THE GENUS ALEURODISCUS (SENSU STRICTO) IN NORTH AMERICA

The basidiomycete genus Aleurodiscus Rabenh. ex J. Schroet. has been variously interpreted by several authors. In its broadest sense the genus comprises the cyphelloid and corticioid homobasidiomycetes with large basidiospores. Aleurodiscus (sensu lato), thus defined, presently consists of nearly 110 named species, which appear to be referable to about 75 accepted taxa.The present work is a taxonomic re-evaluation of the genus Aleurodiscus. Some attempt to establish specific limits for the North American Aleurodisci follows and the taxonomic position of Aleurodiscus (sensu stricto) is considered. Although particular emphasis has been devoted to the North American species, practically all of the previously described species of Aleurodiscus have been reviewed by the author. When most of the named species of Aleurodiscus are compared, they appear to form a natural assemblage on the basis of their spore amyloidity and marked affinity in microstructure. These species have been retained within the genus Aleurodiscus (sensu stricto) (TYPE SPECIES: A. amorphus (Pers. per Purt.: Fr.) J. Schroet.). Certain species formerly placed in Aleurodiscus belong elsewhere. These species remain either to be reallocated into other recognized genera or to be relegated into new genera. The taxonomy of these non-amyloid-spored species will be discussed in a subsequent paper.Only the amyloid-spored species of Aleurodiscus are accounted for in the present paper. The North American and neotropical species are described, discussed, and wherever necessary illustrated. Considerable emphasis has been placed on nomenclature and synonymy. Distribution and host relationships are mentioned and those specimens examined are cited. Five previously described species are recorded for the North American mycoflora for the first time. These include Aleurodiscus aurantius (Pers. per Fr.) J. Schroet., A. disciformis (DC. per Fr.) Pat., A. fennicus Laurila, A. lapponicus Litsch., and A. tsugae Yasuda. Five species are described as new to science: Aleurodiscus abietis Jacks, et Lemke, sp. nov.; A. laurentianus Jacks, et Lemke, sp. nov. A. macrocystidiatus Lemke, sp. nov. A. piceinus Lyon et Lemke, sp. nov.; and A. spiniger Rogers et Lemke, sp. nov. The combination Aleurodiscus lividocoeruleus (Karst.) Lemke, comb. nov. is provided. A new genus, Aleurocystidiellum Lemke, gen. nov. (MONOTYPE: A. subcruentatum (Berk. et Curt.) Lemke, gen. & comb. nov.), is proposed to accommodate an amyloid-spored species not considered to be cogeneric with the other amyloid-spored Aleurodisci. Aleurodiscus stereoides Yasuda is recognized as a facultative synonym of Aleurocystidiellum subcruentatum (Berk. et Curt.) Lemke.The amyloid-spored species of Aleurodiscus (sensu stricto) have been compared with certain of the other amyloid-spored hymenomycetes, and a key to the amyloid-spored Aleurodisci and allied genera is provided under the heading Stereaceae. A discussion of microstructure and terminology for the genus is given to facilitate the use of the key.

The genus Aleurodiscus Rabenh. ex J. Schroet. (sensu lato) is an artificial assemblage of large-spored 'thelephoraceous' hymenomycetes, which can no longer be maintained as a generic unit. The generic limits and the taxonomic position of Aleurodiscus (sensu stricto) (TYPE SPECIES: A. amorphus (Pers. per Purt.: Fr.) J. Schroet.) have been discussed by the writer (1964) in a separate paper. The present work supplements this earlier work, but is concerned primarily with an appraisal of the non-amyloid-spored Aleurodisci, all of which are removed from Aleurodiscus and either assigned to other recognized genera or relegated to new genera.Accordingly, two new genera and 15 new combinations are devised here to accommodate several species formerly placed in Aleurodiscus (sensu lato). The new genera, one of which is monotypical, are Aleurocorticium Lemke, gen. nov. (TYPE SPECIES: A. acerinum (Pers. per Fr.) Lemke, gen. & comb. nov.) and Licrostroma Lemke, gen. nov. (MONOTYPE: L. subgiganteum (Berk.) Lemke, gen. & comb. nov.). The additional 13 combinations proposed are Aleurocorticium album (Viégas) Lemke, comb, nov., A. alliaceum (Quél.) Lemke, comb. nov., A. candidum (Schw.) Lemke, comb. nov. A. dryinum (Pers.) Lemke, comb. nov., A. griseo-canum (Bres.) Lemke, comb. nov., A. lepra (Berk. et Curt.) Lemke, comb. nov., A. macrodens (Coker) Lemke, comb. nov., A. macrosporum (Bres.) Lemke, comb. nov., A. moquiniarum (Viégas) Lemke, comb. nov., A. nivosum (Berk. et Curt. ex Höhn. et Litsch.) Lemke, comb. nov., A. seriatum (Berk. et Curt.) Lemke, comb. nov., A. strumosum (Fr.) Lemke, comb. nov.; and Aleurocystis magnispora (Burt) Lemke, comb. nov.The genus Laeticorticium Donk (1956: 16) (TYPE SPECIES: L. roseum (Pers. per Fr.) Donk) is confirmed as a valid segregate from Aleurodiscus (sensu lato), but the species of Laeticorticium are not treated here aside from nomenclatural considerations. With the exception of the Laeticorticia, all of the remaining North American and many of the critical non-amyloid-spored species of Aleurodiscus (sensu lato) are reviewed.Particular emphasis is devoted to the genus Aleurocorticium Lemke, gen. nov. and a key to 14 North American species of Aleurocorticium is provided. Seven of the Aleurocorticia are reported from the North American mycobiota for the first time. These seven species, five of which are described as new to science, include Aleurocorticium alliaceum (Quél.) Lemke [= Aleurodiscus alliaceus (Quél) Boidin (1957)], Aleurocorticium dryinum (Pers.) Lemke [= Aleurodiscus dryinus (Pers.) AbstractLarval characterizations for the genera of North American Brachycentridae are revised and two new genera created, bringing to five the total number now recognized on this continent. Previous concepts of larval morphology inMicrasemaare emended. Discovery of the larval stage ofBrachycentrus(Amiocentrus)aspilusRoss necessitates elevation of this subgenus to generic status. Association of larvae with the two North American species placed inOligoplectrumnecessitates removal of one,O.dimicki(Milne), toMicrasema. Discovery of all stages of a new species on Mount Hood, Oregon, necessitates creation of a new genus. A provisional larval key to the genera of the North American Brachycentridae is proposed and the phylogenetic relationships of the genera are discussed. Validity of the Asian genusOligoplectrodesis questioned.

