Mineral concentrations within cells of galls induced by Hemadas nubilipennis (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) on lowbush blueberry: evidence from cryoanalytical scanning electron microscopy

Cryoanalytical scanning electron microscopy was used to examine cellular concentrations of K, P, S, Mg, Ca, Fe, Cu, Ni, and Au in a planed section of an insect gall induced by Hemadas nubilipennis on shoots of lowbush blueberry. Levels of K varied throughout tissues of the gall, with the highest levels within the cytoplasmically dense nutritive cells lining the larval chambers, storage nutritive cells, and peridermal cells. It is postulated that K increases the osmotic potential and size of nutritive cells, thereby facilitating larval feeding. Nutritive cells also contained elevated levels of P and S. Levels of Cu, Ni, Fe, and Au were elevated in epidermal tissues, especially near the stomata. Key words: gall, blueberry, minerals, cryoanalytical SEM, Hemadas nubilipennis, Vaccinium angustifolium.

A new interspecific hybrid in Isoetes, I. maritima Underw. × I. howellii Engelm., is delineated and described from the Shuswap Highlands region of British Columbia by means of cytology and scanning electron microscopy of spores. Isoetes × marensis D.M. Britton and D.F. Brunton, hyb.nov. is the name proposed for this taxon. It is triploid (3x; 2n = 33) and is believed to produce only sterile and (or) aborted spores. Hybrid plants have polymorphic spores that demonstrate size and surface ornamentation features intermediate between those of the putative parents. Three populations were examined, each growing with both of the putative parents in silt and sand among granite cobble over clay along an emergent lakeshore. Isoetes × marensis is the first described North American hybrid involving an amphibious Isoetes. It is expected to be a rare taxon owing to the restricted sympatric area of the putative parents and their tendency to occupy different habitats. The accumulation of copper and nickel in plant tissues and galls of Hemadas nubilipennis on lowbush blueberry near an ore smelter at Sudbury, Ontario, was investigated. Concentrations of these metals in the root, stem, and leaf tissue decline logarithmically with increasing distance from the Sudbury smelter. The pattern of accumulation for copper and nickel in the various tissues was root > stem > leaf > berry; however, metal differences in these tissues were not as great in plants farther from the smelter. The root tissue is the primary site of accumulation of these metals when environmental levels of copper and nickel are high. The highest concentrations of copper and nickel were found in the galls, indicating that gall tissues act as a strong physiological sink for micronutrients and redirect nutrients from the host plant. Symphytum asperum Lepechin, S. ibericum Steven and S. sylvaticum Boiss. were examined morphologically, micromorphologically and anatomically. Scanning electron microscopy was used to examine leaf surface and trichomes of these species. These species had bifacial and hypostomatous leaf types. Epidermal cells of leaves were usually polygonal or irregular in form. The pattern of anticlinical cells may vary in different species and between the upper and lower epidermis of the same species. Stomata are anisocytic and anomocytic in three species. Stomata index is 27.5 for S. sylvaticum, 24.65 for S. ibericum and 21.86 for S. asperum glandular trichomes are capitate in forms and more dense on the lower epidermis than upper epidermis. The pollen of 34 individuals representing the 10 species and subspecies of the section Erythrostictus (Schlecht.) Bentham and 3 species of the section Cymbanthes Bentham in the genus Androcymbium Willdenow was examined with scanning electron microscopy to investigate the degree of morphologic differentiation within and between these two sections of the genus. Diporate pollen morphology was observed for all these taxa except for Androcymbium capense (L.) Krause (section Cymbanthes), which was triporate. Given the specific importance traditionally given to this character, some doubt is cast upon the naturalness of this section. Surface sculpturing was reticulate in both sections for all of the analysed species except for Androcymbium psammophilum Sventenius (section Erythrostictus), which was rugulate-perforated. A canonical analysis of populations based upon four pollen biometrie parameters measured on the analysed individuals belonging to section Erythrostictus was run. The pattern of groups displayed by the corresponding canonical representation furnishes other evidence that supports the establishment of more accurate taxonomic relationships among the species that are presently included in the complex Androcymbium gramineum (Cav.) The lamb rumen walls were rapidly colonized by an abundant bacterial population after birth. This colonization was examined by electron microscopy in neonatal conventional lambs. The sequence of establishment of the epimural species during the 3 weeks following birth, and the distribution of bacteria on the different sacs of the rumen, were examined by scanning electron microscopy. The population was very dense and consisted of a limited number of morphological types by 2 days after birth. Three types of rods were dominant at that time. The microflora was more complex 2 weeks later. Observations by transmission electron microscopy of desquamated epithelial cells revealed the presence of adherent bacteria that are surrounded by fibrous carbohydrate coats and sometimes partially enclosed by invaginations of the epithelial cell. Eleocharis R. Br. achenes were examined employing scanning electron microscopy to ascertain the systematic potential of the achene wall. It was found that the epidermis has useful microscopic characters to assist in the systematic assessment of Eleocharis. Acid-treated achenes, with their cuticle and outer periclinal cell walls removed, revealed micromorphological differences in epidermal features among the 26 taxa studied. Characters of taxonomic interest include the configuration of the anticlinal cell walls, the contour of the cell lumens, in addition to the presence or absence of lumen pits, lumen depressions, and silica bodies. Such characters may be of value in assessing the infrageneric ranks of Svenson. Preliminary results support the Aciculares, Chaetarieae, Leiocarpeae, Multicaules, Ovatae, Palustres, Sulcatae, and Truncatae as natural taxa. In contrast, current data suggest that the Pauciflorae, Ocreatae, Rigidae, and Tenuissimae are unnatural entities. Key words: Cyperaceae, Eleocharis, SEM, achene, micromorphology.

