New species of freshwater diatoms from acidic localities along the Atlantic Coastal Plain of the United States

During our investigations of freshwater sites along the Atlantic Coastal Plain of North America we had the opportunity to critically study five interesting diatoms with light (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), each of which is described here as a new species. Two of the organisms are in the genus Eunotia , Eunotia lewisii Siver & Hamilton sp. nov. and Eunotia quadra Siver & Hamilton sp. nov.; two in Frustulia , Frustulia crispula Siver, Pelczar, & Hamilton sp. nov. and Frustulia inculta Siver, Pelczar, & Hamilton sp. nov.; and the last is Neidium trainori Siver & Hamilton sp. nov. All five species are reported from acidic, poorly buffered, dilute waterbodies high in dissolved humic substances. Two of the taxa are found in suites of waterbodies in close geographic proximity, two in somewhat disjunct regions, and the fifth is only known from the type locality. The relationships of each taxon to similar species are discussed.

A new species of the marsupial Peradectes is described from the early Eocene Nanjemoy Formation of Virginia. It is the first Tertiary marsupial known from the Atlantic Coastal Plain north of Florida. The smallest species of Peradectes, it is more closely related to species known from the Western Interior of North America than to contemporaneous European species.

The Coastal Plain of the southeastern U. S. is one of the planet’s top biodiversity hotspots and yet many taxa have not been adequately studied. The plethodontid salamander, Desmognathus auriculatus, was originally thought to occur from east Texas to Virginia, a range spanning dozens of interfluves and large river systems. Beamer and Lamb (2008) found five independent mitochondrial lineages of what has been called D. auriculatus in the Atlantic Coastal Plain, but did not examine the extensive distribution of D. auriculatus in the Gulf Coastal Plain. We present morphological and molecular genetic data distinguishing two evolutionarily independent and distantly related lineages that are currently subsumed under the taxon D. auriculatus in the eastern Gulf Coastal Plain. We describe one of these as a new species, Desmognathus valentinei sp. nov., and assign the second one to D. auriculatus which we formally redescribe.

Three new species of Lumbriculidae from southeastern North America are attributed to Eclipidrilus Eisen. All are small worms (diameter 0.2–0.5 mm), having semi-prosoporous male ducts with the atria in X, and spermathecae in IX. Eclipidrilus breviatriatus n. sp. and E. microthecus n. sp. have crosshatched atrial musculature, similar to some E. (Eclipidrilus) species, but they differ from congeners in having small, compact spermathecal ampullae. Eclipidrilus macphersonae n. sp. has a single, median atrium and spermatheca. The new species have been collected only in Sandhills and Middle Atlantic Coastal Plain streams of North Carolina.

A new species of Dineutus Macleay, 1825 is described from the Southeastern CoastalPlain of the United Sates. Habitus and aedeagus images as well as illustrations of elytralapices, protarsus, palps, and male mesopretarsal claws are provided for Dineutus shorti n.sp. and compared to those of D. discolor Aubé, 1838. The importance of theSoutheastern Coastal Plain as a biodiversity hotspot and the potential conservationconcern of D. shorti n. sp. also are discussed.

Atlantic Coastal Plain Flora (ACPF) are a group of plants mostly inhabiting lakeshores along the Atlantic coast of the United States, with disjunct populations in Nova Scotia and Ontario. To better define their ecological requirements, the main objective of this study was to determine the factors (biotic and abiotic habitat components) influencing ACPF communities (distribution, species abundance, and richness) at both the landscape and local scales. On 16 lakeshores in southwestern Nova Scotia, we characterized ACPF communities and habitat within 20 cm square contiguous quadrats distributed along 20 m transects (landscape scale) and in 5 m × 5 m grids (local scale). Performing redundancy analysis (n = 16 transects), we found that at the landscape scale, shoreline slope and shrub species distribution influenced the quantity of suitable habitat available for ACPF, with mineral shorelines supporting higher ACPF richness. Using spatial generalized linear mixed models (n = 3125 quadrats in five grids), we found that elevation, vegetation elements (shrubs, sundews, graminoids), and substrate type mostly influenced ACPF presence and abundance. ACPF also showed inter-specific differences in habitat preferences. Defining ACPF ecological requirements at both the landscape and local scales is important to guide conservation and management actions in Nova Scotia and throughout their North American range.
