Observations of geomagnetic and telluric field variations have been made at four stations near La Malbaie, Quebec, in a seismically active region northeast of Quebec City. The data were analysed by transfer function and impedance tensor methods to study the nature of geomagnetic induction in the region and its structural implications. Transfer functions and telluric fields were influenced by several factors including the nearby St. Lawrence River, lateral variations in conductivity caused by geological complexities, and conduction of electric currents probably originating through induction in the ocean.It is demonstrated that it is possible to distinguish between induction by the vertical geomagnetic field and induction by the horizontal components. Anomalous vertical fields caused by vertical field induction are observed in the area and the electric currents associated with them have a flow pattern which is similar to that of currents induced by the horizontal field. Further, the Z-induced currents changed impedance tensor elements by as much as 20% though the effect was usually smaller than this. Nonetheless, the magnetotelluric data confirmed the presence of a conductivity anomaly in the Laurentides Park region of Quebec.

Quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) methods partition the system into active and environmental regions and treat them with different levels of theory, achieving accuracy and efficiency at the same time. Adaptive-partitioning (AP) QM/MM methods allow on-the-fly changes to the QM/MM partitioning of the system. Many of the available energy-based AP-QM/MM methods partition the system according to distances to pre-chosen centers of active regions. For such AP-QM/MM methods, I develop an adaptive-center (AC) method that allows on-the-fly determination of the centers of active regions according to general geometrical or potential-related criteria, extending the range of application of energy-based AP-QM/MM methods to systems where active regions may occur or vanish during the simulation.

Three colored surface water nanofiltration pilot-scale projects were conducted in the province of Quebec (eastern Canada), between November 2000 and March 2002, by the company H2O Innovation (2000) inc., for the municipalities of Lac Bouchette, Latulipe-et-Gaboury and Charlesbourg (now part of Quebec City). Results indicated that nanofiltration permeate quality has an advance on present drinking water regulation standard in Quebec, but important membrane fouling occurred. Fouling can be controlled by pretreatment and optimization of the operating conditions.