Four new venerid species from the Cretaceous of the North American Pacific Slope are described and four previously described species are reassigned. Of the new species, two are allotted to new genera: Rhaiphiale based upon Rhaiphiale pharota n. sp. and Egrona based upon Egrona fallax n. sp., both Turonian in age and from southern California. The other new species are Loxo quintense n. sp., of late Maastrichtian age from California, and Paraesa cedrina n. sp., late Albian in age from Baja California, Mexico. The previously described species “Meretrix” arata Gabb, 1864, Turonian, and “?Meretrix” fragilis Gabb, 1869, late Maastrichtian, are placed in the new genus Callistalox; “Meretrix” lens (Gabb, 1864), Campanian age, and Flaventia zeta Popenoe, 1937, Turonian, are provisionally assigned to Paraesa Casey, 1952. This is the first identification of Paraesa from the Pacific Slope of North America. No species of Flaventia Jukes-Brown, 1908, is now known in Pacific Slope faunas.

AbstractThe present study of the Eifelian icriodid conodonts is based on collections from Belarus and the Michigan Basin (USA). It is here proposed that forms originally included in Icriodus orri Klapper and Barrick, 1983 can be attributed to I. retrodepressus Bultynck, 1970, Icriodus orri sensu stricto, and Icriodus michiganus new species, each displaying a distinct morphology, stratigraphical range, and geographic distribution. Icriodus retrodepressus, characterized by a triangular spindle, deep depression in its posterior part, and a well-pronounced spur and antispur, appeared in the lower partitus Zone of the lowermost Eifelian and disappeared in the upper Eifelian kockelianus Zone. Icriodus michiganus n. sp., distinguished by a lachrymiform spindle with a shallow posterior depression, ranges from the lower costatus Zone to the upper kockelianus Zone. Icriodus orri differs from the other two species by the occurrence of transverse denticle rows with lateral denticles displaying sharp edges. It ranges from the upper kockelianus Zone to the ensensis Zone of the uppermost Eifelian. Icriodus retrodepressus first occurred in the European part of the Euramerican continent and later migrated into the North American area. Icriodus michiganus n. sp. has been found in the interior part of the North American Craton and near the eastern Euramerican margin. Icriodus orri occurs in the North American interior, in British Columbia (Canada), and in the eastern part of Euramerica (Belarus). The introduction of I. retrodepressus can be related to the transgressive Choteč Event, whereas that of I. orri to a transgressive stage of the Ie eustatic cycle.

A new genus and species of Cyphophthalmi, Canga renatae gen. nov., sp. nov., is described in the family Neogoveidae from a system of caves in the Serra de Carajás, Pará State, Brazil. Canga can be easily distinguished from other neogoveid genera by the presence of a dentate claw on leg I, a unique character among known cyphophthalmid species, and by the free coxa II, which is fused to coxae III and IV in all the other neogoveid species except for the North American Metasiro. The new genus also differs from other Neotropical neogoveids in the lack of a dorsal crest on the chelicerae and in the lack of opisthosomal glands. The finding of a neogoveid in the Pará State greatly increases the known distribution of South American cyphophtalmids into the Eastern Brazilian Amazon forest.

