Pre-Katangan geochronology of Zambia and adjacent parts of Central Africa

The significance of new age determinations on pre-Katangan (Late Precambrian) rocks and minerals from Zambia and adjacent parts of Tanzania and Rhodesia is discussed. In northwestern Rhodesia, the Lomagundi-Piriwiri sediments were deposited between 2500 and 2000 m.y. ago and were folded along meridional trends at circa 1940 m.y. A later episode of folding and metamorphism along similar trends occurred about 1700 m.y. ago, but only affected the western part of the sedimentary sequence (the Piriwiri Series). This latter date is comparable to that which appears to characterize the Tumbide trend, a N- to NE-trending fold system, in Zambia.In Zambia the Tumbide trend is the oldest tectonic episode preserved in the basement and is found only in isolated blocks and cores into which later tectonisms have not penetrated. The dominant pre-Katangan tectonism is represented by the NE to ENE Irumide trend. Such tectonic trends are particularly well developed in the Irumide Orogenic Belt of northern Zambia and adjacent Tanzania. Age determinations set a younger limit of circa 900 m.y. to this trend and the existence of an Irumide Cycle between about 1600 and 900 m.y. is suggested. The possibility that the relatively unmetamorphosed sediments of the Upper Plateau Series and Abercorn Sandstones at the southern end of Lake Tanganyika, the Mafingi Series of northern Malawi, and the Konse Series of Tanzania, represent near-contemporaneous platform deposition associated with the Irumide belt is considered.From this and other recent studies the distribution of orogenic belts in central and eastern Africa can be revised and a number of features of their pattern and inter-relationships noted.

The lions of North Africa were unique in ecological terms as well as from a human cultural perspective and were the definitive lions of Roman and Medieval Europe. Labelled “Barbary” lions, they were once numerous in North Africa but were exterminated by the mid-20th century. Despite subsequent degeneration of the Atlas Mountain ecosystem through human pressures, the feasibility of lion reintroduction has been debated since the 1970s. Research on the long-established captive lion collection traditionally kept by the sultans and kings of Morocco has enabled selective breeding coordinated across Moroccan and European zoos involving a significant number of animals. Molecular genetic research has recently provided insights into lion phylogeny which, despite previous suggestions that all lions share recent common ancestry, now indicates clear distinctions between lions in North, West, and Central Africa, the Middle East, and India versus those in Southern and Eastern Africa. A review of the evolutionary relevance of North African lions highlights the important challenges and opportunities in understanding relationships between Moroccan lions, extinct North African lions, and extant lion populations in India and West and Central Africa and the potential role for lions in ecosystem recovery in those regions.

Sudan is situated in north-eastern Africa bordered by the Red Sea, Egypt, Libya, Chad, Central Africa Republic, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Eritrea. It has an area of 1,886 million square kilometres (km) and an estimated 2019 population of 42.81 million. South Sudan gained independence from Sudan on 9 July 2011, and as such the provisions only relate to Sudan (North), which is now formally known as the Republic of Sudan. The capital of Sudan is Khartoum. The working week in Sudan is from Saturday to Wednesday with business hours beginning at 0800 and ending at 1630, Thursday’s hours are from 0800 to 1300, whilst Friday is day off. The currency in Sudan is the Sudanese pound (SDG/Ls).

It is 619,745 square kilometres (km) and has a population of 12.58 million. South Sudan gained independence from Sudan on 9 July 2011, making it the most recently recognized independent country. South Sudan, which is officially known as the Republic of South Sudan, comprises the three former southern provinces of Bahr el Ghazal, Equatoria, and Upper Nile in their boundaries as they stood on 1 January 1956 and the Abyei Area, as defined by the Abyei Arbitration Tribunal Award of July 2009. The capital of South Sudan is Juba.

The Early Cretaceous (135–130 Ma) continental rupture of Western Gondwana to form the South American and African plates closely paralleled the elongate trends of Precambrian and Paleozoic orogenic belts. These orogenic belts were produced as a result of the Neoproterozoic convergent and strike-slip assembly of Gondwana that redeformed during later, Paleozoic orogenic events. Continued continental rifting led to the formation of conjugate, South Atlantic volcanic passive margins whose widths vary from 55 to 180 km. Along-strike variations in crustal stretching, as measured from deep-penetration seismic reflection profiles, correlate with parallel and oblique orientations of rifts relative to the trend of the orogenic, basement fabric. Where orogenic fabric trends parallel to the north–south South Atlantic rift direction such as in the Dom Feliciano orogenic belt of Uruguay and Brazil and the Kaoko Uruguay/Brazil and Kaoko orogenic belt of Namibia, we observe narrow (55–90 km) rift zones with modest continental beta factors of 2.5–3.5 because smaller amounts of rifting were needed to stretch the weaker and parallel, orogenic, basement fabric. Where the basement fabric trends near-orthogonally to the north–south South Atlantic rift direction such as in the Salado suture of Southern Uruguay and the Damara Belt of Namibia, we observe wider (185–220 km) rift zones with higher beta factors of 4.3–5 because greater amounts of stretching were needed to rupture the orthogonal, orogenic, basement fabric. The rift-oblique Gariep Belt intersects the South Atlantic continental rupture at an intermediate angle (30°) and exhibits a predicted intermediate beta factor of 4.0. A compilation of published beta factors from 36 other rifted margins worldwide supports the same basement-trend-degree of stretching relationship that we have developed — with rift-parallel margins having lower beta factors in a range of 1.3–3.5 and rift-orthogonal or oblique margins having higher beta factors in a range of 4–8.
