Selection equilibrium for hatchery and wild spawning fitness in integrated breeding programs

Some salmon hatchery programs intentionally integrate the wild and hatchery population by taking naturally spawned fish as some fraction of the broodstock and allowing hatchery progeny to constitute some fraction of the adults spawning in the wild. This circumvents some ecological concerns about the effects of hatchery fish on the "wild" population while still reaping some of the benefits of increased potential for harvest, but it increases some genetic concerns. Here, we model phenotypic evolution in the integrated population to investigate the effects on natural spawning fitness at the joint selection and demographic equilibrium. We find a potential, but not a certainty, depending on quantitative aspects of the management interacting with biological characteristics of the stock, for substantial erosion of natural spawning fitness, compared with the original wild population, including the possibility of runaway selection driving natural spawning fitness effectively to zero. The vulnerability to such evolutionary deterioration increases with the magnitude of the contribution of hatchery breeding to the total production and increases with harvest. The response of the selection equilibrium to increasing contribution of hatchery progeny to the broodstock can exhibit a catastrophic discontinuity.

Abstract Recent empirical evidence indicates that although fitness and fitness components tend to have low heritability in natural populations, they may nonetheless have relatively large components of additive genetic variance. The molecular basis of additive genetic variation has been investigated in model organisms but never in the wild. In this article we describe an attempt to map quantitative trait loci (QTL) for birth weight (a trait positively associated with overall fitness) in an unmanipulated, wild population of red deer (Cervus elaphus). Two approaches were used: interval mapping by linear regression within half-sib families and a variance components analysis of a six-generation pedigree of >350 animals. Evidence for segregating QTL was found on three linkage groups, one of which was significant at the genome-wide suggestive linkage threshold. To our knowledge this is the first time that a QTL for any trait has been mapped in a wild mammal population. It is hoped that this study will stimulate further investigations of the genetic architecture of fitness traits in the wild.

Many species of marine organisms live in Indonesian waters have a potential for aquaculture (fishes, crustaceans, mollusc, echinoderm, and algae). They are cultured for food resources, the basis for cosmetic and natural medicine, and also as ornamental fish for marine aquarium. Seahorse (Syngnathidae: Hippocampus) is a marine fish which has high ecological and economic value. Fishing pressure of wild seahorse increased significantly when buyers offering an attractive price for the catch. High levels of fishing effort keep the wild stocks of seahorses well below the level that could be supported by natural growth and recruitment. Aquaculture for seahorses is very important to support sustainable production and to maintain the wild population in steady condition. Culture technique for seahorses has been developed in some countries, including Indonesia. However, seahorse aquaculture in Indonesia has not been achieved as expected due to the limited understanding of some biological characteristics. This manuscript deliberates some biological characteristics that useful as basic knowledge for seahorse aquaculture.

Psychology and the social sciences are undergoing a revolution: It has become increasingly clear that traditional lab-based experiments fail to capture the full range of differences in cognitive abilities and behaviours across the general population. Some progress has been made toward devising measures that can be applied at scale across individuals and populations. What has been missing is a broad battery of validated tasks that can be easily deployed, used across different age ranges and social backgrounds, and employed in practical, clinical, and research contexts. Here, we present Skill Lab, a game-based approach allowing the efficient assessment of a suite of cognitive abilities. Skill Lab has been validated outside the lab in a crowdsourced population-size sample recruited in collaboration with the Danish Broadcast Company (Danmarks Radio, DR). Our game-based measures are five times faster to complete than the equivalent traditional measures and replicate previous findings on the decline of cognitive abilities with age in a large population sample. Furthermore, by combining the game data with an in-game survey, we demonstrate that this unique dataset has implication for key questions in social science, challenging the Jack-of-all-Trades theory of entrepreneurship and provide evidence for risk preference being independent of executive functioning.

AbstractRoot-knot nematode is a very destructive pathogen, to which most peanut cultivars are highly susceptible. Strong resistance is present in the wild diploid peanut relatives. Previously, QTLs controlling nematode resistance were identified on chromosomes A02, A04 and A09 of Arachis stenosperma. Here, to study the inheritance of these resistance alleles within the genetic background of tetraploid peanut, an F2 population was developed from a cross between peanut and an induced allotetraploid that incorporated A. stenosperma, [Arachis batizocoi x A. stenosperma]4×. This population was genotyped using a SNP array and phenotyped for nematode resistance. QTL analysis allowed us to verify the major-effect QTL on chromosome A02 and a secondary QTL on A09, each contributing to a percentage reduction in nematode multiplication up to 98.2%. These were validated in selected F2:3 lines. The genome location of the large-effect QTL on A02 is rich in genes encoding TIR-NBS-LRR protein domains that are involved in plant defenses. We conclude that the strong resistance to RKN, derived from the diploid A. stenosperma, is transferrable and expressed in tetraploid peanut. Currently it is being used in breeding programs for introgressing a new source of nematode resistance and to widen the genetic basis of agronomically adapted peanut lines.

