The endemic North American genus Douglasia has been considered dubiously distinct from its widespread Asiatic relative Androsace, differing primarily in flower color and growth habit. The distinctive nature of Douglasia is reaffirmed here, and the definition of the genus is amplified with additional characters that include an exserted corolla tube, stellate pubescence, multiple scapes, sessile umbels, and a higher chromosome number. A species endemic to Alaska and the Yukon, formerly known as Androsace alaskana, is transferred to Douglasia on this basis. This taxon is apparently closed related to Asiatic members of Androsace and may represent an ancestral link between the two genera. Key words: Androsace, Arctic, Douglasia, Primulaceae.

The presence of B chromosomes is reported in Festuca altaica Trin., where a plant with relatively wide and often flat leaves had a chromosome number of 2n = 4x = 28; an adjacent plant, with conspicuously narrow and tightly rolled leaves, had 2n = 4x = 28 + 2B chromosomes. A first chromosome count of 2n = 42 is reported for Festuca rubra L. ssp. densiuscula (Hackel) Piper, along with observations on the nomenclature and morphology of this west coast subspecies. A first chromosome count for a North American plant of Festuca brevissima Jurtzev is 2n = 14. Collections made in northern Yukon were compared with the type borrowed from Leningrad and with the distribution of this species relative to the other North American diploid Festuca, Festuca aggr. auriculata Drob. A collection of Festuca brachyphylla Schultes from northern Yukon had a chromosome number of 2n = 42, and unusual morphology and phenology were interpreted as the result of a snow patch habitat. A second record for Festuca dasyclada Hackel ex. Beal of a chromosome number of 2n = 28 and justifications for keeping this species in Festuca are presented. Key words: Poaceae, North American, Festuca, chromosomes, morphology, nomenclature.

Modern risk analysis studies of the power system increasingly rely on big datasets, either synthesized, simulated, or real utility data. Particularly in the transmission system, outage events have a strong influence on the reliability, resilience, and security of the overall energy delivery infrastructure. In this paper we analyze historical outage data for transmission system components and discuss the implications of nearby overlapping outages with respect to resilience of the power system. We carry out a risk-based assessment using North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) Transmission Availability Data System (TADS) for the North American bulk power system (BPS). We found that the quantification of nearby unscheduled outage clusters would improve the response times for operators to readjust the system and provide better resilience still under the standard definition of N-1 security. Finally, we propose future steps to investigate the relationship between clusters of outages and their electrical proximity, in order to improve operator actions in the operation horizon.

This paper describes the author’s views on durability and service life of concrete bridges in North America, considering the past, present and future. Historical materials and practices have resulted in disappointing durability and service life that does not meet modern expectations. In recent years formal service life analysis and prediction has been implemented as part of the design process for major projects, typically involving numerical modelling of time to corrosion, and mitigation or avoidance of other forms of deterioration by empirical methodology. These efforts are, however, hampered by a lack of an accepted service life design standard which is adapted to North American practice and materials. Work is under way to answer this need. In the future, further development is needed to provide a better match between expectations and reality, a more practical definition of “service life”, validation of design features implemented to mitigate or avoid deterioration for which there are no available time-based models, and improved validation of numerical modelling parameters that describe exposure conditions and material resistances.

This book explores the status of Chinese intellectuals from 1980 to 2005 and its diachronic change in this period, as represented by dialogues between intellectuals and their leaders in fiction. June 1989 serves as a historical dividing line on which to base this diachronic study. In order to carry out the study, first, the direct speech of intellectuals and their leaders is extracted and compiled into corpora for a ‘key key-words’ analysis (see section 3.3.2 for a definition of key key-words). Second, a stylistic analysis is undertaken with the aim of conducting a more detailed qualitative investigation of the dialogues. Three dialogues in each of the two periods are selected for the stylistic analysis. The key-words derived from this analysis describe features of the speech of intellectuals, the speech of intellectuals as compared to the speech of leaders and the speech of leaders as compared to that of intellectuals. The study shows that the key key-words indicating topics of the speech and those characterising the style of the speech represent the social identity of intellectuals. A comparison of these key keywords between the two periods uncovers the diachronic change in the status of intellectuals. The corpus approach is complemented by a stylistic analysis, which explores dialogues selected from different years to emphasise the diachronic change. A dual model is formulated to incorporate dialogue analysis into a larger structure of goal development analysis. The study shows how speakers use discursive strategies to manage relationships and have their situational goals achieved in interaction. Negotiation of goals invokes the institutional and social identities of speakers, bringing out their status. The research shows that the corpus approach and the stylistic analysis can be combined to present a more comprehensive description of data. It is hoped that this will shed some light on studies of post-Cultural Revolution Chinese intellectuals and on how quantitative and qualitative approaches merge in the investigation of interaction between superiors and subordinates.

Abstract In landscape studies conducted in 2002 and 2003, Lantana camara (L.) ‘New Gold’ and ‘Radiation’ were visited by native butterflies to a greater extent than the remaining eight lantana in the studies. Other lantana visited preferentially but not as consistently included L. camara ‘White Doves’, ‘Firewagon’, ‘Confetti’, and Lantana montevidensis (Spreng.) ‘Weeping Lavender’. In general, the lowest visitation was experienced by L. camara ‘Cherry’ and ‘Carlos’. Total visit duration by one randomly selected butterfly was greater for ‘New Gold’, ‘Radiation’, ‘Firewagon’, and ‘White Doves’ than the remaining lantana. Plant characteristics including inflorescence number, number of flowers per inflorescence, percentage of yellow flowers per inflorescence, growth index, flower morphology, and flower color characteristics differed among cultivars. Cultivar differences that consistently correlated with visitation preferences were inflorescence number in 2002 and 2003, flower number per inflorescence in 2003, percentage of yellow flowers per inflorescence in 2002 and 2003, and growth index in 2003. Flower lightness and flower chroma correlated sporadically with visitation in late September and October 2002 and 2003. Percentage light reflectance of flowers for the wavelengths of green, yellow, orange, and red correlated with visitation in 2003. Based on correlation analysis, the cultivar characteristics that did not contribute to visitation differences included inflorescence width, corolla width, and corolla tube length. In a separate study conducted in 2003 using the same lantana as in the visitation study, nectar volume, carbohydrate composition, and sucrose and fructose concentrations differed among inflorescences. Of ten Lantana evaluated, ‘Carlos’ and ‘Confetti had the largest inflorescence nectar volumes combined from nine flowers while ‘New Gold’, ‘White Doves’, and ‘Weeping Lavender’ had the smallest. The ratio of sucrose to hexose (fructose and glucose) in nectar from ‘Weeping Lavender’, ‘White Doves’, and ‘New Gold’ was greater than that of the remaining Lantana. The lowest ratios of sucrose to hexose were found for ‘Irene’, ‘Hot Country’, and ‘Carlos’, while similar to ‘Cherry’ and ‘Radiation’. The sucrose to hexose ratio for recently opened inner flowers was double that of middle and outer flowers. Sucrose and total sugar concentrations were greatest in recently opened inner flowers compared to middle and outer flowers. While direct comparison to the 2002 and 2003 studies of butterfly visitation preferences was not possible due to experimental design, data trends suggest a possible relationship between sugar composition, inflorescence nectar production and visitation from native butterfly species.
