An analysis of growth, growth increments, and the integration of growth increments in a fertilizer test of Picea engelmannii in south-central British Columbia

This study describes a 3-year study of growth in seedlings of Picea engelmannii planted in south-central British Columbia in 1986. Four different seedlots were used and each was subjected to six different levels of fertilization in the nursery and two on planting in the field; they were planted in three blocks. The seedlots planted as well as the interaction between blocks and the seedlots planted had a significant effect on seedling survival. The seedlot that showed the lowest rate of survival was the one displaced upward approximately 1180 m from its origin. The largest seedlings on planting, and in 1989, were from the same seedlot that showed the lowest rate of survival. Despite having the largest seedlings, that seedlot did not have the highest rate of growth. The greatest amount of variation in size, growth rate, and increments of growth is within each combination of treatments. Fertilization in the field was the experimental factor that had a consistent effect on growth and size, aside from size on planting where seedlot and nursery treatment were important. Field fertilizer treatments affected the integration of increments of growth in height and diameter. This treatment also affects energy flow through plants by its impact on growth rate, thus arguing for a correlation between the flows of energy and information. We are unsure if this correlation is causal or casual. Key words: growth rate, integration, Picea engelmannii trials.

The Slocan Syncline, located in the center of the Kootenay Arc, south-central British Columbia, is outlined in its core by deformed Triassic sediments—the Slocan Group. These deformed sediments were originally deposited unconformably into a synform developed on the upward-facing limb of a recumbent, eastward-closing anticline, comprising Paleozoic and older rocks.The first phase of deformation resulted in the development of a recumbent anticline closing to the east. This anticline involved a sequence of rocks ranging in age from Windermere (late Precambrian—Horsethief Creek Group) up to Permian (Milford Group) and was originally developed along almost horizontal axes contained in an axial-plane having a shallow westerly dip. The core of this anticline contains granite gneiss, having a history pre-dating the deposition of the Horsethief Creek Group, which is in imbricate relation with the gneiss.Later, phase 2 deformation refolded this recumbent anticline into a synform and a westerly complementary antiform along shallow southeasterly axes contained within axial planes dipping southwesterly at about 45 degrees. Amphibolite-facies metamorphism (the "Shuswap Metamorphism") accompanied these phases of deformation and culminated in phase 2 time. Phase 1 and phase 2 deformation and metamorphism ate dated at post-Milford Group (Permian) and pre-Slocan Group (Triassic).Slocan Group (Triassic) sediments were deposited into the phase 2 synform, whose limbs consist of variable older rocks. A later non-metamorphic deformation, phase 3, along southeasterly striking axial planes dipping steeply to the northeast tightened the earlier phase 1 anticline and the phase 2 synform, and produced the Slocan Syncline. The Triassic sediments exhibit only phase 3 structures and are cut by the Nelson batholith dated at 171 × 106 years (Early Jurassic). Phase 3 deformation is then dated at post-Triassic and pre-Early Jurassic.Structural and stratigraphic evidence suggests that the phase 1 recumbent anticline herein described is but one of a set of nappes disposed structurally above and below the one presently described, and that the Kootenay Arc is an old structure perhaps resulting from interference of phase 1 and phase 2 deformations.

