A new PVC membrane electrode highly selective to Mn(II), based on 2,2′-bis(salicylideneamino)azobenzene as an ionophore. The electrode exhibits a Nernstian response to Mn(II) ions over a concentration range 0.8 × 10–1–1.1 × 10–7 mol l–1 with a slope of 30.5 ± 0.5 mV per decade and detection limit 5.5 × 10–8 mol l–1. The electrode was used for 45 days at the minimum without any measurable potential divergence. Also, the electrode revealed a fairly good discrimination ability between Mn(II) ions and some cations and anions. The electrode was also utilized as indicator electrode in the potentiometric titration of Mn(II) with EDTA and in determination of Mn(II) in drug as well as tape and river water.

AbstractA new poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC) membrane electrode using 2-benzoylpyridine semicarbazone as membrane carrier with dioctylphthalate as plasticizer and sodium tetraphenylborate (NaTBP) as anion excluder has been fabricated and investigated as Zn(II)-selective electrode. Best potential response is observed for the composition PVC 30%, plasticizer 58%, NaTBP 8% and ionophore 4% (w/w). The sensor showed a linear stable response over a concentration range of 1.0 × 10−2–4.56 × 10−6 M with a detection limit of 2.28 × 10−6 M and a response time <10 s. The electrode can be used for at least six months without any divergence in potential.

A PVC-membrane-based Mg(II) selective electrode was constructed using methyl phenyl semicarbazone (MPS) as a neutral carrier. The sensor exhibits a Nernstian response for Mg(II) ion over a wide concentration range1.0×10-8  to  1.0×10-1 M with the slope of 28.4 mV/per decade having detection limit1.7×10-9 M. It was relatively a fast response time (<10 s for concentration≥1.0×10-3and<15 s for concentration of≥1.0×10-6 M) and can be used for 8 months without any considerable divergence in potentials. The proposed sensor revealed relatively good selectivity and high sensitivity for Mg(II) over a mono-, di-, and trivalent cation and can be used in a pH range of 1.0–9.5. It was also successfully used as an indicator electrode in potentiometer titration and in the analysis of concentration of magnesium in various real samples.

The construction and characteristic performance of PVC membrane electrode responsive to sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) are described in this paper. The electrode is based on hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide-Sodium dodecylsulfate (CTA+DS−) ion pair as ionophore in PVC membrane, which displays a Nernstian slope of −58 ± 0.9 mV/decade in a 5.0 × 10−6to 2.5 × 10−3 mol L−1concentration range and a limit of detection of 2.9 × 10−6 mol L−1. The electrode can be used for 3 months without showing significant changes in the value of slope or working range. Also the electrode has wide pH range of application and short response time. The electrode shows a selective response to SDS and a poor response to common inorganic anions. The selective sequence found was SDS > HCO3 −> CH3COO−> Cl−> I−> NO3 −≈Br−> F−> CO3 2−> C6H5O7 3−> C2O4 2−> SO4 2−> C4H4O6 2−> SO3 2−> PO4 3−. The potentiometric selectivity coefficients determined are indicating that common anions would not interfere in the SDS determination. The electrode has been utilized as an end point indicator electrode for potentiometric titration involving hyamine as titrant.

A new Eu3+PVC membrane electrode based on 1,2-diaminopropane-N, N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid (DAPTA) as a suitable ionophore has been prepared and studied. The electrode shows a good selectivity for Eu(III) ion with respect to most common cations including alkali, alkaline earth, transition and heavy metal ions. This electrode has a wide linear dynamic range from 1.0×10-6to 1.0×10-2M with a Nernstian slope of 19.7±0.5 mV per decade and a low detection limit of 7.2×10-7M in the pH range of 2.5–9.1, while the response time was rapid (<10 s). The practical utility of the electrodes has been demonstratedby their use as indicator electrodes in the potentiometric titration of Eu3+ions with EDTA and for the determination of Eu3+in some water sample solutions.
