Predators are the most important natural enemies of the European red mite. Notes are given on the life history and habits of the following predaceous enemies of this mite, Seiulus pomi Parrott; Diaphnidia pellucida Uhl.; Diaphnidia capitata Van D.; Hyaliodes vitripennis Say; Stethorus punctum Leconte; Plagiognathus obscurus Uhl.; Camptobrochis nebulosus Uhl.; Anystis agilis Banks; Campylomma verbasci Mey., and an unidentified species of Syrphidae.

Terminology, food plants, dispersion and economic importance of the European red mite, Paratetranychus pilosus C. & F., which affects deciduous fruit trees in America, are discussed. The mite, first observed in Nova Scotia in 1913, became of economic importance in 1925. The life history, obtained from an insectary and field study extending over a period of three years from 1930 to 1932, is recorded in detail. There are two complete generations and three partial generations in Nova Scotia. Fluctuations in temperature markedly affect mite development. Natural control of the winter eggs is important.

Among the important predators of the European red mite, Metatetranychus ulmi (Koch), in Nova Scotia is a group of predacious mites belonging to the subfamily Phytoseiinae. There is little information in the literature on the biology of the species in this subfamily. Smith and Summers (1949) reported on the bionomics of “Hypoaspis” macropilis (Banks), and Herbert (1952) and Ballard (1953) on the life-history of Typhlodromus fallacis (Garm.).

The life history of Phaeosaccion collinsii Farlow, a species which is known from a single locality in Nova Scotia, has been completed in culture. There was no indication of a sexual phase and zoospores gave rise directly to the tubular thallus. Completion of the life history occurred at 5 °C only. At higher temperatures spores failed to germinate, or growth and differentiation were suppressed. Light intensities exceeding 100 ft-c inhibited spore germination, although growth and differentiation were not similarly affected. In nature mature plants occur sublittorally, and are present only in spring when the water temperature is around 5 °C. Zoospore flagellation is of the typical heterokont type with the flimmer bearing bilateral hairs. On this basis P. collinsii can be placed either in the Chrysophyceae or Phaeophyceae.

The troglophilic staphylinid beetle Quedius spelaeus spelaeus Horn 1871, has been found in a number of porcupine dung caves in Nova Scotia where it appears to be the dominant predator on other invertebrates. In culture, late-instar larvae were observed to excavate and remain in cavities excavated in dung, and to pupate in these cavities. The pupa is described for the first time and compared with other pupae in the genus Quedius Stephens. The apparently disjunct distribution of the species in Nova Scotia is discussed and it is suggested that it may have colonized the province from Atlantic glacial refugia.

AbstractA study was conducted in a mature apple orchard in Nova Scotia to compare the density of eggs of the European red mite, Panonychus ulmi (Koch), over the whole tree to their density on a selected area using a random selection and standard selection technique. Both methods provided nearly equivalent estimates of population densities for generations 2 and 4 but not for generation 3. The population estimates based on sampling from the selected area overestimated the whole tree population.Optimum allocation of sampling resources may be obtained by sampling a small number of clusters from each of a large number of trees.

In the Report of the Entomologist and Botanist to the Dominion Experimental Farms for 1905, at pages 179 and 180, considerable space is given to a discussion of an outbreak of a large noctuid caterpillar, which appeared in considerable numbers in Canada during 1905. Complaints of injury by this insect were received from a wide area, extending from Nova Scotia as far west as Lake Superior. During July many kinds of plants in gardens were attacked by smooth cutworm-like caterpillas, which when small were greenish in colour, having the body divided into two equal areas above and below the spiracles by a wide black stigmatal band.

Typhlodromus pyri Scheuten (= T. tiliae Oudms.) is the predominant species of predacious mite on apples in Nova Scotia. It feeds on a wide range of prey species (Herbert, 1959). Chant (1960) investigated the life-history and habits of this species in southeastern England and Herbert (1956) studied its life-history under controlled laboratory conditions. A knowledge of the life-histories of various components of the fauna is basic to an evaluation of predation; therefore, a study of the life-history and habits of T. pyri in the field was undertaken. This was supplemented by a laboratory study in which an attempt was made to duplicate field temperarures. The results of these studies are presented here.

AbstractUtilizing the knowledge of their direct effects, the materials ryania, carbaryl, and Animert V-101 applied to a uniformly distributed population of the European red mite, Panonychus ulmi (Koch), altered the populations in plots in an apple orchard. Trends after treatment in both host mite and predator populations were assessed. Supplementary applications of the acaricides Animert V-101 or dicofol directed against certain generations of P. ulmi controlled outbreaks and altered the faunal levels during the following season. Ryania was largely innocuous to most species of predators with the exception of Atractotomus mali (Meyer) and Diaphnocoris spp., carbaryl was detrimental to most predacious species, and Animert V-101, while selectively toxic to phytophagous mites, was innocuous to all predacious insects and Typhlodromus pyri Scheuten.Phytophagous mite populations may be altered to almost prescribed levels with pesticides when the predator populations are known. This allows selective chemicals to be used to complement the predator effect and maintain red mites below the threshold of damage.
