PHYLOGENY OF CAREX IN THE LIGHT OF PARASITISM BY THE SMUT FUNGI

By using evidence derived from the relationships with smut fungi (Cintractia and Planetella) that attack its members, new light has been shed on the phylogeny of Carex. The genus is believed to be essentially monophyletic and derived from Kobresia. It has been found necessary to erect a new subgenus, Kuekenthalia, composed principally of those sections with persistent styles and bladdery perigynia that were formerly placed in Eucarex. Uncinia is shown to be an offshoot of the evolutionary line that gave rise to Kuekenthalia.

A new subgenus, 19 new species and two new subspecies are described from Vietnam, Laos and China: Tamdaotettix (Tamdaotettix) aculeatus sp. nov., T. (T.) flexus sp. nov., T. (T.) laocai sp. nov., T. (Laotettix subgen. nov.) tarasovi sp. nov., T. (L.) curvatus sp. nov., T. (L.) minutus sp. nov., T. (L.) inflatus sp. nov., T. (L.) sympatricus sp. nov., T. (?) robustus sp. nov., Gigantettix laosensis sp. nov., G. maximus auster subsp. nov., Diestramima hainanensis sp. nov., D. bispinosa sp. nov., D. hamata sp. nov., D. propria sp. nov., D. yunnanensis sp. nov., D. champasak sp. nov., Adiestramima adunca sp. nov., A. bella sp. nov., A. elongata sp. nov., A. perfecta hue subsp. nov. Previously unknown male of G. maximus maximus Gorochov, 1998 and imago of D. palpata (Rehn, 1906) are described on the base of a new material. New distributional data for some species are given.

Terebellids in tidal zone of the Bering Island bear three new symbionts - rhabdophryid suctorians, peritrichs with small rosette-like colonies and aspidiscid hypotrich with a long peristome parallel to left body margin. This is the main feature of a new subgenus of the genus Aspidisca, named Simbiodisca. It may deserve the full generic rank if the use of protargol silvering method will not reveal any upper left rudiment of the peristomal membranelles.

We provide a synthesis of all mammal taxa described from the African mainland, Madagascar and all surrounding islands in the 20 years since 1988, thereby supplementing the earlier works of G.M. Allen (1939) and W.F.H. Ansell (1989), and bringing the list of African mammals described over the last 250 years current to December 2008. We list 175 new extant taxa, including five new genera, one new subgenus, 138 new species and 31 new subspecies, including remarks, where relevant, on the current systematic position of each taxon. Names of seven species of primates are emended, according to the requirements of the ICZN. The taxonomic group in which the largest number of new taxa has been described is the Primates, with two new genera, 47 new species and 11 new subspecies, while geographically the biggest increase in new species descriptions has been on the island of Madagascar, accounting for roughly half (67) of all new species described in the past 20 years. Nearly half of all new species listed currently are assessed as Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (49 of 101 listed species) suggesting further research is urgently needed to help clarify the status of those recently described species.

Leafhopper genera and species of the tribe Mukariini from the Indian subcontinent are revised. Nine genera and 22 species including two new genera, one new subgenus and 12 new species are dealt with. The new taxa described are Aalinga gen. nov. with its type species Aalinga brunoflava sp. nov. (India: Andaman Islands), Buloria indica sp. nov. (India: Karnataka). Buloria zeylanica sp. nov. (Sri Lanka), Flatfronta bella sp. nov. (India: Karnataka; Bangladesh), Mohunia bifurcata sp. nov. (Myanmar), Mukaria omani sp. nov. (India: Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh), Mukaria vakra sp. nov. (India: Karnataka), Mukariella gen. nov. with its type species Mukariella daii sp. nov. (India: Manipur), Myittana (Benglebra) cornuta sp. nov. (India: Karnataka), Myittana (Myittana) distincta sp. nov. (India: Karnataka), Myittana (Savasa) subgen. nov. with its type species Myittana (Savasa) constricta sp. nov. (India: Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand) and Scaphotettix arcuatus sp. nov. (India: West Bengal, Meghalaya, Mizoram). Genera Buloria Distant (new placement), Crispina Distant (new placement) and Myittana Distant (new placement) are placed in the tribe Mukariini. Genus Mohunia is redefined based on the study of its type species. Benglebra Mahmood & Ahmed 1969 is synonymised with Myittana Distant 1908 and considered as its subgenus. Myittana (Benglebra) alami (Mahmood & Ahmed) comb. nov., Myittana (Savasa) bipunctata (Mahmood & Ahmed) comb. nov.. Myittana (Benglebra) introspina (Chen & Yang 2007) comb. nov. and Mukariella bambusana (Li & Chen) comb. nov. are proposed; the first two species were earlier placed in the genus Benglebra, the third species in the genus Mohunia and the fourth in the genus Mukaria. Genera Flatfronta Chen & Li and Myittana are new records for India and Scaphotettix striata Dai & Zhang is a new record for the Indian subcontinent and Sri Lanka. All taxa dealt with are described and illustrated and keys for genera and their species are also given.

