The early development of Claytonia caroliniana was studied in situ from seeds sown in wirenetting boxes buried in a maple stand near Quebec City. Seed germination begins in late October, more than 4 months after dissemination, reaches a level of about 50% at the end of December, and resumes in springtime. In April–May, one or two secondary roots appear on the most developed seedlings while the single cotyledon (C. caroliniana is a monocotyledonate dicot) shows up above the litter. Concurrently, the corm begins its development at the base of the primary root. A few days later, when the cotyledonary structure disappears, the corm enlarges slightly, new roots begin to form, and an apical bud is activated to initiate the first leaf. The first leaf can reach a length of 4 cm before the winter and will survive under the litter. In April of the following season, 2 years after the beginning of the cycle, the first leaf emerges from the litter, the corm diameter reaching no more than 2–3 mm at this time. The critical stage for the survival of the seedling comes at the beginning of its first summer, as it must produce a corm able to initiate a leaf. This is probably related to the precocity of seed germination. The early phenology of C. caroliniana as a whole resembles that of its adult stages. It differs slightly, however, from the development of C. virginica. Key words: Claytonia caroliniana, seed, germination, seedling, juvenile development.

The objective of this study was to characterize morphologically the seed germination and floral biology of Jatropha curcas grown in Viçosa, Minas Gerais state. The floral biology study was made on fresh inflorescences of 20 plants. For the post-seminal development study, the seeds were submitted to laboratory and greenhouse germination test. J. curcas has flowers of both sexes within the same inflorescence, with each inflorescence having an average of 131 flowers, being 120 male and 10.5 female flowers. Low numbers of hermaphrodite flowers were also found, ranging from 0 to 6 flowers per inflorescence. The germination of J. curcas begins on the third day with radicle protrusion in the hilum region. The primary root is cylindrical, thick, glabrous and branches rapidly, with about 4-5 branches three days after protrusion, when the emergence of the secondary roots begins. Seed coat removal occurs around the 8th day, when the endosperm is almost totally degraded and offers no resistance to the cotyledons that expand between the 10th and 12th day. A normal seedling has a long greenish hypocotyl, two cotyledons, a robust primary root and several lateral roots. On the 12th day after sowing, the normal seedling is characterized as phanerocotylar and germination is epigeal.

The objective: analyse the effectiveness of diagnosis and treatment for early cervical cancer. Materials and methods. Analysed 107 cases of women’s disease on CIN ІІІ, cancer in situ, they were on treatment in National cancer institute and Kyiv dictrict cancer dispensary from 2010 till 2015 years. Results. Diagnosed percent relapse CIN ІІІ, cancer in situ contain 4.57% uninvasive and invasive form – 0.94%. Conclusion. According diagnostic CIN ІІ and CIN ІІІ is recommended to do treatment conization and dynamic dispensary observation. Are making complex program of infection HPV16, 18. In appering of margins resection some elements of tumor after wider conization by forms of cancer in situ. Many of expansive burns in cervical glands, in making of reproductive function, going disease (nodel leiomyoma of corpus uteri etc). In perspective is accept the notion of looking after and screening research of considering infection HPV16, 18 on CIN І, CIN ІІ. To find out the ability of Orobanche seeds to germinate immediately after seed set, seeds were germinated periodically at an interval of three months for one year in GR24. Some Orobanche seeds were capable of germination immediately after seed set but most required about nine months as after ripening or incubation period to be able to germinate. The phenomenon of after ripening in Orobanche seeds could be taken as an ecological measure to dormant over following unfavorable wet summer season. The growth hormone studies on Orobanche seed germination have shown that GA3 at a concentration of 100 ppm substantially enhanced seed germination when applied during pre-conditioning period. NAA showed some stimulatory effect at 0.5 - 1.0 ppm when applied during post-conditioning period but the hormone if applied during pre-conditioning period inhibited the germination. Kinetin failed to stimulate the germination at all the concentrations tested. Key words: Germination, root-parasite, hormone. Ecoprint Vol.11(1) 2004.

