pacific, approximately 10% of the fleet was non-American, primarily French. Adjustingrecorded catch estimates for struck-but-lost mortality and non-American whaling yields preliminary estimates of total mortality in thisfishery in the range of 26,500-37,000 animals during the period 1839-1909. In the single decade of 1840-49, between 21,000-30,000northern right whales may have been killed in the North Pacific, Sea of Okhotsk and Bering Sea, representing about 80% of the northernright whales killed in this region during the period 1839-1909.