Mimcochylis Razowski, 1985, is reported for the first time from the U.S.A. as Mimcochylis fulvotinctana (Walsingham, 1884), new combination and senior synonym of M. planola Razowski, 1985, new synonym. Sphagnum mires on the Greater Caucasus are rare, characterized by the presence of relict plant communities of glacial age and are in a stage of degradation. The study of Sphagnum of Chefandzar and Masota mires is carried out for the first time. Seven species of Sphagnum are recorded. Their distribution and frequency within the North Caucasus are analyzed. Sphagnum contortum, S. platyphyllum, S. russowii, S. squarrosum are recorded for the first time for the study area and for the flora of North Ossetia. The other mosses found in the study area are listed.

The late Miocene Chinese hipparions are morphologically diversified showing similarity to both western Old World's and North American forms. Two Chinese taxa that are phylogenetically related to western Old World's forms are Hipparion fossatum (= H. forstende) from Baode (Shanxi) and H. hippidiodus from Qingyang (Gansu) and Baode. The former is related to H. mediterraneum and the latter to H. urmiense - platygenys from the Turolian localities in the western Old World. H. fossatum and H. hippidiodus are associated with the “dorcadoides” (open-land) and “mixed” faunas in northern China. Hipparion fossatum that is characterized by POF located close to the orbit co-occurs with large and morphologically specialized form, H. dermatorhinum in Baode (Loc.30). H. hippidiodus with reduced POF is discovered with smaller H. coelophyes in Loc. 43, 44 (Baode) and Loc. 115 (Gansu).The hipparions associated with the “gaudryi” (forest) fauna are characterized by well defined and small POF located far from the orbit. Those forms are: H. platyodus from Loc. 70; H. ptychodus from Loc. 73; H. tylodus from Hsi-Liang in Yushe - Wuxiang basins; and H. sefvei from Loc. 12 at Xin-an in Henan province. H. coelophyes from Baode (Loc.43 & 44) and Qingyang (Loc. 115) also show similar facial morphology to the these forms, although it has small size and shallow POF. Those forms are similar in facial and dental morphology to Hipparion sensu stricto and some species of Cormohipparion in North America.The assemblages of Chinese hipparions are composed of two groups whose members are phylogenetically similar to the forms from both western part of Eurasia and North America. The “gaudryi” fauna is considered younger than the other two on the basis of faunal analyses. The similarity in hipparionine taxonomy between northern China and North America in the latest Miocene is an evidences for possible faunal interchange(s) occurred during that period, as suggested by taxonomic analyses on carnivores and proboscideans in eastern half of Eurasia and North America.

AbstractMorphological, life history, and distributional data are presented for North American species of the subgenus Stygomomonia (sensu stricto) Szalay, 1943. Adults of the seven previously recognized species are redescribed, and deutonymphs of five of these species are described for the first time. Two species, S. (s.s.) neomexicana Cook and S. (s.s.) occidentalis Cook are substantially revised on the basis of an examination of the types and extensive series of newly collected specimens. Three new species are described, S. (s.s.) californiensis on the basis of deutonymphs and adults, and S. (s.s.) imamurai and S. (s.s.) cooki on the basis of adults. A new diagnosis of the subgenus is proposed and discussed, the relationships of the various species are discussed, and a key to deutonymphs and adults of North American species is presented. New distributional data are presented for all species, and dispersal patterns from Pleistocene refugia are discussed.

The 12 species previously placed in Tortopus together with 3 species newly described here, are revised and included in a phylogenetic analysis. Based on synapomorphic characters on the nymphs and adults of both sexes, Tortopus is restricted to T. igaranus Needham & Murphy, T. circumfluus Ulmer, T. harrisi Traver, T. zottai (Navás), T. bellus Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, and T. arenales sp. nov., and the genus is defined by: female parastyli receptors with long furrows anterior to sockets; penes entirely flattened; male ninth abdominal sternum almost separated in two portions by a median notch; mesosternum with furcasternal protuberances contiguous only on basal corner; and nymphs with two subapical tubercles on mandibular tusks. Tortopsis is newly described for T. bruchianus (Navás), T. limoncocha sp. nov., T. obscuripennis (Domínguez), T. parishi (Banks), T. primus (McDunnough), T. puella (Pictet), T. sarae (Domínguez), T. spatula sp. nov., and T. unguiculatus (Ulmer). Tortopsis is characterized by: R sector of female fore wing without additional veins between R 2 and IR; female parastyli receptors C or V-shaped, with sockets opening towards median line; male gonopore associated with a claw-like structure; penes separated from the base; parastyli more than 5 times length of pedestals; parastyli curved in lateral view; nymphs with a single subapical tubercle on mandibular tusks. The study of available type material permitted inclusion of comparative diagnoses, with figures and redescriptions as needed. The male imago of the type species of Tortopus (T. igaranus Needham & Murphy) is described for the first time, as are the female adults of Tortopus bellus Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty and T. harrisi Traver. Three new Neotropical species based on male and female adults are described: Tortopus arenales and Tortopsis limoncocha from Ecuador, and Tortopsis spatula from Colombia. Keys to separate the adults and nymphs of the genera of Polymitarcyidae, and for male and female adults of all the species of Tortopus and Tortopsis are presented, as well as line drawings, pictures and SEM photographs of important structures.
