The ratio of RNA to DNA (RNA:DNA) in white muscle tissue of juvenile summer flounder ( Paralichthys dentatus ) and weakfish ( Cynoscion regalis ) was used as a proxy for recent growth rate in an estuarine nursery. Variability in RNA:DNA was examined relative to temporal changes in temperature and dissolved oxygen (DO). Initial laboratory experiments indicated (i) a strong positive relationship between RNA:DNA and growth rate, (ii) a rapid response of RNA:DNA to changes in feeding, and (iii) no effect of hypoxia on the relationship between RNA:DNA and growth rate (tested in weakfish only). Diel cycling DO occurred in the nursery throughout the summers of 2002 and 2003. Canonical correlation analysis of field data indicated a strong positive relationship between RNA:DNA and mean DO conditions prior to capture in both species. Correlations were weak or insignificant between stomach content mass (an index of feeding) and mean DO and between RNA:DNA and stomach content mass and DO variability. These results suggest a strong functional relationship between DO concentration and the growth rate of juvenile fishes in an estuarine nursery. Furthermore, growth rates of wild-caught fishes (estimated from RNA:DNA) appear to be more negatively impacted by diel cycling hypoxia than would be expected from published laboratory data.

The article deals with the problem of achieving sustainable development. The purpose of this study is to reveal the relationship between the components of sustainable development, taking into account the involvement of indigenous peoples in nature conservation. Climate change makes achieving sustainable development more difficult. Indigenous peoples are the first to feel the effects of climate change and play an important role in the environmental monitoring of their places of residence. The natural environment is the basis of life for indigenous peoples, and biological resources are the main source of food security. In the future, the importance of bioresources will increase, which is why economic development cannot be considered independently. It is assumed that the components of resilience are interrelated and influence each other. To identify this relationship, a model for the correlation of sustainable development components was developed. The model is based on the methods of correlation analysis and allows to determine the tightness of the relationship between economic development and its ecological footprint in the face of climate change. The correlation model was tested on the statistical materials of state reports on the environmental situation in the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug – Yugra. The approbation revealed a strong positive relationship between two components of sustainable development of the region: economy and ecology.

Based on a survey of 147 Chinese employees, we examined the relationship between perceived career plateau and turnover intention, and the moderating role of career anchor in challenge in this process. We hypothesized that perceived career plateau would be positively related to turnover intention, and that this relationship would be stronger in employees with a higher level of career anchor in challenge than in those with a lower level. The results showed that perceived career plateau had a strong positive relationship with turnover intention, especially in employees with a high level of career anchor in challenge. These findings have implications for research in career development and turnover intention, as well as in management practices.

Although past research has noted the importance of both power and gender for understanding volubility—the total amount of time spent talking—in organizations, to date, identifying the unique contributions of power and gender to volubility has been somewhat elusive. Using both naturalistic data sets and experiments, the present studies indicate that while power has a strong, positive effect on volubility for men, no such effect exists for women. Study 1 uses archival data to examine the relationship between the relative power of United States senators and their talking behavior on the Senate floor. Results indicate a strong positive relationship between power and volubility for male senators, but a non-significant relationship for female senators. Study 2 replicates this effect in an experimental setting by priming the concept of power and shows that though men primed with power talk more, women show no effect of power on volubility. Mediation analyses indicate that this difference is explained by women’s concern that being highly voluble will result in negative consequences (i.e., backlash). Study 3 shows that powerful women are in fact correct in assuming that they will incur backlash as a result of talking more than others—an effect that is observed among both male and female perceivers. Implications for the literatures on volubility, power, and previous studies of backlash are discussed.

The two basic objectives of this study are to determine whether or not Russia has stocks of social capital upon which to draw as it seeks to democratize, and to examine the nature of the relationship between social capital and democracy in Russia. I present both qualitative and quantitative evidence that social capital exists in many parts of Russia. After a quantitative analysis of social capital and democratization, which identifies a strong positive relationship, I suggest that if the center is able to sustain democracy, Russia should be able to consolidate democratic rule.

e17530 Background: The impact of baseline tumor burden (bTB) and percentage reduction in tumor burden (dTB) on patient outcome has not been systematically studied in oncology clinical trials. We assess the relationship between both bTB and dTB and objective response (OR), progression free and overall survival (PFS and OS) in bevacizumab (B) and trastuzumab (T) trials. Methods: We analyzed 3 B and 1 T Ph 3 mBC and mCRC trials of > 1800 patients total. We used correlations and Cox models for the relationships between pairs of variables and multivariate Cox models to evaluate TB and PFS as independent predictors of OS. Here, we present the minimum dTB value until progression. Results: bTB is not related to dTB, OR rate or PFS time; it is negatively related to OS. dTB shows a strong positive relationship with PFS and OS. TB and PFS are independent predictors of OS, with PFS the better predictor. Results at earlier dTB assessments and within treatment arms are similar. Conclusions: Patients with high bTB are equally likely to respond to treatment and to have prolonged PFS as those with lower bTB, but high bTB is a negative predictor for OS. In contrast, greater percentage reductions in TB are strongly associated with better PFS and OS outcomes. Tumor burden and PFS are independent predictors of OS. Owing to these relationships, assessing bTB and dTB, as well as OR, PFS and OS, may improve the interpretation of phase II data. [Table: see text] [Table: see text]

On intertidal limestone platforms off Perth and neighbouring islands, the limpet Patelloida nigrosulcata occurs only on the shells of living abalone (Haliotis roei) and other limpets (Patella laticostata). The incidence of commensalism varies among sites and between habitats within sites but is consistently high (> 80%) among dense abalone populations along the seaward margin of platforms. There is usually only 1 limpet per shell, although 2 or 3 limpets occasionally co-occur. A strong positive relationship in size (shell length) between Patelloida nigrosulcata and H. roei indicates that limpets settle on juvenile abalone and grow at a rate proportional to the growth rate of their host. A similar size relationship exists between Patelloida nigrosulcata and Patella laticostata. Patelloida nigrosulcata forages diurnally from a home scar and markedly limits the growth of erect macroalgae on the host shell. Escape from intense interspecific competition with other molluscan grazers on the platforms may have been a strong selective force in the evolution of this commensal relationship.

This study sought to investigate the relationship between job satisfaction and organizational commitment among employees of a selected tertiary educational institution at Northwest of Haiti. A questionnaire was used to collect data from 55 employees. It was found that there is a moderate level of job satisfaction and high level of continuance and normative commitment among employees. It was also found that there is a strong positive relationship between job satisfaction and affective commitment and a weak positive relationship between job satisfaction and normative commitment. It was therefore recommended that administrators should seek to find ways and means to provide extrinsic and intrinsic motivating factors in order to prevent job dissatisfaction with regrettable consequences for the institution when employees may decide to leave their organization.

This study examines the relationship between liquidity, growth and profitability of non-financial firms listed on the Bursa Malaysia. Specifically, this study examines the relationship between liquidity and growth on profitability for 50 non-financial public listed firms in Malaysia. Using panel data technique on 250 observations across a five-year period, this study shows that liquidity has a strong positive relationship with profitability in terms of return on asset of the firms. However, liquidity in terms of quick ratio has no impact on profitability. This study also shows that firm growth in terms of sales growth has a negative relationship with profitability. However, this study shows that liquidity and growth in general do not influence profitability in terms of return on equity, although the result shows that sustainable growth rate has a positive relationship on profitability. This study highlights the importance of these measures in measuring performance. The findings in this study provide guidelines to the firms on the measures that best to be used in evaluating performance so that appropriate strategies can be adopted to increase performance.
