New occurrences of Oldhamia and other trace fossils in the Cambrian of the Yukon and Ellesmere Island, arctic Canada

Trace fossil assemblages from green and maroon argillites at 34 localities in the British Mountains and Barn Mountains of northernmost Yukon, and 3 localities in the Grant Land Formation of northern Ellesmere Island contain abundant Planolites spp., Oldhamia curvata, Oldhamia flabellata, and Oldhamia radiata, and rare Oldhamia antiqua, Oldhamia? wattsi (n.comb.), Bergaueria hemispherica, Cochlichnus sp., Didymaulichnus? sp., Helminthoidichnites sp., Monomorphichnus sp., Protopaleodictyon sp., and Tuberculichnus? sp. Additionally, 11 new sites in the Selwyn Mountains of north-central Yukon have yielded an ichnofauna including Helminthorhaphe sp., O. curvata, O. flabellata, O. radiata, Plagiogmus? sp., Planolites spp., and unidentified small hemispherical traces. All these assemblages are interpreted as Early Cambrian to early Middle Cambrian, based on comparison with Oldhamia-bearing ichnofaunas of similar age in North America, Argentina, and western Europe, and on archaeocyathids and olenellids in overlying units.

The original description of Archaeonossa, from beds considered Early Cambrian but now dated as early Middle Cambrian, included at least two unrelated forms of trace fossils. The ichnogenus and the type ichnospecies are redefined, a lectotype is designated, and the type material is reiilustrated, along with topotype material from Yoho National Park, British Columbia. Although this trace fossil was originally attributed to movement by a gastropod, it is concluded, on the basis of restudy, that the type occurrence should not be used as evidence of activity by Gastropoda.

The Hanneh Member (Cambrian Stage 5) of the Burj Formation and the Umm Ishrin Formation of Jordan represent a transgressive-regressive succession that contains twenty-eight ichnotaxa, including vertical burrows (Arenicolitesisp.,Diplocraterionisp.,Gyrolithes polonicus,Rosseliaisp.,Skolithos linearis, escape trace fossils), horizontal simple burrows and trails (Archaeonassa fossulata,Gordia marina,Helminthoidichnites tenuis,Palaeophycus tubularis,Planolites beverleyensis,P. montanus), plug-shaped burrows (Bergaueria sucta), horizontal branched burrows (Asterosomaisp.,Phycodesisp.,Treptichnuscf.T. pedum), bilobate structures (various ichnospecies ofCruzianaandRusophycus), and trackways and scratch marks (Diplichnitesisp.,Dimorphichnuscf.D. obliquus,Monomorphichnusisp.). Eleven trace-fossil assemblages are identified. TheArenicolitesisp. andDiplocraterionisp. assemblages occur in transgressive tidal dunes and bars whereas theRosseliaisp. assemblage characterizes areas between tidal dunes. TheCruziana salomonisassemblage reflects a wide variety of environmental settings including channels within tidal-bar complexes, bottomsets of tidal dunes, and interdune areas. TheGordia marinaassemblage is present between dune patches. TheGyrolithes polonicusassemblage penetrates into firmground mudstone below the maximum flooding surface. TheBergaueria sucta,Archaeonassa fossulata,Rusophycus aegypticusandCruziana problematicaassemblages occur in different subenvironments of the progradational delta.Cruziana salomonisandRusophycus burjensis, originally considered indicative of an early Cambrian age, are actually middle Cambrian in their type locality. Occurrences ofCruziana jordanicaandRusophycus aegypticusprovide evidence that these ichnospecies are of the same age in Jordan and may co-exist in terms of stratigraphic distribution withC. salomonisandR. burjensis.

The Hanford Brook Formation, one of the classic Cambrian units of Avalonian North America, contains at least eight species of endemic trilobites, including Berabichia milleri Westrop n. sp., that are assigned to seven genera. The vertical succession of faunas is far more complex than has been recognized previously, with each member containing a lithofacies-specific assemblage. These are, in ascending order: a bradoriid-linguloid Association without trilobites in the nearshore St. Martin's Member, a Protolenus Association in dysaerobic siltstones and sandstones of the Somerset Street Member, and a Kingaspidoides-Berabichia Association in hummocky cross-stratified sandstones of the Long Island Member that overlie a parasequence boundary at Hanford Brook. Due to the breakdown of biogeographic barriers in the late Early Cambrian, two new species-based zones, the Protolenus elegans and Kingaspidoides cf. obliquoculatus zones, share trilobite genera with the Tissafinian Stage of Morocco. This generic similarity has been the basis for correlation of this upper Lower Cambrian interval on the Avalon continent with the West Gondwanan lowest Middle Cambrian. However, the clear facies control on the occurrence of genera in the Hanford Brook Formation and the presence of an abrupt faunal break and unconformity at the base of the Tissafinian in Morocco makes this correlation questionable. The Hanford Brook Formation may represent a late Early Cambrian interval unknown in Gondwana. Sequence-stratigraphic criteria even raise the possibility that the Protolenus Association is the biofacies equivalent of Callavia broeggeri Zone faunas of the Brigus Formation of Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and Massachusetts.

Ten newly recoveredDunbaritesspecimens significantly extend the known stratigraphic range ofDunbarites.These include the first documented Midcontinent Basin records of the Missourian type speciesDunbarites rectilateralis(Miller, 1930) from north-central Oklahoma. Additional species ofDunbaritesfrom south-central Oklahoma and north-central and West Texas are described asDunbarites wewokensisn. sp. andDunbarites boardmanin. sp. AlthoughDunbaritesis an extremely rare component (~0.025 percent) of Middle and Upper Pennsylvanian ammonoid assemblages, Ruzhencev and Bogoslovskaya (1971, 1978) suggested thatDunbaritesandParashumarditesRuzhencev, 1939 be used as genozone markers for the Kasimovian [Zhigulevian] Stage (Missourian in North America). As demonstrated by this report, the range ofDunbaritesis not confined to the Kasimovian, thereby precluding its use as a Kasimovian Stage indicator.

