Observations on the effects of frost on beach sediments at Rimouski, lower St. Lawrence Estuary, Québec

Freezing of beach sediment during exposure to cold air and subsequent thawing upon immersion have been analyzed in a strong tidal environment, near Rimouski in the St. Lawrence Estuary (Québec). Temperature data, recorded at different depths in the sediment over a 25-h period above the high water mark and following a sudden drop of air temperature to −6 °C, indicate that temperatures in the top 15 cm of the beach dropped below the freezing point of seawater (<−1.36 °C). At the mid-tide level station, which was alternately exposed to air and immersed, freezing temperatures were observed to a depth of approximately 5 cm. Observations show that the surface sediment became ice-cemented to a corresponding depth. Temperature changes on exposure to air and immersion were rapid in the surface sandy layer (about 5 cm) and slower in the underlying coarser sediment. Temperature changes were barely perceptible at low tide level and no ice-cemented sediment was observed. Observations on the frozen beach showed that waves undermined the ice-cemented surface sediment and eventually eroded away this frozen layer of beach material.

Data available on water levels in the St. Lawrence Estuary were used to evaluate the relative variation of mean water levels in this area. Only measurements taken at Pointe-au-Père could be used to evaluate this parameter with the required precision; a relative stability of water levels (−0.3 ± 0.5 mm/year) was observed. Upstream stations, especially the ones in the estuary, are highly influenced by the freshwater input of the St. Lawrence River. The high discharge of the river has been identified as the main cause of high water levels observed between 1970 and 1988 and, consequently, of bank erosion at the limit of the St. Lawrence estuary. The depleted population of belugas (Delphinapterus leucas) inhabiting the St Lawrence estuary, Canada, was monitored by periodic photographic aerial surveys. In order to correct counts made on aerial survey film and to obtain an estimate of the true size of the population, the diving behaviour and the visibility from the air of these animals was studied. A Secchi-disk turbidity survey in the belugas’ summer range showed that water clarity varied between 1.5 m and 11.6 m. By studying aerial photographs of sheet-plastic models of belugas that had been sunk to different depths below the surface, we found that models of white adults could be seen down to about the same depth as a Secchi disk, but no deeper. Smaller models of dark-grey juveniles could only be seen down to about 50% of Secchi-disk depth. By observing groups of belugas from a hovering helicopter and recording their disappearances and re-appearances, it was found that they were visible for 44.3% of the time, and that an appropriate correction for single photographs would be to multiply the photographic count by about 222% (SE 20%). For surveys in which there was overlap between adjacent frames, the estimated correction would be 209% (SE 16%). This correction factor was slightly conservative and gave an estimate of the true size of the population, based on a single survey, of 1,202 belugas (SE 189) in 1997. An estimate for 1997 based on smoothing 5 surveys 1988–1997 was 1,238 (SE 119).

Respiration rate experiments at different temperatures were conducted on three species of euphausiids, Meganyctiphanes norvegica, Thysanöessa raschii, and T. inermis, found in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The slopes of the respiration regression lines at different temperatures for the same species were not significantly different. Thysanöessa inermis acclimated to temperature changes with the result that its respiration rates remained relatively stable over most of the temperatures tested.Feeding rates were measured for M. norvegica and T. inermis at different temperatures using Artemia nauplii as food. The number of calories ingested, expressed as a percentage of the total body calories of the euphausiid, decreased with body size and water temperature. Thysanöessa inermis ingested fewer calories than M. norvegica in relation to total body calories at all temperatures. Both species showed a linear relationship between molting frequency and water temperature, T. inermis having a shorter intermolt period than M. norvegica.Results were used to estimate the energy consumption of the natural populations of euphausiids in the upper part of the Gulf of St. Lawrence estuary.

The meiofauna of the St Lawrence estuary was investigated in the intertidal zone of the Parc du Bic (Quebec, Canada). Five nematode assemblages were distinguished by a cluster analysis: A1 and A2 (upper-tide level); A3 (mid-tide level); A4 and A5 (low-tide level). Discriminant function analysis showed that exposure time during low tide was the most important environmental factor in determining differences between assemblages. Chlorophyll-a, phaeopigments, sediment water content, and per cent of silt followed in the same order. Nematode densities (400–1500 ind 10 cm−2) were found to be lower than those generally reported for other estuarine intertidal zones of the eastern Atlantic coast. Mean nematode biomass in the five assemblages ranged between 96±14 and 248±86 μg Corg 10 cm−2. Deposit feeders were generally the dominant nematode feeding group in terms of abundance and biomass. Correlation of epigrowth-feeders with chlorophyll-a and phaeopigments, respectively, suggested that in the upper-tide level, old or partially degraded phytodetritus contribute more to the diet of this nematode feeding group; and in the low-tide level epigrowth-feeders may rely more on ‘fresher’ phytodetritus.

