Reduced swimming performance and increased growth in domesticated rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss

Domesticated populations of rainbow trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss ) probably have been selected for high growth rates and large body size, which may have resulted in reduced sprint swimming performance. We hypothesized that more domesticated populations of rainbow trout would have higher growth rates and larger body size, but slower swim speed, relative to semiwild populations. We tested this hypothesis by measuring body mass, body length, and sprint swim speed multiple times over 92 days in progeny from crosses between males from three clonal lines and an outbred female. We found significantly higher body masses and significantly slower swim speeds in the highly domesticated Arlee and Hot Creek progeny groups compared with the semiwild Swanson hybrid progeny group, supporting our hypothesis. Growth rates also differed significantly among groups, but at the ages measured, the Swanson hybrid progeny had an intermediate growth rate. However, given the differences in body mass, either growth rates were higher in the more domesticated progeny groups at young unmeasured ages and (or) they hatched at a significantly larger body mass than the semiwild Swanson hybrid.

Variation among individuals in specific growth rate (SGR), feeding, and two measures of swimming performance and their possible interrelationships were investigated in juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) kept in groups on either satiation or half-satiation rations. Maximum sustainable velocity (Ucrit) was measured as an index of aerobic swimming performance and stamina (fatigue time in a fixed-velocity test at 6 body lengths ·s-1) as an index of anaerobic performance. Individual performance in both of these tests was found to be significantly repeatable. Trout fed on half-satiation ration exhibited significantly lower mean values of SGR and body size and higher levels of aggression-related fin damage, but no significant differences in stamina, relative or absolute Ucrit, glycogen content, or plasma cortisol. However, in these fish, there was a significant negative relationship between SGR and relative Ucrit, a significant positive relationship between SGR and stamina, and a significant positive relationship between SGR and total daily meal. None of these relationships were seen in fish fed to satiation. Plasma cortisol and tissue glycogen stores were not related to SGR. These results indicate that under the intensified competition of restricted ration, there are trade-offs between growth, feeding, and different types of swimming performance.

Juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss, 5–13 g) were chronically exposed to sublethal Al (38 μg∙L−1) in acidified soft water (Na+ = 85, Ca2+ = 28 μEq∙L−1, pH 5.2–5.4) for 36 d. Acclimation (increased resistance to challenge with 162 μg Al∙L−1 Al at pH 5.2) occurred after 5 d and was associated with a fourfold increase in gill mucous cell density and reduction in apparent lamellar surface area; initially elevated blood–water diffusion distances returned to normal after 34 d, but the reduction in apparent surface area persisted. Chronic exposure to acid alone (pH 5.2, same water chemistry) caused no morphometric changes but resulted in persistent impairment of Ucrit (critical aerobic swimming speed) by about 10%. This was due to increased oxygen requirements at subcritical swimming speeds (loading stress) and was alleviated when trout were swum at pH 6.5 (zero Al) on day 36. In trout preexposed to sublethal Al, Ucrit was chronically impaired by approximately 16% due to loading stresses and reduction in the maximum rate of oxygen uptake, Mo2max (limiting stress); Ucrit and Mo2max remained depressed even when fish were swum at pH 6.5 (zero Al). Reduced gill area compromises the aerobic scope for activity but may be an unavoidable cost of acclimation to Al.

AbstractSomatic growth is considered to affect pace of the telomere attrition in vertebrates. As normally developed and dwarf fish differ in the body size we have decided to compare telomere length in the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) with normal growth and with growth reduced due to the dwarf condition. Examined 1-year-old fish with normal and dwarf appearance were siblings originated from androgenetic fully homozygous doubled haploid (DH) line of rainbow trout. Particular dwarf individuals had body deformities such as humpback, kyphosis, and lordosis. Somatic cells of examined rainbow trout had an average telomere length between 17 and 20 kb, comparable in females and males. Dwarf rainbow trout exhibited significantly lower body length and weight than their normally developed siblings even though no differences in the telomere length were found between these fishes. Statistical analysis did not exhibit any correlation between body size and the telomere length. Equal length of telomeres observed in the studied normal and dwarf rainbow trout suggests morphological and physiological differences in fish with different growth rates do not affect dynamics of telomeric DNA. Or any variation in the telomere length might have been levelled by telomerase that in rainbow trout is active in all tissues irrespective of the individual developmental stage.

Growth rates of finclipped rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) released into Lake Eucumbene, New South Wales, at an age of 0+ years were examined for each year between 1986 and 1988. Traps and nets yielded significant numbers of marked fish for validation of age estimation and length backcalculation from scale reading. Poor recognition of the marks by anglers was confirmed, indicating that survival of the fish was higher than was implied by angling returns. The diffuse nature of the second annulus in scales provided initial difficulty in ageing, particularly because of a similarly diffuse false check formed during the second year. Care was required in separating the annuli after asymptotic growth was reached (3 years), Growth rates in Lake Eucumbene were comparable with those found in studies in Tasmania and Victoria. Back-calculated lengths were in agreement with those from fish of known ages. The presence of finclipped fish aged 2 + and 3 + years in a spawning population confirmed that stocked fish contributed to the spawning stocks. The study reconfirms the importance of validation of ageing techniques in fisheries investigations.

The succes ofartificial reproduction in the rainbow trout(Oncorhynchus mykiss), the development of gonads and the results obtained at incubation are significantly affected by the feeding of the breeders. The use of quality sexual  products is decisive for the assurance of the production of viable larvae and further of the estimated fish production, so that in addition to the assurance of optimal environmental parameters, the proper feeding of the breeders is required. Starting from the current stage of knowledge in the field,the main objective of the working paperwas to highlight the way the differentiatedfeeding of the rainbow trout females (Oncorhynchus mykiss) influences their growth and development. The extruded peeled feed with a high protein level upon theegg weightand the gonosomatic index were followed. The extruded peeled feed with 53% protein proved to be highly effective, materialized trough high growth performances, a better conversion and the growth of gonadal  weight.
