Late Quaternary sea level history in the Paulatuk to Bathurst Inlet area, Northwest Territories

The Paulatuk – Bathurst Inlet region experienced rapid deglaciation in response to marine incursion across isostatically depressed terrain during high relative sea level stands. Marine limits, frequently defined by ice-contact deltas, range from 10 m asl in the west to 228 m asl in the east and were formed from approximately 12.5 to 9 ka BP, respectively. Seven relative sea level curves demonstrate that the mainland coast has shown initial rapid emergence, then progressively less emergence, and finally submergence from Paulatuk to Bernard Harbour during the late Holocene. Regions to the east (Richardson Bay to Bathurst Inlet) continue to experience emergence. Sea level curves have shown persistently higher rebound from west to east. The pattern and magnitude of observed postglacial sea level changes are in accord with theoretical predictions. In areas outside the glacial limit, as well as close to but within the glacial limit, relative sea level initially falls during the early and middle Holocene, and then begins to rise due to the migration of the forebulge in late Holocene times. Submergence becomes progressively younger from west to east. Closer to the centre of ice loading, emergence has progressed since deglaciation.

AbstractCores and exposed cliff sections in salt marshes around Ho Bugt, a tidal embayment in the northernmost part of the Danish Wadden Sea, were subjected to 14C dating and litho- and biostratigraphical analyses to reconstruct paleoenvironmental changes and to establish a late Holocene relative sea-level history. Four stages in the late Holocene development of Ho Bugt can be identified: (1) groundwater-table rise and growth of basal peat (from at least 2300 BC to AD 0); (2) salt-marsh formation (0 to AD 250); (3) a freshening phase (AD 250 to AD 1600?), culminating in the drying out of the marshes and producing a distinct black horizon followed by an aeolian phase with sand deposition; and (4) renewed salt-marsh deposition (AD 1600? to present). From 16 calibrated AMS radiocarbon ages on fossil plant fragments and 4 calibrated conventional radiocarbon ages on peat, we reconstructed a local relative sea-level history that shows a steady sea-level rise of 4 m since 4000 cal yr BP. Contrary to suggestions made in the literature, the relative sea-level record of Ho Bugt does not contain a late Holocene highstand. Relative sea-level changes at Ho Bugt are controlled by glacio-isostatic subsidence and can be duplicated by a glacial isostatic adjustment model in which no water is added to the world's oceans after ca. 5000 cal yr BP.

During the last glaciation an ice-free corridor existed between the northeast Ellesmere Island and northwest Greenland ice sheets. This corridor constituted a peripheral depression in which the marine limit marks the uppermost extent of a full glacial sea. The full glacial sea is characterized by (1) 14C dates on in situ marine shells that predate initial emergence (unloading) followed by (2) synchronous emergence from the marine limit throughout the peripheral depression. Relative sea-level curves from the full glacial sea confirm previous morphostratigraphic and glacioisostatic evidence for limited ice extent during the last glaciation. These curves also document the history of glacial unloading and the form of the relative sea-level curve that one would theoretically expect in the peripheral depression. The form of the curves presented here is unlike any other published emergence curves from arctic Canada or from Fennoscandia.The relative sea-level curves for northeast Ellesmere Island show three segments: (1) an interval of stable relative sea level (isostatic equilibrium) at the marine limit between at least 11 000 and 8000 BP; (2) an interval of slow emergence from 8000 to 6200 BP during which northeast Ellesmere Island ice slowly retreated; and (3) an interval of rapid emergence, caused by rapid glacial unloading, after 6200 BP when a prominent amelioration was in progress. These relative sea-level curves are discussed in relation to other paleoclimatic changes and the deglacial history of northwest Greenland. These curves are of regional importance in that they provide a new means of distinguishing between areas that were ice covered and ice free during the last glaciation.

Two well-developed late Pleistocene dune fields have been identified on the western and eastern side of Akrotiri promontory (Lemesos, Cyprus). The dune fields extend immediately from the low level of their source beaches onto higher ground (>48 m amsl). Geomorphic observations supported by OSL dating and sedimentological data provided evidence of the dune development and for the palaeogeographic reconstruction of the area. Relative sea level changes and wave action during the upper Pleistocene and Holocene played an important role into the development of the palaeolandscape and affected the formation of the dunes. From the collected data the development of the western dune field started at 56.2 ± 5.5 ka when the relative sea level was at approximately −60 m and contributed to the development of the western tombolo of the area whereas the eastern dune field developed in the late Holocene, after the formation of the eastern spit that resulted in the formation of the Akrotiri Salt lake.

This study presents a world review as well as new additional data in form of submerged speleothems that are used for paleo sea level reconstructions. Speleothems significantly contributed to the understanding of the global and regional sea level variations during the Middle and Late Quaternary. The studied speleothems cover the last 1.4 Myr and are focused mainly on Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 1, 2, 3, 5.1, 5.3, 5.5, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3 and 7.5. Results reveal that submerged speleothems represent extraordinary archives providing detailed information on former sea level changes. We present also new results from stalactites collected in central Mediterranean sea, at Favignana and Ustica islands (Sicily, Italy), both characterized by continental, phreatic or marine layers. The study and analysis of the latter speleothems provide results of great interest for relative sea level changes over the last 1000 years.