Although Middle Cambrian trilobites of the Braintree Member in eastern Massachusetts were among the first published on in North America, re-examination of this fauna has led to wholesale taxonomic and biostratigraphic re-evaluation. This low diversity fauna now includes at least seven species, with the first report of agnostoids (three poorly preserved taxa) and the ellipsocephalid Kingaspis avalonensis new species. Paradoxides (Acadoparadoxides) harlani Green emend., a senior synonym of P. (A.) haywardi Raymond, allows correlation into the lowest Middle Cambrian elsewhere in Avalon. However, all the polymeroid species are endemic, and this precludes a highly resolved correlation into other Cambrian paleocontinents. A breakdown of provincial barriers in the late Early Cambrian as western Gondwana passed from equatorial to the higher south latitudes of Avalon led to faunal exchanges between these continents. Paradoxides (Acadoparadoxides) and Kingaspis of the Braintree fauna are shared with western Gondwana, while Braintreella and “Agraulos” quadrangularis are closest to genera known from the Spanish, Moroccan, and Perunican (Bohemian) margins of Gondwana.


I wish to emphasize the im portance of trace fossil evidence in studying the terrestrialization of invertebrates. Associations of trace fossils of arthropod origin are known from the late Silurian and Devonian non-marine sediments in the Welsh Borders, Scotland (Midland Valley and Orcadian basins), Norway (Ringerike and Hornelen basins), Spitzbergen, Appalachians of North America and Antarctica (Pollard et al . 1982, figure 15; Pollard & W alker 1984, figure 3).

AbstractThe Precambrian–Cambrian boundary candidate section at Meishucun, China, has yielded trace fossils which are abundant at some horizons. The earliest occur in Unit 3 of the Zhongyicun Member approximately 8 m above the lower selected stratotype reference point for the boundary and includeArenicolitessp.,Asteriacitessp.,Neonereites biserialis, N. uniserialisandSellaulichnus meishacunensis. The next trace-fossil-bearing horizon is in Unit 6 of the Zhongyicun Member whereCochlichnussp.,Monomorphichnussp.,Neonereites biserialisandN. uniserialisoccur. Immediately above, in Unit 7, areCruzianasp.,Didymaulichnus miettensis, Monomorphichnussp. andRusophycussp. In the Badaowan Member at the top of the section there areDidymaulichnussp. andTaphrhelminthopsis circularisin Unit 9,Arenicolitessp.,Diplocraterionsp.,Gordia molassica, Skolithossp. andT. circularisin Unit 11, andGordia meandria, ?Plagiogmussp.,Skolithossp. andT. circularisin Unit 12.Comparison of this trace-fossil distribution with that in key Precambrian–Cambrian boundary sections in other countries indicates that the ranges of a few trace fossils cross the boundary (e.g.Didymaulichnus, Neonereites, Planolites) but most appear only in the Cambrian. Different ichnogenera seem to appear at various levels above the boundary.ArenicolitesandAsteriacitesare among the first, whileTaphrhelminthopsis circularisis only encountered higher in all sequences. Some have only been recorded at much higher levels and relatively close to the first appearance of trilobites (e.g.Cruziana, Diplocraterion, Rusophycus). This suggests that the first appearance of specific trace fossils or groups of trace fossils may be valuable for locating the boundary in some sections and for correlating late Precambrian and early Cambrian strata.

More than 20 trace fossil species occur in marine facies of the Cretaceous Star Point and Blackhawk formations in the Book Cliffs and Wasatch Plateau provinces of Utah. Major genera include Ancorichnus, Arenicolites, Aulichnites, Chondrites, Conichnus, Cylindrichnus, Medousichnus, Ophiomorpha, Palaeophycus, Planolites, Rosselia, Schaubcylindrichnus, Scolicia, Skolithos, Teichichnus, Teredolites, and Thalassinoides. Newly named taxa include Ancorichnus capronus, Medousichnus loculatus, and Rosselia chonoides.Most trace fossils occur in characteristic, albeit intergradational ichnofacies correlative with major lithofacies of regressive nearshore to offshore sequences. The latter include foreshore, foreshore–shoreface transition, shoreface, and offshore facies. Landward facies are typified by clean, well sorted, well stratified, sparsely burrowed sandstones. Seaward facies, except where interrupted by hummocky bedded sandstones, exhibit successively less pure, less well sorted and stratified, more intensely bioturbated, finer grained sandstones, siltstones, and mudstones.Characteristic ichnofacies and lithofacies in the Cretaceous of east-central Utah should provide potentially useful models for reconstruction of nearshore to offshore sequences elsewhere, especially in the Western Interior Region of North America.

Only four species of Tritomaria Schiffn. have been described, all found in cold to boreal regions of the northern hemisphere. Of these, only T. quinquedentata (Huds.) Buch has been known from the arctic portions of eastern Canada. The range of this species in Canada east of the 100 meridian is tabulated, and two varieties, var. turgida (Lindb.) Weim. and var. grandiretis Buch and Arnell, are described from the same area. The latter variant is here first recorded from North America: it is presumably a polyploid, possessing larger cells and more numerous oil-bodies. T. heterophylla Schuster is described from materials from northernmost Ellesmere Island. It is allied to T. scitula, from which it differs in purplish pigmentation, broader than long leaves, and spinose-dentate perichaetial bracts. The last peculiarity serves to differentiate it from all other species of the genus. A key to all of the species and varieties, all known from eastern Canada, is given.
