Isolating the influence of growth rate on maturation patterns in the smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu)

In this study, we examine the divergence in growth and maturation between two populations of smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) introduced from a common source a century ago. To determine if the divergence in maturation is simply a plastic response to differences in growth rate, we use a new approach to estimate and then compare the probabilistic maturation reaction norms (PMRNs) for each population. The PMRNs for 5-year-old males are similar in the two populations, suggesting that the observed divergence in maturation is largely a plastic response to growth rate differences. For one population, we document the time course of maturation changes for the 60-year period from 1937 through 1990; while the mean length at maturation for 5-year-old males exhibits a steady downward trend (beginning at 31 cm and ending at 26 cm), their PMRNs vary over a much narrower range (25–27 cm) and do not exhibit a consistent temporal trend. These observations are consistent with the hypothesis that most of the observed change in maturation since introduction is a product of phenotypic plasticity, driven by environmentally based differences in growth rate. Our study provides an instructive example of how the PMRN approach can be used to isolate the role of growth rate variation in generating life history differences.

Abstract:Lizards of the genusAnolishave been widely studied, however, little is known about the effects of environmental seasonality, food availability and geographic isolation on body condition, growth rate and habitat use of lizards. The existence of an insular and a continental population ofAnolis nebulosus(clouded anole), separated by only 0.47 km, represents an ideal opportunity to address this topic. We compared seasonal fluctuations in food availability (arthropod density) for anoles, as well as body condition, growth rate and habitat use in the two populations. Food availability throughout the year was sampled every 2 mo by trapping arthropods at each site. Lizards were also monitored and measured every 2 mo by surveying three quadrats in each site over 2 y giving a total of 30 visits for each quadrat. Results suggested that composition and density of food supply was similar for the two populations. Nevertheless, food supply responded to seasonality of rainfall, with an increase of 1.5 times during the rainy season. Despite similarity in food availability, insular anoles had body condition that was 5–10 times better, with growth rate twice as fast, and used similar perches. The role of predation, and inter- and intraspecific competition are discussed as possible drivers.

We examine the degree and causes of divergence in growth and reproduction in two populations of smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) introduced a century ago. Despite a common source, the Provoking Lake population now has a higher population density and slower growing individuals than the Opeongo Lake population. Using this system, we test the predictions of life history theory that delayed maturation and reduced reproductive investment are expected in high density populations with slow individual growth rates. Observations on both populations run directly counter to the aforementioned expectations. Instead, Provoking males have smaller sizes and younger ages at nesting and higher gonad masses than Opeongo males; Provoking females have smaller sizes at maturity, larger egg sizes, and higher ovarian dry masses than Opeongo females. Temperature, food availability, diet ontogeny, young-of-the-year mortality, and adult mortality were examined as plausible contributors to the divergence. Results suggest that low food availability, likely caused or mediated by intraspecific competition for prey, and lack of large prey in the diet are contributing to the slow growth, increased reproductive investment, and higher mortality following reproduction in Provoking. This study provides insight into the processes that produce rapid divergence of life history in a species exhibiting parental care.

SummaryThe hypothesis that platelet ADP is responsible for collagen-induced aggregation has been re-examined. It was found that the concentration of ADP obtaining in human PRP at the onset of aggregation was not sufficient to account for that aggregation. Furthermore, the time-course of collagen-induced release in human PRP was the same as that in sheep PRP where ADP does not cause release. These findings are not consistent with claims that ADP alone perpetuates a collagen-initiated release-aggregation-release sequence. The effects of high doses of collagen, which released 4-5 μM ADP, were not inhibited by 500 pM adenosine, a concentration that greatly reduced the effect of 300 μM ADP. Collagen caused aggregation in ADP-refractory PRP and in platelet suspensions unresponsive to 1 mM ADP. Thus human platelets can aggregate in response to collagen under circumstances in which they cannot respond to ADP. Apyrase inhibited aggregation and ATP release in platelet suspensions but not in human PRP. Evidence is presented that the means currently used to examine the role of ADP in aggregation require investigation.

Abstract The spin-lattice (T1) relaxation rates of materials depend on the strength of the external magnetic field in which the relaxation occurs. This T1 dispersion has been suggested to offer a means to discriminate between healthy and cancerous tissue by performing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at low magnetic fields. In prepolarized ultra-low-field (ULF) MRI, spin precession is detected in fields of the order of 10-100 μT. To increase the signal strength, the sample is first magnetized with a relatively strong polarizing field. Typically, the polarizing field is kept constant during the polarization period. However, in ULF MRI, the polarizing-field strength can be easily varied to produce a desired time course. This paper describes how a novel variation of the polarizing-field strength and duration can optimize the contrast between two types of tissue having different T1 relaxation dispersions. In addition, NMR experiments showing that the principle works in practice are presented. The described procedure may become a key component for a promising new approach of MRI at ultra-low fields

This study investigates human enteric virus contamination of a shellfish harvesting area. Samples were analysed over a 14-month period for Small Round Structured Viruses (SRSVs) using a previously developed nested RT-PCR. A clear seasonal difference was observed with the largest numbers of positive samples obtained during the winter period (October to March). This data concurs with the known winter association of gastroenteric illness due to oyster consumption in the UK and also with the majority of the outbreaks associated with shellfish harvested from this area during the study period. RT-PCR positive amplicons were further characterised by cloning and sequencing. Sequence analysis of the positive samples identified eleven SRSV strains, of both Genogroup I and Genogroup II, occurring throughout the study period. Many shellfish samples contained a mixture of strains with a few samples containing up to three different strains with both Genogroups represented. The observed common occurrence of strain mixtures may have implications for the role of shellfish as a vector for dissemination of SRSV strains. These results show that nested RT-PCR can identify SRSV contamination in shellfish harvesting areas. Virus monitoring of shellfish harvesting areas by specialist laboratories using RT-PCR is a possible approach to combating the transmission of SRSVs by molluscan shellfish and could potentially offer significantly enhanced levels of public health protection.

Introduction: A new approach for expressing the lattice thermal conductivity of diatomic nanoscale materials is developed. Methods: The lattice thermal conductivity of two samples of GaAs nanobeam at 4-100K is calculated on the basis of monatomic dispersion relation. Phonons are scattered by nanobeam boundaries, point defects and other phonons via normal and Umklapp processes. Methods: A comparative study of the results of the present analysis and those obtained using Callaway formula is performed. We clearly demonstrate the importance of the utilised scattering mechanisms in lattice thermal conductivity by addressing the separate role of the phonon scattering relaxation rate. The formulas derived from the correction term are also presented, and their difference from Callaway model is evident. Furthermore their percentage contribution is sufficiently small to be neglected in calculating lattice thermal conductivity. Conclusion: Our model is successfully used to correlate the predicted lattice thermal conductivity with that of the experimental observation.
