Nine species of marasmioid fungi are described from material collected in the Hawaiian islands: Marasmiellus pacificus, Marasmius pseudobambusinus var. hawaiiensis, and Marasmius radiatus are described as new; Marasmius sp. is described provisionally; Gloiocephala epiphylla, Marasmiellus mesosporus, and Marasmius androsaceus are first reports for the Hawaiian Islands; Marasmius sphaerodermus and Tetrapyrgos nigripes are redescribed based on Hawaiian specimens. Most taxa are illustrated and compared with phenetically similar taxa. This brings the total number of agarics reported from the Hawaiian Islands to 101 taxa, 23% of which are marasmioid fungi. Key words: Agaricales, Hawaiian Islands, marasmioid fungi.

Two new species of Phialocephala were isolated from the periderm of living branches of forest trees in Germany. In culture, Phialocephala compacta Kowalski & Kehr sp.nov., found on Alnus, is characterized by crowded conidiogenous heads that become deeply pigmented with age. Phialocephala scopiformis Kowalski & Kehr sp.nov., isolated from Picea and other conifers, develops elongated, complex conidiogenous heads with up to 15 series of branches in culture. The taxonomic placement of both new species and their role in endophytism and in natural pruning of branches is discussed. Key words: Picea abies, Alnus glutinosa, Phialocephala compacta, Phialocephala scopiformis, branch pruning fungi.

Calathea hylaeanthoides Kennedy, Calathea retroflexa Kennedy, and Calathea incompta Kennedy are described as new. All three species are endemic to Costa Rica. Calathea hylaeanthoides and C. incompta are from the Osa Peninsula, while C. retroflexa is from midelevation on the Pacific slope of the Cordillera de Talamanca. Calathea hylaeanthoides belongs to Calathea section Breviscapus, C. retroflexa belongs to Calathea section Calathea, and C. incompta belongs to the "Ornata group" of Calathea. Key words: Marantaceae, Calathea, Costa Rica, endemism.

Odontepyris costatus sp. nov. is described from Japan and Taiwan. This new species is most similar to O. formosicola Terayama, 1997 known from Cambodia and Taiwan according to the key to the Eastern Palaearctic Odontepyris. O. costatus sp. nov. can be distinguished from the latter by the relatively small eye and the wide metapectal-propodeal disc. It is also similar to O. telortis Lim & Lee, 2009 known from South Korea, but it is distinguished from O. telortis by the imbricate median area of metapostnotum. The morphological variations and diagnostic characters of the Eastern Palaearctic species are briefly discussed and the modified key to species is provided. Key words: new species, Japan, Taiwan, wing venation

Quantitative attemps to assess species diversity in the absence of a robust taxonomy are questioned. In addition, the sampling methods may be a major source of uncertainty, as illustrated in a commented biodiversity study of the Coleoptera of Sabah. The Sabah members of the staphylinid genus Baeocera Erichson are reviewed and keyed, the following new species are described: B. omnigena Löbl sp. nov., B. rudis Löbl sp. nov., B. secreta Löbl sp. nov., B. sedata Löbl sp. nov., B. segregata Löbl sp. nov., B. seiugata Löbl sp. nov., B. semirufa Löbl sp. nov. Baeocera barbara Löbl, B. obliqua (Löbl), B. rufula (Löbl) and B. serendibensis (Löbl) are reported for the first time from Malaysia, B. doriae (Pic) and B. sarawakensis Löbl are new to Sabah and B. kinabalua Löbl is new to Sarawak. Key words: biodiversity, trends, taxonomy, insects, shining fungus beetles, Borneo

A new species in the Hyphomycete genus Phialocephala is described. The new species Phialocephala virens produces an intense greyish green to turquoise colour on certain media and has smaller conidia, shorter phialides, and shorter conidiophores than previously described Phialocephala species. Its tolerance to low levels of the antibiotic cycloheximide suggests the fungus may have affinities with species of Ophiostoma. Cultures of the fungus cause a bright green stain when inoculated onto sapwood of some conifers. Key words: Phialocephala virens, new species, Hyphomycetes, sapstain.

Four new species of Laboulbeniales collected on insects in New Zealand are described and illustrated: Cucujomyces phycophilus sp.nov. parasitic on Macralymma brevipenne Cameron and Omaliomimus conicus (Fauvel) (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Omaliinae), Diaphoromyces kuschelii sp.nov. parasitic on Menimus spp. (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), Diphymyces penicillifer sp.nov. parasitic on Stenomalium helmsii (Cameron) (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Omaliinae), and Stigmatomyces novozelandicus sp.nov. parasitic on Sapromyza neozealandica Tonnoir & Malloch (Diptera: Lauxanidae). All of the new species are compared with exiting taxa. In addition, Smeringomyces trinitatis Thaxt., Stigmatomyces purpureas Thaxt., and S. spiralis Thaxt. are recorded from New Zealand for the first time, and a review of the known species of Laboulbeniales from New Zealand is presented. Key words: Laboulbeniales, taxonomy, New Zealand.

A new species of the serpulid genus Metavermilia Bush, 1905 and a new record of the genus Omphalopomopsis Saint-Joseph, 1894 are described from deep-sea lava rocks collected from 2,013 m at Cross Seamount, southwest of the Hawaiiarchipelago. Metavermilia zibrowii sp. nov., differs from its congeners mostly by the presence of a simple and concaveoperculum, extent of the thoracic membrane and tube morphology. Omphalopomopsis langerhansii (Marenzeller, 1885)is the type species of the genus and it is only known through its type specimen. This species is characterized by a simpleoperculum with a shallow convex calcareous endplate, cylindrical peduncle, presence of Apomatus chaetae and high num-ber of teeth in the thoracic uncini. This is the first record of this species outside the type locality and both genera are newly recorded for the Hawaiian Islands.
