Foraminifera of the middle to upper Albian transition (Lower Cretaceous), northeastern British Columbia

Throughout Alberta and Saskatchewan, the upper Albian Substage lies unconformably on subjacent beds. However, on the Peace River in northeastern British Columbia, 32 km below Hudson Hope, a silty shale outcrop shows uninterrupted marine deposition across the Middle–Upper Albian substage boundary. An arenaceous foraminiferal fauna of 21 genera and 57 sub-generic taxa is illustrated from this outcrop of the Hasler Shale. The collections come from above the previously illustrated microfauna of the Stelckiceras liardense Zone and below the occurrence of Haplophragmoides gigas gigas and provide a spectrum of transitional faunules spanning the middle–upper Albian boundary. The corresponding boundary of the Ammobaculites wenonahae Subzone of the Gaudryina nanushukensis Zone with the overlying Haplophragmoides uniorbis Subzone (new) at the base of the Haplophragmoides gigas Zone is defined at 73 m above the top of the Cadotte Sandstone by the disappearance of A. wenonahae. Genera within the upper part of the A. wenonahae Subzone and the H. uniorbis Subzone include Bathysiphon, Saccammina, Pelosina, Hippocrepina, Psammosphaera, Thuramminoides, Ammodiscus, Miliammina, Psamminopelta, Reophax, Scherochorella, Haplophragmoides, Ammobaculites, Bulbophragmium, Ammobaculoides, Textulariopsis, Pseudobolivina, Trochammina, Gravellina, Eggerella, and Verneuilinoides. Two new species and two new subspecies are established, viz. Ammobaculites kokei, Trochammina bredini, Haplophragmoides gigas Cushman pregigas, and Reophax deckeri Tappan sliteri. Species originally described from the upper Albian of Wyoming, such as Haplophragmoides uniorbis Eicher, originated out of boreal stock, as they are recognized within the middle Albian upper A. wenonahae Subzone north of the Peace River Arch. On the Peace River, the passage from middle Albian to upper Albian is marked by water depth at or below wave base, but regression is reflected at the substage boundary by the sharp reduction in variety of taxa.

Stelckiceras Jeletzky, 1980 and Pseudopulchellia Imlay, 1961 emend. (J.A. Jeletzky in 1980) are illustrated from the Ammobaculites wenonahae Subzone of the Albian (Lower Cretaceous) Hasler Formation of the Fort St. John Group, on the Peace River in northeastern British Columbia. Species of Gastroplites McLearn, 1930, Pseudopulchellia Imlay, 1961, Pseudogastroplites Jeletzky, 1980, and Stotticeras Jeletzky, 1980 are illustrated from the Ammobaculites sp. and Haplophragmoides multiplum subzones of the subjacent Cadotte Member of the Boulder Creek Formation and the underlying Hulcross Formation. Two new species, Gastroplites bahani and Gastroplites jeletzkyi, are described. The presence of several Arctic exotic ammonites suggests that the middle Albian interior seaway was not entirely isolated from the Arctic basin. Numerous foraminifera are known to be common to both basins, and current inflow may have prevented endemic Gastroplites s.st. and Stelckiceras from migrating northward. Biostratigraphic conclusions by J.A. Jeletzky are supported by this study.

The discovery of the arenaceous foraminifer Haplophragmoides gigas Cushman in the Hudson Hope area of northeastern British Columbia indicates that the Early Cretaceous (Albian) Joli Fou Sea flooded around the north side of the Peace River Arch, making an embayment that penetrated as far west as the Rocky Mountain Foothills. The microfauna of 25 genera and 46 species of arenaceous foraminifers is illustrated carrying Bathysiphon spp., Hippocrepina sp., Hyperammina spp., Lituotuba? sp., Psammosphaera spp., Reophax spp., Ammodiscus spp., Glomospira sp., Miliammina spp., Psamminopelta spp., Trochamminoides sp., Haplophragmoides spp., Ammomarginulina sp., Ammobaculites spp., Haplophragmium spp., Trochammina spp., Textulariopsis sp., Pseudobolivina spp., Plectorecurvoides sp., Verneuilina sp., Gaudryina sp., Uvigerinammina sp., Gravellina sp., and Eggerella sp.The suite occurs in the lower part of the Hasler Shale of the Fort St. John Group about 10–20 m above beds carrying a microfauna of the Ammobaculites wenonahae Subzone (= Stelckiceras liardense ammonite Zone) present in the basal portion of the Hasler Shale. The Haplophragmoides gigas Zone sensu stricto is overlain by a sequence of silty beds (Viking equivalent?), which in turn is succeeded by the Miliammina manitobensis Zone microfauna. The H. gigas assemblage has both boreal and southern aspects, suggesting a mixing of the waters from north and south as the first expression of the Colorado Sea in earliest late Albian time. The assemblage is a deep neritic one and lacks any calcareous component. Diagnostic megafauna are lacking.

This paper deals with the systematics of all known Australian Mecoptera. Two new species are described: Austrobittocw anomalus (Austrobittacus is a new genus) and Harpobittacus phaeoscius; and three new subspecies: Harpobittacus australis rubripes, H. tillyardi albatus, and H. t. rubricatus.