Despite increasing reports on the function of CCCH zinc finger proteins in plant development and stress response, the functions and molecular aspects of many non-tandem CCCH zinc finger (non-TZF) proteins remain uncharacterized. AtC3H59/ZFWD3 is an Arabidopsis non-TZF protein and belongs to the ZFWD subfamily harboring a CCCH zinc finger motif and a WD40 domain. In this study, we characterized the biological and molecular functions of AtC3H59, which is subcellularly localized in the nucleus. The seeds of AtC3H59-overexpressing transgenic plants (OXs) germinated faster than those of wild type (WT), whereas atc3h59 mutant seeds germinated slower than WT seeds. AtC3H59 OX seedlings were larger and heavier than WT seedlings, whereas atc3h59 mutant seedlings were smaller and lighter than WT seedlings. Moreover, AtC3H59 OX seedlings had longer primary root length than WT seedlings, whereas atc3h59 mutant seedlings had shorter primary root length than WT seedlings, owing to altered cell division activity in the root meristem. During seed development, AtC3H59 OXs formed larger and heavier seeds than WT. Using yeast two-hybrid screening, we isolated Desi1, a PPPDE family protein, as an interacting partner of AtC3H59. AtC3H59 and Desi1 interacted via their WD40 domain and C-terminal region, respectively, in the nucleus. Taken together, our results indicate that AtC3H59 has pleiotropic effects on seed germination, seedling development, and seed development, and interacts with Desi1 in the nucleus via its entire WD40 domain. To our knowledge, this is the first report to describe the biological functions of the ZFWD protein and Desi1 in Arabidopsis.

An investigation was conducted to demonstrate the applicability of cylindrical piezocone and flat piezoblade tests for providing reliable estimates of the coefficient of consolidation in clays. Coefficients of consolidation were calculated from piezocone dissipation tests for different degrees of consolidation using theoretical time factors to provide a comparison with laboratory oedometer tests. Three techniques were developed to calculate the coefficient of consolidation from piezoblade dissipation tests. Results from in situ pore pressure dissipation tests were compared with laboratory oedometer tests performed on undisturbed samples oriented in both the vertical and horizontal directions, to provide reference values of cv and ch. The results of investigations conducted at several clay sites are presented. Key words: in situ tests, piezocone, piezoblade, coefficient of consolidation, oedometer test, clays.

AbstractSymbiotic associations between animals and microorganisms are widespread and have a profound impact on the ecology, behaviour, physiology, and evolution of the host. Research on deep-sea mussels of the genus Bathymodiolus has revealed how chemosynthetic symbionts sustain their host with energy, allowing them to survive in the nutrient-poor environment of the deep ocean. However, to date, we know little about the initial symbiont colonization and how this is integrated into the early development of these mussels. Here we analysed the early developmental life stages of B. azoricus, “B”. childressi and B. puteoserpentis and the changes that occur once the mussels are colonized by symbionts. We combined synchrotron-radiation based μCT, correlative light and electron microscopy and fluorescence in situ hybridization to show that the symbiont colonization started when the animal settled on the sea floor and began its metamorphosis into an adult animal. Furthermore, we observed aposymbiotic life stages with a fully developed digestive system which was streamlined after symbiont acquisition. This suggests that bathymodiolin mussels change their nutritional strategy from initial filter-feeding to relying on the energy provided by their symbionts. After ~35 years of research on bathymodiolin mussels, we are beginning to answer fundamental ecological questions concerning their life cycle and the establishment of symbiosis.

Field measurements of frozen soil creep in the upper 3.0 m of permafrost indicate that creep occurs in both winter and summer. Between 1992 and 1993, the mean rate of creep ranged from 0.44 cm at 1.6 m depth to 0.16 cm at 2.8 m depth but there was extreme variability. Creep parameters n and A, as defined by the power flow law, were calculated from field data. Parameter n ranged between 1.96 and 2.29 and increased with depth, while A decreased with depth. Comparisons of creep rates for different permafrost environments suggest that ground temperature largely controls the magnitude of permafrost creep. The seasonal variations in the amount and the allelopathic potential of the water-soluble, leaf epicuticular exudates in the Mediterranean ruderal Dittrichia viscosa were investigated. Both parameters peaked during the dry, hot, and sunny summer, confirming the prediction that the seasonal fluctuations should be commensurate with the ascribed antitranspirant and phytotoxic functions. In particular, the drainage of the material to the soil with the heavy autumn rains provides excellent timing for exerting its strong allelopathic interference on seed germination, affording D. viscosa a considerable competitive advantage. The organic reactions that take place during the thermal coking of bitumen are extremely complex and deep-seated, but obviously hydrogen atoms originally attached to carbons that form coke will have moved to a new carbon site (net addition of hydrogen, resulting in upgraded bitumen). Accompanying this process, one expects some general hydrogen shuttling between non-coking molecules. This paper describes an approach to determing the extent of this latter process by the addition of a small amount of perdeuterated pyrene to the bitumen prior to the coking operation. The in situ pyrene functions as in indicator, allowing one to establish the extent and other mechanistic details of the "hydrogen donor" reactions that take place during coking. There is no indication that the pyrene substantially modifies the normal course of the reaction, hence the analogy to an indicator.