Two field trials with five strawberry cultivars planted on a woven black polyfibre ground cover sheet with or without translucent sheet plant coverage during winter and the growing season as combined treatments were started in 2004 and 2005. In total, nine different cultivars were included in the two fields. One early cv. ‘Polka’ and one late cv. ‘Korona’ acted as standard cultivars, while the other cultivars were new, named or labelled selections from Norwegian, Finnish and Swedish breeding programs. Winter survival, spring vigour, earliness, saleable and total berry yield, berry size and berry quality were registered for three years. The cultivars differed in earliness, berry size, yield (gram per plant) and total production (sum of all years). A combination of fibre sheet winter and spring coverage and more open net sheet harvest season coverage showed favourable results for overwintering, earliness and berry yield, and enhanced the ripening process in all cultivars.

Asparagus stem blight caused by Phomopsis asparagi is a major hindrance to asparagus production worldwide. Currently, fungicides are used to manage the disease in commercial production, but resistance to common fungicides has emerged in the wild population. In the present study, 132 isolates of P. asparagi collected from different provinces in China were tested for sensitivities to pyraclostrobin, tebuconazole, and fluazinam. We also determined the efficacies of six fungicides against P. asparagi. The frequency distributions of EC50 values of the isolates tested were unimodal, but the curves for pyraclostrobin and tebuconazole had long right-hand tails. The mean EC50 values for pyraclostrobin, tebuconazole, and fluazinam were 0.0426 ± 0.0029, 0.6041 ± 0.0416, and 0.0314 ± 0.0013 μg/ml, respectively. In addition, the EC50 values for pyraclostrobin were very similar with or without salicylhydroxamic acid (SHAM), 20 μg/ml, indicating that SHAM is not needed to determine the sensitivity of P. asparagi to pyraclostrobin when using the mycelial growth inhibition assay. In greenhouse assays, Merivon (42.4% fluxapyroxad plus pyraclostrobin SC), Frown-cide (500 g/liter fluazinam SC), Cabrio (250 g/liter pyraclostrobin EC), and Nativo (75% trifloxystrobin plus tebuconazole WG) showed excellent preventive efficacy against P. asparagi. And these fungicides were more effective before inoculation than when they were applied after inoculation (P < 0.05). Therefore, these fungicides should be applied prior to infection to control stem blight. In field trials, Frown-cide, Merivon, Nativo, and Cabrio also performed good control effects, ranging from 75.2 to 86.0% in 2017 and 75.4 to 87.1% in 2018. We demonstrated that Frown-cide, Merivon, Nativo, and Cabrio had considerable potential to manage asparagus stem blight. In addition, rotations of these fungicides are essential for precluding or delaying the development of resistance and for controlling the disease.

Abstract Little is known about the effects of ranched gadoids escaping into wild populations, and plans for substantial up-scaling of gadoid mariculture raise concerns about detrimental effects on local gene pools. Genetic studies from salmonid populations subjected to intentional or unintentional releases of hatchery-produced fish suggest that wild gene pools are affected by introgression, but that the genetic impact can be minor relative to expectations from the often substantial numbers of released hatchery fish. However, even if resilience to introgression is a general trend, wild population fitness is still predicted to be jeopardized by releases. In this paper, we review theoretical genetic effects of escapes of cultivated individuals and the empirical evidence for introgression effects, which are based mainly on salmonid studies. Based on knowledge of gadoid population structure and life history traits, we make predictions for effects of gadoid mariculture on wild populations and discuss approaches for monitoring and minimizing introgression effects.

AbstractTarget region amplified polymorphism (TRAP) was used to compare genetic structures among three populations of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) – one wild and two cultured populations. Seven out of 15 primer combinations produced good amplification patterns and provided 103 amplified loci from the three populations. Numbers of polymorphic loci in the wild population were higher, indicating a decrease in genetic polymorphism in the two cultured populations. Compared with the wild population, only 39.98% loci gene frequency remained unchanged in the cultured samples, showing a genetic structure change in cultured populations. The genetic distances between wild and cultured populations were 0.0421 and 0.0809. With primer combination Ga5-800-E5, we detected a region in the electrophoretic pattern in which the number of amplified loci apparently decreased in cultured populations. These results establish a good scientific basis for developing molecular markers that can help in distinguishing wild from cultured populations.

The success of expanded salmon hatchery programs will depend strongly on the degree of density-induced diminishing returns per smolt released. Several authors have addressed the question of density-dependent mortality at sea in coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch), but have come to conflicting conclusions. We believe there are compelling reasons to reinvestigate the data, and have done so for public hatchery fish, using a variety of approaches. The results provide evidence that survival of these public hatchery fish is negatively affected, directly by the number of public hatchery smolts and indirectly by the number of private hatchery smolts. These results are weak, statistically, and should be considered primarily as a caution to those who, on the basis of other published work, believe that density-dependence does not exist. The results reported here also re-emphasize the often overlooked point that inferences drawn from data are strongly biased by investigators' views of how the systems of interest work and by the statistical assumptions they make preparatory to the analysis of those data.