Abstract The disjunctive distribution (Europe-Caucasus-Asia) and species diversification across Eurasia for the genus Allium sect. Daghestanica has fascinating attractions for researchers aiming to understanding the development and history of the modern Eurasia flora. However, no any studies have been carried out to address the evolutionary history of this section. Based on the nrITS and cpDNA fragments (trnL-trnF and rpl32-trnL), the evolutionary history of the third evolutionary line (EL3) of the genus Allium was reconstructed and we further elucidate the evolutionary line of sect. Daghestanica under this background. Our molecular phylogeny recovered two highly supported clades in sect. Daghestanica: the Clade I includes Caucasian-European species and Asian A. maowenense, A. xinlongense and A. carolinianum collected in Qinghai; the Clade II comprises Asian yellowish tepal species, A. chrysanthum, A. chrysocephalum, A. herderianum, A. rude and A. xichuanense. The divergence time estimation and biogeography inference indicated that Asian ancestor located in the QTP and the adjacent region could have migrated to Caucasus and Europe distributions around the Late Miocene and resulted in further divergence and speciation; Asian ancestor underwent the rapid radiation in the QTP and the adjacent region most likely due to the heterogeneous ecology of the QTP resulted from the orogeneses around 4–3 Mya. Our study provides a picture to understand the origin and species diversification across Eurasia for sect. Daghestanica.

Meiosis in the smut fungi Ustilago maydis and Ustilago avenae (Basidiomycota, Ustilaginales) was studied by electron microscopy of serial-sectioned freeze substituted basidia. At prophase I, a spindle pole body composed of two globular elements connected by a middle piece was attached to the extranuclear surface of each nucleus. Astral and spindle microtubules were initiated at each globular element at late prophase I to prometaphase I. During spindle initiation, the middle piece disappeared and interdigitating half-spindles entered the nucleoplasm, which was surrounded by discontinuous nuclear envelope together with perinuclear endoplasmic reticulum. Kinetochore pairs at metaphase I were analyzed to obtain a karyotype for each species. The meiotic spindle pole body replicational cycle is described. 1. Many of the Ustilaginales, or smut fungi, appear to have the qualities necessary for the application of modern techniques of microbial genetics.Ustilago maydisis considered the most suitable species.2. Investigations of the mating system confirm reports that the production of diploid brandspores in the host is controlled by alleles at two loci.3. Genetic markers were obtained by inducing mutations in a wild-type strain with ultra-violet light. Of 100 biochemical mutants which were isolated, the growth requirements of 94 were identified. Thirty of these were used in genetic tests.4. The compact growth of colonies on artificial media allowed new techniques to be developed by means of which large samples of progeny could be isolated and identified easily. The analysis of brandspore colonies consisting of the products of single meiotic divisions is the quickest method for detecting linkage, but its accurate measurement appears to be achieved by examining the individual members of tetrads.5. Linkage was detected relatively rarely, but eight markers, including theamating-type locus, were assigned to one or other of two linkage groups. Although recombination values were not always determined accurately owing to irregular basidiospore germination, the auxotrophic markers in each group could be mapped in a linear order. Since no indication of other linkage groups was obtained, the genetic evidence is so far consistent with cytological reports that the basic haploid chromosome number is two in the smut fungi.6. Three linked markers were used to investigate chromatid interference by tetrad analysis. None was detected in a total of eighteen double exchanges.

The species of Tornoceras , Parodiceras , Epitornoceras and Aulatornoceras in North America are described. The study provides an independent stratigraphical goniatite zonation, particularly for the New York State Devonian, and it also provides an analysis of allomorphis in Tornoceras . A discussion on the protoconch apparatus and the significance of the metamorphosis at the nepionic constriction in Tornoceras is given. For the Tornoceras stock descriptions are provided where possible of the ontogeny from protoconch to adult of species at eleven successive stratigraphical levels, and faunas at other levels are also described. Thus the successional ontogenies shed light on the phylogeny of the stock. Faunas at each level may be morphologically defined, but few consistently maintained evolutionary trends have been observed. Shell form seems particularly subject to independent, and probably phenotypic variation. Through the equivalents of the Middle Devonian to the lower Frasnian, protoconch width appears to increase progressively. Similarly the suture becomes more undulating, particularly with regard to the steepness of the ventrad face of the lateral lobe. Later species show reversion to early characters in these respects. The origin of Tornoceras from Parodiceras is argued, and it is considered that Tornoceras gave rise to all later members of the Tornoceratidae. A new subgenus, Linguatornoceras , is erected for Frasnian and lower Famennian tornoceratids with small lingulate lateral lobes. Seven new species and subspecies are described.
