Upper Silurian trilete spores and other microfossils from the Read Bay Formation, Cornwallis Island, Canadian Arctic

A diverse palynomorph assemblage of trilete spores, tetrads, acritarchs, chitinozoans, scolecodonts, and fragments of arthropods, ?hydrozoans, ?graptolites, and possibly nematophytalean and vascular plants occurs 20 m above the base of member B of the Read Bay Formation at the type section on eastern Cornwallis Island, District of Franklin. This assemblage, here described briefly, is late Ludlow according to faunas above and below. The palynomorphs, other fossils, and stratigraphic framework indicate that the shales of member B were deposited in a sheltered near-shore marine environment. One new species of trilete spores, Retusotriletes chartulatus McGregor, is erected.

Heliolitine corals occur in Upper Silurian strata of the topmost Douro, lower Barlow Inlet, and lower Somerset Island formations in the Boothia Uplift region. The fauna includesHeliolites(nine species),Propora(two species), the stelliporellid generaPodollites(three species) andStelliporella(one species), and the plasmoporidSquameolites(one species). Species present but not previously reported from the region includeHeliolites arcuatusBondarenko,Heliolites uksunayensisMironova,Stelliporella ilensisBondarenko,Podollites assitusnew species,Podollites parryinew species,Podollites plectilisnew species,Propora tubulata(Lonsdale) and an unidentified species ofPropora.All species occur in reef and reef-associated facies of open carbonate shelf and ramp settings. In restricted nonreefal carbonate shelf settings, diversity attenuates to a minimum, exemplified by numerically abundant monospecific assemblages ofHeliolites uksunayensis.Six of the 16 morphotaxonomic units recognized compare with species reported previously in Silurian faunas of Kazakhstan and Mongolia. Combinations of characters in the species attributed toPodollitessupport revision of the genus, possibly to includeDerivatolitesandTarbagatailites, in a group morphologically intermediate betweenStelliporellaandHeliolites.

Species of Atrypoidea have the potential of being biostratigraphically useful for the Upper Silurian strata of Arctic Canada. Critical to any biostratigraphic scheme is the relationship between A. phoca (Salter, 1852) and A. scheii (Holtedahl, 1914) since there is disagreement as to whether these species are synonymous, or distinct and stratigraphically separate species. Detailed morphological analysis of topotype A. scheii from Goose Fiord, Ellesmere Island shows that it falls within the range of morphological variation displayed by topotype A. phoca from Cape Riley, Devon Island. Consequently, A. scheii is maintained as a synonym of A. phoca.Other new species that may prove to be biostratigraphically useful include Atrypoidea gigantus n.sp. from an unnamed formation at Goose Fiord and A. netserki n.sp. from member C of the Read Bay Formation on Beechey Island. Atrypoidea gigantus, the largest species of Atrypoidea so far reported from Arctic Canada, is closely related to Atrypoidea foxi (Jones, 1974). Atrypoidea netserki is morphologically closest to A. phoca.Although the Atrypoidea sequences in the Ludlovian and Pridolian strata of Arctic Canada are now better known it is still difficult to delineate exact evolutionary trends, possibly because the various species have a facies- as well as a time-controlled distribution.

Twenty-two specimens of Thuliocyclus prominens, a new palaeocyclid rugose coral genus and species, on a loose slab presumably from the lower Pridolian Barlow Inlet Formation at Cape Rescue on Cornwallis Island, Northwest Territories, Canada, provide a good growth series from neanic to ephebic stages. The new genus shares morphological characteristics with both typical Silurian Palaeocyclidae and more advanced Devonian Hadrophyllidae.

This paper is concerned with the Diplodiniinae of 14 reindeer from the Canadian Arctic. One new species, Polyplastron arcticum n.sp., is described, and eight other species of Diplodiniinae redescribed. A key to the species of Diplodiniinae of reindeer has been compiled.

This is a taxonomic study of Cintractia spp. on nearly one hundred host species, mainly in Canada, northern United States, and southern Alaska. Coverage is very incomplete for northern Alaska, Greenland, and parts of the Canadian arctic archipelago. Eighteen species and varieties are recognized including one new species, Cint. atratae, and four new varieties, Cint. carpophila vars. kenaica and verrucosa and Cint. caricis vars. intermedia and acutarum. Two recombinations are made. The biology and phylogeny of the group are also discussed.

Microvertebrate assemblages from four Upper Silurian (?Ludlow-Pridoli) localities on Cornwallis Island, Arctic Canada, comprise mainly scales, plus dentition cones and jaw fragments from ischnacanthid acanthodians, with rare scales assigned to heterostracan Lepidaspis? sp., ?chondrichthyan Arauzia? sp., and Placodermi? gen. et sp. indet. Most of the scales in sample C-11460 are assigned to the poracanthodid acanthodian Poracanthodes canadensis sp.nov., which shows closest affinity to Poracanthodes punctatus Brotzen variants from the Baltic Pridoli. The flank scales of the new species resemble those of P. punctatus s.s. (Silurian variant; the zone fossil for the late Pridoli in the Standard Silurian microvertebrate scheme), with their superposed crown growth zones, rows of small pores aligned with the underlying zones, number of radial canals, and "arcade" canals connecting these radial canals. They differ in having numerous anterior crown riblets, "zig-zag" rather than straight crown pore rows, and V-shaped arcade canals.

As a result of study of 18 samples, collected in Lake Teletskoye and inflowing rivers in 1992–1995, 34 diatom species of the genus Navicula Bory were found. Among them 21 taxa are new for the studied region, 7 species (Navicula arkona, N. hangaica, N. cf. pseudoreinhardtii, N. ricardae, N. scaniae, N. schweigeri, N. suecicarum) are recorded for the first time in Russia. One new species (N. pseudoharmoniae sp. nov.) is described. It is compared with N. harmoniae and N. digitoconvergens.

A new species list of plants and lichens of Russia and neighboring countries has been developed for Turboveg for Windows, the program, intended for storage and management of phytosociological data (relevés), is widely used all around the world (Hennekens, Schaminée, 2001; Hennekens, 2015). The species list is built upon the database of the Russian website Plantarium (Plantarium…: [site]), which contains a species atlas and illustrated an online Handbook of plants and lichens. The nomenclature used on Plantarium was originally based on the following issues: vascular plants — S. K. Cherepanov (1995) with additions; mosses — «Flora of mosses of Russia» (Proect...: [site]); liverworts and hornworts — A. D. Potemkin and E. V. Sofronova (2009); lichens — «Spisok…» G. P. Urbanavichyus ed. (2010); other sources (Plantarium...: [site]). The new species list, currently the most comprehensive in Turboveg format for Russia, has 89 501 entries, including 4627 genus taxa compare to the old one with 32 020 entries (taxa) and only 253 synonyms. There are 84 805 species and subspecies taxa in the list, 37 760 (44.7 %) of which are accepted, while the others are synonyms. Their distribution by groups of organisms and divisions are shown in Table. A large number of synonyms in the new list and its adaptation to work with the Russian literature will greatly facilitate the entry of old relevé data. The ways of making new list, its structure as well as the possibilities of checking taxonomic lists on Internet resources are considered.
