Substrate control of litter decomposition in four Rocky Mountain coniferous forests

The influence of chemical and physical quality of litter on its rate of decomposition was examined by measuring mass loss from 19 diverse litter types, including leaves, needles, forbs, wood, and roots in the Kananaskis Valley of Alberta, Canada. Litter samples drawn from three adjacent forests of lodgepole pine, white spruce, and Engelmann spruce – subalpine fir, and from a small clearcut area, were allowed to decompose for 3 years at their sites of origin. The best predictors of mass loss were the initial concentrations of lignin and labile material in the litter. Adding N or P contents as a second term, rather than as a lignin to nutrient ratio, significantly improved mass loss predictions. There were abrupt limits for the influence of lignin (above 28%) and N (below C:N of 30:1); similar limits were observed for all predictors except labile content. None of these chemical parameters, nor a physical measure, particle diameter, were useful in predicting rates of decomposition of high-lignin, woody substrates. The relative importance of the various litter quality parameters in determining rates of mass loss in the clear-cut area was very similar to that in the forests, despite considerably more rapid decomposition in the clearcut. The aim of this study was to evaluate the contribution of extruded and fermented wheat bran (WBex-f) to the quality of wheat bread (BR), including the volatile compounds (VC) profile and VC relationship with emotions induced for consumers. A comparison study of BR (prepared with 5%, 10%, and 15% untreated wheat bran (nWB) and WBex-f) quality parameters was performed. It was established that nWB increases dough hardness and reduces BR specific volume. The addition of 5% and 10% of WBex-f was not significant on BR porosity and led to the formation of a high number of large pores. nWB and WBex-f increases the mass loss of BR after baking (by 13.38%), and the control breads showed the highest crust darkness, yellowness, and redness. nWB and WBex-f reduces BR firmness during storage, and WBex-f increases the overall acceptability (OA) of BR (by 26.2%). A strong positive correlation was found between OA and the emotion ‘happy’ (r = 0.8696). In BR prepared with WBex-f, a higher content of pyrazine, methyl-; pyrazine, 2-ethyl-; pyrazine, 2-ethyl-6-methyl-; furfural; ethanone, 1-(2-furanyl)-; benzaldehyde; and 3-furanmethanol was found. Finally, it can be stated that WBex-f could prolong the shelf life of BR and leads to the formation of a specific VC profile, which is associated with a higher OA of the product.

We examined patterns of N and P uptake and release from a wide variety of litter types, including leaves, needles, moss, roots, and wood, for 4 years in three forests (lodgepole pine (Pinuscontorta Loud.), white spruce (Piceaglauca (Moench) Voss)–lodgepole pine, and Engelmann spruce (Piceaengelmannii Parry ex Engelm.)–subalpine fir (Abieslasiocarpa (Hook.) Nutt.)) and a small clearcut, in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta. Decomposition was more rapid and N release began sooner in the clearcut than in the forests, but N release began at the same stage of decomposition at all sites. In most litter types, a period of net immobilization of N was followed by a period of net release; only litter types particularly rich in N had an initial leaching phase. Each litter type initially gained or lost N depending on its original concentration, such that N contents converged after 1 or 2 years. The N content at convergence differed among litter types. Phosphorus was usually released immediately. The rate of P loss also varied according to the initial P concentration, and the P contents of all litter types converged within 1 year. The availability of N and P in the forest floor did not affect the rate of N and P release from a standard substrate placed at all sites. The concentrations of N and P in the litter influenced the rate of uptake of N or P during the first 1–3 years, but was not consistently related to nutrient availability in the forest floors at the four sites.

