The interaction between a fluid flow and a transversely isotropic porous medium is described. A homogenized model is used to treat the flow field in the porous region, and different interface conditions, needed to match solutions at the boundary between the pure fluid and the porous regions, are evaluated. Two problems in different flow regimes (laminar and turbulent) are considered to validate the system, which includes inertia in the leading-order equations for the permeability tensor through a Oseen approximation. The components of the permeability, which characterize microscopically the porous medium and determine the flow field at the macroscopic scale, are reasonably well estimated by the theory, both in the laminar and the turbulent case. This is demonstrated by comparing the model’s results to both experimental measurements and direct numerical simulations of the Navier–Stokes equations which resolve the flow also through the pores of the medium.

The shear behavior of masonry strengthened with natural fabric-reinforced cementitious matrix (NFRCM-strengthened masonry) is investigated through two different numerical models: a multi-layer model considering masonry and reinforcement as different materials and a multi-step homogenized model, where reinforced masonry is considered as a whole. The approaches are compared by performing nonlinear numerical pushover analysis with an increasing shear action applied to the panels. The parametric analysis shows the capacity and limits of both continuous diffused models – defined as a multi-or a single layer - to represent reinforced masonry in-plane behavior.

In this work, applicability of homogenization approach is verified with the micromechanics approach by considering wavy orthotropic fiber composite. Thermal conductivities of [Formula: see text]-300 orthotropic wavy fiber composite are determined for micromechanical model and compared with the results obtained by two stage homogenized model over volume fraction ranging from 0.1 to 0.6. Also, a methodology is suggested for reducing percentage deviation between homogenization and micromechanical approaches. Effect of debond on the thermal conductivities of wavy orthotrophic fiber composite is studied and compared with perfectly aligned fiber composite for different volume fraction. It is observed that results obtained by the homogenization approach are in good agreement with the results obtained through micromechanics approach. Maximum percentage deviation between homogenized and micromechanics models is 2.13%.

We study the propagation of water waves over a ridge structured at the subwavelength scale using homogenization techniques able to account for its finite extent. The calculations are conducted in the time domain considering the full three-dimensional problem to capture the effects of the evanescent field in the water channel over the structured ridge and at its boundaries. This provides an effective two-dimensional wave equation which is a classical result but also non-intuitive transmission conditions between the region of the ridge and the surrounding regions of constant immersion depth. Numerical results provide evidence that the scattering properties of a structured ridge can be strongly influenced by the evanescent fields, a fact which is accurately captured by the homogenized model.
