The repercussion on the immune response of the expression of intraspecific aggressiveness in the face of a stressor agent was investigated in rats. Ninety-day-old animals were divided into three groups: the control group (only immunological measurements were performed), the foot-shock (FS) (animals individually receiving FS), and the intraspecific aggressive response (IAR) group (animals receiving FS and presenting IAR). For immunological measurements, blood samples were collected promptly at 7 and 15 days after FS or IAR. The FS reduced the total leukocyte amount presented. However, aggressiveness triggered not only reduction of the leukocytes, but also lymphocyte decrease and neutrophil increase. Moreover, an elevation in total leukocytes associated with an increase in the humoral immune response was also observed one week after IAR. In this study, the expression of intraspecific aggressiveness in the face of a stressor seemed to activate the immune system and to potentiate the antigen specific humoral response.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of partially purified Fusarium verticillioides fumonisins (FB) on the specific humoral response in mice infected with Paracoccidioides brasiliensis (Pb), the agent of paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM). Four groups of male Swiss mice were used (total 44 mice): infected (Pb), treated (FB), infected and treated (Pb/FB) and uninfected and untreated (PBS). Groups Pb and Pb/FB were inoculated i.v. with 1x105 Pb yeast cells (strain Pb18) and, after 28 days, groups FB and Pb/FB were inoculated (s.c.) with partially purified FB from F. verticillioides (5x2.25 mg FB/kg body weight). After 7 days, the plasma levels of total IgG and anti-gp43 IgG (specific antibody) were analysed by immunoenzyme assay (ELISA). The total IgG level was higher in groups Pb, FB and Pb/FB than in PBS (P<0.05) and the anti-gp43 IgG level was raised in groups Pb and Pb/FB, but a significant result was obtained only in Pb/FB, relative to the other groups (P<0.05). In conclusion, FB or other components of F. verticillioides extracts significantly increase the specific antibody response in male Swiss mice infected with Pb.

ABSTRACT In this study, we assessed the effect of administering the antibiotic amoxicillin to rat pups on the immune response to orally fed ovalbumin (OVA). We first established that amoxicillin administration durably altered the gut microbiota of these animals. In parallel, we observed that the induction of the specific humoral response to ovalbumin was impaired when it occurred during antibiotic administration to the rat pups. We also examined the consequences of those observations on further allergic reactions. Amoxicillin administration had no significant impact on subsequent sensitization to OVA, as nonexacerbated systemic allergic responses were induced in antibiotic-treated animals. However, increased rat mast cell protease II levels and higher mast cell numbers were detected in their small intestines, independently of the antigen administration. Globally, our data suggest that antibiotic administration early in life negatively affects the specific immune response to a luminal antigen when it is first introduced during antibiotic administration. The increased mast cell numbers and mediator concentrations in the intestinal mucosae of the antibiotic-treated animals may testify to the early stages of an altered immune system homeostasis.