Abstract. The distribution of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and carbon (DOC) in sediment porewaters was determined at nine locations along the St. Lawrence estuary and in the gulf of St. Lawrence. In a previous manuscript (Alkhatib et al., 2012a), we have shown that this study area is characterized by gradients in the sedimentary particulate organic matter (POM) reactivity, bottom water oxygen concentrations, and benthic respiration rates. Based on the porewater profiles, we estimated the benthic diffusive fluxes of DON and DOC in the same area. Our results show that DON fluxed out of the sediments at significant rates (110 to 430 μmol m−2 d−1). DON fluxes were positively correlated with sedimentary POM reactivity and varied inversely with sediment oxygen exposure time (OET), suggesting direct links between POM quality, aerobic remineralization and the release of DON to the water column. DON fluxes were on the order of 30 to 64% of the total benthic inorganic fixed N loss due to denitrification, and often exceeded the diffusive nitrate fluxes into the sediments. Hence they represented a large fraction of the total benthic N exchange, a result that is particularly important in light of the fact that DON fluxes are usually not accounted for in estuarine and coastal zone nutrient budgets. In contrast to DON, DOC fluxes out of the sediments did not show any significant spatial variation along the Laurentian Channel (LC) between the estuary and the gulf (2100 ± 100 μmol m−2 d−1). The molar C / N ratio of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in porewater and the overlying bottom water varied significantly along the transect, with lowest C / N in the lower estuary (5–6) and highest C / N (> 10) in the gulf. Large differences between the C / N ratios of porewater DOM and POM are mainly attributed to a combination of selective POM hydrolysis and elemental fractionation during subsequent DOM mineralization, but selective adsorption of DOM to mineral phases could not be excluded as a potential C / N fractionating process. The extent of this C- versus N- element partitioning seems to be linked to POM reactivity and redox conditions in the sediment porewaters. Our results thus highlight the variable effects selective organic matter (OM) preservation can have on bulk sedimentary C / N ratios, decoupling the primary source C / N signatures from those in sedimentary paleoenvironmental archives. Our study further underscores that the role of estuarine sediments as efficient sinks of bioavailable nitrogen is strongly influenced by the release of DON during early diagenetic reactions, and that DON fluxes from continental margin sediments represent an important internal source of N to the ocean.

From a study of living materials and specimens in several regional herbaria, a list has been drawn up of all the common and several of the rarer tube-dwelling diatoms of eastern Canada. Descriptions, illustrations of living material and acid-cleaned valves, and a key to the species are provided. Most specimens were from the Atlantic Provinces and the St. Lawrence estuary, but a few were from the Northwest Territories. By far the most common species is Berkeleya rutilans. Other species occurring commonly in the Quoddy Region of the Bay of Fundy, and sporadically in space and time elsewhere, arc Navicula delognei (two forms), Nav. pseudocomoides, Nav. smithii, Haslea crucigera, and a new species, Nav.rusticensis. Navicula ramosissima and Nav. mollis in eastern Canada are usually found as scattered cohabitants in tubes of other species. Nitzschia tubicola and Nz. fontifuga also occur sporadically as cohabitants.

As an essential step in modeling the influence of circulation on the population dynamics of marine planktonic copepods, we define a simple formulation of swimming behavior that can be used in both Eulerian and Lagrangian models. This formulation forces aggregation of the population toward a preferential depth and can be stage specific and time varying, thus allowing description of either diurnal or seasonal vertical migration. We use the formulation to examine the interaction between the circulation and vertical distribution in controlling horizontal distribution of the common planktonic copepod Calanus finmarchicus in the Lower St. Lawrence Estuary, Canada. We first introduce diel migration into a simple one-dimensional model and then into a model of residual two-dimensional circulation patterns representative of conditions encountered in the Lower St. Lawrence Estuary. Results from the latter indicate that interactions between circulation and stage-specific swimming behaviors are the main mechanisms for aggregation of planktonic crustaceans at the head of the Laurentian Channel and highlight the implications of flushing of the surface-dwelling young stages for the population dynamics of C. finmarchicus in the Lower St. Lawrence Estuary.