We classified dead bole wood in an old-growth Engelmann spruce – subalpine fir (Piceaengelmannii Parry – Abieslasiocarpa (Hook.) Nutt.) forest in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, into decay classes and measured dead bole surface area, volume, biomass, and nutrient content. Biomass of dead boles was 70 Mg/ha, about half as large as aboveground live biomass in these forests. Net accumulation of N, P, Ca, and Na occurred with increasing decay. The N:P ratio varied little with decay, approaching a value of 20 in the most decayed wood, typical of that found in other studies of dead boles. Loss of K during bole decay exceeded the rate of weight loss, whereas Mg loss followed weight loss. The total pools of nutrients in dead boles and in parentheses, the amount of nutrients stored in dead boles as a percentage of total above- and below-ground living, forest floor, and dead wood nutrients were 92.2 kg N/ha (7%), 4.89 kg P/ha (5%), 67.9 kg K/ha (16%), 156.6 kg Ca/ha (12%), 28.9 kg Mg/ha (17%), and 0.74 kg Na/ha (9%). Storage of relatively high amounts of Ca in dead wood of most natural forests indicates that management could have a significant effect on its availability in the long term.

The study tests whether the lethal effect of overwintering Engelmann spruce seed in its O-horizon affects Douglas-fir, lodgepole pine and subalpine fir seeds and whether the O-horizons of the three associated species have the same lethal effect on seeds. All seed treatments of each species were stratified in petri dishes in the pure O-horizon (unsterilized and autoclaved) of each species. Seed treatments were untreated, 10% slurry of 50% Captan and powdered 75% Captan.All untreated seeds demonstrated the lethal quality of unsterilized Engelmann spruce O-horizon. Its effects on untreated seeds and powder treated seeds were as follows: Engelmann spruce seed 3.5 and 77.3% (germination of untreated and powdered respectively), subalpine fir seed 1.3 and 20.8, Douglas-fir seed 9.5 and 84.8 and lodgepole pine seed 11.9 and 85.7. Subalpine fir O-horizon was lethal to its own seeds but only moderately harmful to seeds of other species. Douglas-fir O-horizon had a significant adverse effect on its own seeds and was only moderately harmful to seeds of other species. Lodgepole pine O-horizon was almost neutral to all seeds. Autoclaving of the O-horizons and powder treatment of seeds produced similar results.

Semen was collected from four rams, using artificial vagina and viability%, motility% and plasma membrane integrity% were measured. Fresh ejaculates (n = 32) were separated by modified swim-up separation using modified human tubal fluid medium. Four fractions of supernatant were collected at 15-minute intervals. The mean volume, mass activity, concentration, motility%, viability%, normal morphology and membrane integrity% (HOST +ve) of fresh semen were 1.0 ± 0.14, 4.1 ± 0.1 × 109 spermatozoa/ml, 85.0 ± 1.3, 89.4 ± 1.0, 85.5 ± 0.7, 84.7 ± 0.5 respectively. There was no significant (P>0.05) difference in fresh semen quality parameters between rams. The motility%, viability% and HOST +ve % of first, second, third and fourth fractions were 53.4 ± 0.5, 68.2 ± 0.3, 74.8 ± 0.3 and 65.5 ± 0.4; 55.5 ± 0.4, 66.2 ± 0.4, 74.5 ± 0.3 and 73.6 ± 0.3 and 66.7 ± 0.5, 66.8 ± 0.5, 65.2 ± 0.4 and 74.7 ± 0.5 respectively. The motility%, viability% and membrane integrity% of separated semen samples differed significantly (P<0.05) between four fractions. The mean motility% and viability% were significantly higher (P<0.05) in third fraction (74.8 ± 0.3%), whereas the mean HOST +ve% was significantly higher (P<0.05) in fourth fraction (74.7 ± 0.5). All quality parameters of separated spermatozoa were significantly (P<0.05) lower than that of fresh semen. The experiment was conducted to find out the effect of variety, nitrogen level and harvesting time on yield and seed quality of barley. The treatments used in the experiment consisted of two varieties viz. BARI Barley 4 and BARI Barley 5, three harvesting time viz. 35, 40 and 45 Days after Anthesis (DAA) and nitrogen levels viz. 0, 70, 85 and 100 kg N ha-1 . The experiment was laid out in a spilt- spilt-plot design with three replications assigning the variety to the main plot, harvesting time to the sub-plots and nitrogen level to the sub-sub plots. Variety had significant effects on the all yield attributes except fertile seeds spike-1 . Seed quality parameters viz. normal seeds spike-1 , deformed seeds spike-1 , germination (%) and vigour index were statistically significant. The variety BARI Barley 5 produced higher grain yield and seed quality than BARI Barley 4. Grain yield from BARI Barley 5 and BARI Barley 4 were 4.59 t ha-1 and 4.24 t ha-1 , respectively. Significantly, the highest 1000-seed weight (46.90 g) was produced by BARI Barley 5 than (37.90 g) BARI Barley 4. The result revealed that harvesting time had significant effect on yield and yield attributes and seed quality parameters. Seed yield was highest (4.65 t ha-1 ) when the crop harvested at 40 DAA and it was increased linearly from 35 DAA. Maximum quality seed and 1000-seed weight (43.20 g) was obtained when the crop harvested at 40 DAA. All the yields, yield attributes and seed quality parameters were significantly influenced by nitrogen levels. The highest grain yield (5.14 t ha-1 ) was obtained when BARI Barley 5 variety was fertilized by 100 kg N ha-1 and the lowest (3.14 t ha-1 ) was obtained from control treatments. Normal seeds spike-1 , vigour index, germination (%) were better at 85 kg N ha-1 in variety of BARI Barley 5 than BARI Barley 4. So it can be concluded that BARI Barley 5 showed better result when fertilized with 100 kg N ha-1 and harvested at 40 DAA for getting maximum yield and 85 kg N ha-1 and harvested at 40 DAA for getting better quality seed.