We compared survival and growth of planted seedlings of Engelmann spruce and subalpine fir across a range of harvest opening sizes (> 10 ha, 1 ha, 0.2 ha, 0.1 ha, 0.03 ha and individual tree selection) from three silvicultural systems trials in high-elevation spruce – subalpine fir forests in south-central British Columbia. Climatic patterns and growing season air and soil temperatures were similar across sites. Seedling survival decreased with opening size. Local site climates, influenced by aspect and moisture and air drainage, were more influential than elevation. Seedling growth was best in large openings and similar in opening sizes from 1 ha to 0.1 ha. Smaller openings created by group selection and individual tree selection methods were not favourable for successful planting at elevations close to timberline. The two species had similar absolute and relative growth rates but spruce responded more strongly to better growing environments. We studied the regeneration niche of Picea engelmannii and Abies lasiocarpa in wet sub-zones of the Engelmann spruce-subalpine fir (ESSF) zone of southern British Columbia. We characterized the niche on transects from clearcuts into adjacent old-growth stands, in terms of aspect, elevation, micro-relief, light, seedbed, canopy cover, and competing vegetation. Fourteen transects were sampled at four watersheds. The sampling design ensured similar representation of small (1–30 cm), medium (31–100 cm) and tall (101–300 cm) saplings, and of both species. In total, 465 Picea and 623 Abies saplings were sampled. For every third sapling, an adjacent microsite with no sapling was selected using a random procedure and correspondingly characterized, enabling a pairwise comparison of microsites with and without saplings. Recruitment of both species was related to rotten wood seedbeds, i.e., mainly logs, but also stumps and root plates. This effect was stronger for Picea saplings, and it decreased with increasing sapling size, suggesting lower survival on rotten wood seedbeds. A higher occurrence of tall Abies saplings, in comparison to small ones, under the cover of canopy trees suggests higher survival under canopy than in gaps. Levels of direct light did not generally differ either between microsites with and without regeneration, or between Picea and Abies saplings. The microsite effects on sapling occurrence were quite consistent across gentle south- and north-facing slopes, upper and lower ESSF forests, sites, and along clearcut – old-growth gradients. The results suggest a strong dependence of Picea and Abies establishment on logs in ESSF forests. In Canada, Lemmon's Holly Fern, Polystichum lemmonii, is restricted to the Baldy Mountain area on the eastern side of the Okanagan River valley in south-central British Columbia. This population represents the northern limits of the species which ranges south through northern Idaho, Washington and Oregon to northern California. In British Columbia, P. lemmonii is associated with ultramafic rocky ridges within a montane forest at an elevation of 1900 m. The population in the Baldy Mountain area is relatively small, unprotected and potentially imperilled by mining exploration, forest road construction or wildfires.

In Canada, Dwarf Woolly-heads, Psilocarphus brevissimus var. brevissimus, is restricted to the Similkameen River valley, south of Princeton in southwestern British Columbia and the extreme southeast and southwest corners of Alberta and Saskatchewan, respectively. This paper deals with the three British Columbia populations which represent the northwestern limit of the species which ranges from south-central British Columbia, southward in the western United States to Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, California and Baja California, Mexico. In British Columbia, P. brevissimus is associated with calcareous vernal pools and ephemeral pond edges in large forest openings. This habitat is rare in the area the few existing populations could easily be extirpated or degraded through slight changes in groundwater levels, coalbed methane gas drilling, housing development or recreational vehicles.

AbstractLarvae of Abagrotis orbis (Grote) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) are climbing cutworms and can damage grapevines, Vitis vinifera L. (Vitaceae), in early spring by consuming expanding buds. A sex attractant would be useful for monitoring this insect in commercial vineyards. (Z)-7-Tetradecenyl acetate and (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate were found in extracts of female abdominal tips. In multiple field experiments, male A. orbis were captured in traps baited with a combination of these two chemicals but not in traps baited with either chemical alone. Males were trapped from mid-September to early October in south-central Washington and south-central British Columbia. Other noctuid moths (Mamestra configurata Walker, Xestia c-nigrum (L.), and Feltia jaculifera (Guenée)) were also captured in traps baited with the A. orbis pheromone and may complicate the use of this lure to monitor A. orbis. Abagrotis discoidalis (Grote) was captured in traps baited with (Z)-7-tetradecenyl acetate but not in traps baited with the two chemicals together.

Critical height ratios for predicting competition between trembling aspen and lodgepole pine were identified in six juvenile stands in three south-central British Columbia ecosystems. We used a series of regression analyses predicting pine stem diameter from the density of neighbouring aspen in successively shorter relative height classes to identify the aspen-pine height ratio that maximizedR2. Critical height ratios varied widely among sites when stands were 8–12 years old but, by age 14–19, had converged at 1.25–1.5. MaximumR2values at age 14–19 ranged from 13.4% to 69.8%, demonstrating that the importance of aspen competition varied widely across a relatively small geographic range. Logistic regression also indicated that the risk of poor pine vigour in the presence of aspen varied between sites. Generally, the degree of competition, risk to pine vigour, and size of individual aspen contributing to the models declined along a gradient of decreasing ecosystem productivity.

New localities of shackanite and related analcite-bearing lavas have been discovered in a broad field of early Tertiary phonolite and mafic phonolite in south-central British Columbia. The development of primary and secondary analcite in these rocks is probably the result of cooling lava during and shortly after extrusion.The possibility of leucite to analcite transformation in Daly's shackanite is unlikely because of lack of petrographic evidence and a preponderance of Na2O over K2O in bulk rock composition. It is also unlikely that analcite, and particularly groundmass analcite, crystallized at great depth and was transported to surface during eruption.