The pollen grains of 18 species of Lagotis have been examined using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy of whole and fractured pollen. The grains are characterized by tricolporate apertures with smooth to sparsely granular ectocolpus membranes; lolongate endoapertures with unthickened margins included within the ectocolpi; relatively large exinous processes over the endoaperture; and columellate, semitectate, reticulate to microreticulate exines with or without supramurial processes. Lumina are reduced in size toward the colpus, but the transition is gradual, and a sharply bounded, differentially sculptured colpus border is absent. Lagotis pollen is distinct from that of the Selagineae and Globularia and indistinct from that of some Veroniceae; however, the characters shared with the latter are of wide occurrence in the Scrophulariaceae. Pollen morphology supports the distinction between L. brachystachya and L. stolonifera. It is consistent with the postulated close relationship between L. micrantha and L. integra, and provides no evidence to support the reestablishment of L. cashmeriana, L. minor, L. pallasii, or L. kunawurensis as species distinct from L. glauca. Dalam kertas kerja ini, struktur dan prestasi pengesanan gas oleh polianilin yang berskala nano yang dimendap di atas transduser lithium tantalate. Polimer berkonduksi ini disintesiskan melalui teknik electropolymerization. Struktur permukaan polianilin dicirikan dengan menggunakan Mikroskop Pengesan Elektron (Scanning Electron Microscopy). Didapati bahawa polianiline yang terhasil dipermukaan transducer adalah 3–dimensi struktur dan poros. Pengesan ini kemudian disiasat prestasinya terhadap konsentrasi gas yang berbeza dan berada dalam keadaan suhu bilik. Kata kunci: Pengesan H2; polianilin, berskala nano; electropolymerization; dop dan nyah–dop In this work, the structural and gas sensing properties of polyaniline nanostructures deposited on 36° lithium tantalite (LiTaO3) conductometric transducers was investigated. The polyaniline nanostructures were synthesized via an electropolymerization method. The morphology of the nanostructured polyaniline was characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). It was observed that the electropolymerised film was a three–dimensional (3D) porous structure of polyaniline fibers and nanotips. The conductometric sensors were exposed to different concentrations of hydrogen (H2) gas at room temperature. By the aid of corrosion-cast, 15 bovine fetuses were examined by scanning electron microscopy and histological observation. Morphogenesis of ruminal microvasculature was preceded by that of the ruminal epithelial layer. Morphology of the intercostal palea region of 34 Festuca species found in North America was investigated using scanning electron microscopy. Palea epidermal features are most diverse in the palea apical region and fully developed in florets approaching anthesis. The intercostal region has long cells 3–15 times longer than wide, with walls that vary from slightly to prominently thickened, and from almost straight to strongly undulate. This variation was observed among paleas collected from different locations and sometimes even on a single palea. The distribution of short cells, almost square in outline, among the long cells varied with species from solitary to paired and from abundant to sparse. Four forms of trichomes were recorded: papillae, hook trichomes, prickle hairs, and macrohairs, with one form usually predominating per species. Silicon was detected in some short cells and commonly in the tips of trichomes. A key to species groups is presented.