Two new species of deep-sea stalked crinoids belonging to the family Hyocrinidae were collected in the northeastern Pacific. The descriptions contain detailed information on character variations and ontogeny. The five specimens of Gephyrocrinus messingi n. sp. lived at depths ranging from 1,777 m to 2,110 m off British Columbia and California. This new species is the first record of the genus Gephyrocrinus in the Pacific Ocean, which was previously known from only a single species, G. grimaldii, from the northeastern Atlantic at the same depth range. The two species illustrate opposing phenotypes within the same genus. Fifty-eight specimens of the second new species, Ptilocrinus clarki n. sp., were dredged off British Columbia close to the type-locality of P. pinnatus, the type species of the genus Ptilocrinus, but at shallower depths ranging from 1,178 to 1,986 m. This exceptional collection provides significant data on intraspecific variation in the main morphological characters, especially arm pattern. The ontogeny of stalk articulations and the main traits of adoral plate differentiation are described in detail. A complementary investigation on P. pinnatus was conducted using specimens collected by the “Albatross” expedition at a depth of 2,906 m. Despite similarities in external morphology, tegmen and cover plates, the two ptilocrinid species display significant differences in pinnule architecture, aboral cup and stalk articulations. From comparison with Gephyrocrinus messingi n. sp. and Ptilocrinus clarki n. sp., G. grimaldii and P. pinnatus are interpreted as the result of heterochronic development by paedomorphy after ecological or geographic isolation. Pinnule architecture in the two new species suggests first steps in an evolutionary trend toward a rigid box which protects gonad inflation in the proximal part of the pinnule. These new data on Ptilocrinus and Gephyrocrinus create problems in the current taxonomy of the family Hyocrinidae. The main derived characters, especially in pinnule and arm pattern, are used to propose new hypotheses for hyocrinid phylogeny.

Two new species with a new subspecies of the genus Laoechinophorus Gouverneur, 2016 are described: L. thailandicus thailandicus ssp. nov. and L. thailandicus tsuyukii ssp. nov. from Thailand, and L. yunnanus sp. nov. from China. A description of male genitalia of the type species, L. unifasciatus Gouverneur, 2016, from Laos, and a key to the species of the genus are provided.

Twenty-two species of Early Permian colonial rugose corals belonging to 12 genera from 10 locations in the Stikine River area in northwestern British Columbia, Canada, are described. These include three new species ofFomichevella(F. magna, F. southeri, F. bamberi); two species ofHeintzella; five species ofHeritschioides, of which three are new (H. bagleyae, H. garvinae, H. hoganae); two new species ofParaheritschioides(P. jennyi, P. wickenae); one new species questionably assigned toKleopatrina(K.?stikinensis); two new species ofPetalaxis(P. guaspariniae, P. neriae); and two new species ofLytvophyllum(L.?mongeri, L. wersoni). In addition, five new species assigned to five new genera are here namedEastonastraea complexa, Fedorowskiella simplex, Pararachnastraea lewisi, Stikineastraea thomasi, andWilsonastraea rigbyi.These corals occur in rocks forming part of the Stikine terrane, the largest tectonostratigraphic unit in western Canada. This coral fauna shows a very close affinity with that of the Lower Permian McCloud Limestone of the eastern Klamath Mountains of northern California, and there is some similarity to the Coyote Butte fauna of central Oregon. Several species compare most closely with species from Spitsbergen, but there are few similarities with any cratonal North American faunas and none with Tethyan faunas.

AbstractA well-preserved fauna of largely articulated trilobites is described from three new localities close to one another in the Bull River Valley, southeastern British Columbia. All the trilobites from these localities are from the lower or middle part of the Wujiajiania lyndasmithae Subzone of the Elvinia Zone, lower Jiangshanian, in the McKay Group. Two new species are proposed with types from these localities: Aciculolenus askewi and Cliffia nicoleae. The trilobite (and agnostid) fauna from these localities includes at least 20 species: Aciculolenus askewi n. sp., Agnostotes orientalis (Kobayashi, 1935), Cernuolimbus ludvigseni Chatterton and Gibb, 2016, Cliffia nicoleae n. sp., Elvinia roemeri (Shumard, 1861), Grandagnostus? species 1 of Chatterton and Gibb, 2016, Eugonocare? phillipi Chatterton and Gibb, 2016, Eugonocare? sp. A, Housia vacuna (Walcott, 1912), Irvingella convexa (Kobayashi, 1935), Irvingella flohri Resser, 1942, Irvingella species B Chatterton and Gibb, 2016, Olenaspella chrisnewi Chatterton and Gibb, 2016, Proceratopyge canadensis (Chatterton and Ludvigsen, 1998), Proceratopyge rectispinata (Troedsson, 1937), Pseudagnostus cf. P. josepha (Hall, 1863), Pseudagnostus securiger (Lake, 1906), Pseudeugonocare bispinatum (Kobayashi, 1962), Pterocephalia sp., and Wujiajiania lyndasmithae Chatterton and Gibb, 2016. Pseudagnostus securiger, a widespread early Jiangshanian species, has not been previously recorded from southeastern British Columbia. Non-trilobite fossils collected from these localities include brachiopods, rare trace fossils, a complete silica sponge (Hyalospongea), and a dendroid graptolite. The faunas from these localities are more diverse and better preserved than those from other previously documented localities of the same age in the region.Additional specimens of a rare species, found by amateur collectors in previously documented localities of slightly younger age (upper part of Wujiajiania lyndasmithae Subzone) in the same region, are documented. Two new species similar to Cyana dohertyi (Elwes, 1890), C. lada Volynkin, Černý & Saldaitis, sp. nov. (Vietnam and China) and C. titovi Volynkin, Černý & Ivanova, sp. nov. (Vietnam) are described. A new subspecies C. dohertyi mertsana Volynkin & Černý, ssp. nov. is described from North Thailand and North Vietnam. Adults, male and female genitalia of the new and related species are illustrated.