This article assesses the reliability, constructive validity and reproducibility of a special questionnaire for determining the quality parameters of rendering physiotherapeutic care to patients with chronic generalized periodontitis. The analysis of literary sources showed that there are studies of quality of dental services, however, we have not met with research into the quality and comfort of physiotherapy procedures for periodontal patients. At the same time, the importance of this issue is obvious and requires study and analysis. Without making judgments about the quality of the service, a full-fledged medical dental procedure can not take place. The assortment of physical devices and methods grows annually, their use in the periodontoloical treatment is not always sufficiently justified, the effectiveness is not always confimed therefore it is important to pay attention not only to the marketing efforts directed by the clinics for comfort, but also to analyze the ideas about the quality of the clinical characteristics of physiotherapeutic procedures.

No real improvement in the technological quality of beet has been recorded over the last 15 years in Northern Italy. Among the possible explanations for the quality stagnation is that the traditional formulae cannot correctly differentiate between sugarbeet varieties which produce thick juice of very high purity. This seems to be connected with the role of potassium. The use of a standard purification procedure gives reliable and accurate data which is immediately comparable with the factory data. Research projects on medium/long term storage are currently being performed by Co.Pro.B., Italy, in cooperation with Syngenta and Beta. Up to now the results have shown that storage of sugarbeet in autumn time in northern Italy is possible provided that suitable varieties and proper handling of the roots are employed. Results obtained in the storage trials are reported. Correlations have been found between quality parameters (purity, color and lime salts) of the purified juice with the glucose content of the raw juice. An interesting correlation is reported between purified juice purity and raw juice purity.

Metropolitan Istanbul Wastewater Treatment System contains 14 marine outfalls, seven of which include secondary stage biological treatment processes. The others have only mechanical treatment units including bar screens and grit chambers. Only one mechanical pre-treatment and marine disposal system, Yenikapi plant, has been operated since 1988 among these 14 plants and six of them are ready for construction. In this paper, the environmental impact of Yenikapi pretreatment and marine disposal system on the water quality of the Bosphorus and the Sea of Marmara has been investigated. Long term water quality measurements which were performed in pre-and post-dischange applications have been evaluated. Water quality parameters including pH, DO, BODs, TKN, P and total coliforms were measured at various sampling stations around the discharge points. A general evaluation of marine outfall systems to be constructed in the scope of Istanbul wastewater treatment project, on the water quality of the Sea of Marmara and the Bosphorus has been presented.
