Some new 17a-homolactones were prepared from 3β-hydroxy-16-(hydroxyimino)androst-5-en-17-one (1) as a starting compound, which was transformed first to the corresponding 17α-phenyl and 17α-benzyl derivatives 2 and 3. The structure of compound 3 was confirmed by X-ray structure analysis. Beckmann fragmentation of compounds 2 and 3 yielded 16,17-seco-cyano ketones 4-7, whose reduction with NaBH4 gave 16,17-seco-cyano alcohols 8-11, whereby the structure of compound 7 was established by X-ray structural analysis. Compounds 8-11 served as the starting compounds for obtaining lactones 12 and 13 in a reaction with potassium hydroxide in ethylene glycol. One-pot procedures were also developed for preparing 17a-homolactones 12, 13 and 16 from the hydroxyimino alcohols 2, 3 and 14. Compounds 12 and 13 showed an inhibitory activity against the enzyme aromatase (63 and 59%, respectively).

Photocatalytic activity of monosized AuZnO composite nanoparticles with different compositions were synthesized by the one-pot polyol procedure, using the triblock copolymer poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(propylene glycol)-blockpoly(ethylene glycol) (PEO-PPO-PEO) as the surfactant. The structure and morphology of the composite nanoparticles were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), a transmission electron microscope (TEM) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The characterization showed that the AuZnO composite nanoparticles were spherical, with narrow particle size distribution and high crystallinity. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) study confirms the PEO-PPO-PEO molecules on the surface of the composite nanoparticles. The investigations by ultraviolet-visible light absorbance spectrometer (UV-Vis) and photoluminescence spectrophotometer (PL) demonstrate well the dispersibility and excellent optical performance of the AuZnO composite nanoparticles. Photocatalytic activity and reusability of the AuZnO nanoparticles in UV and visible light regions was evaluated by the photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB). The experimental results show that the AuZnO composite nanoparticles with a suitable amount of Au loading have stability and improved photocatalytic activity. AuZnO composite nanoparticles are effective and stable for the degradation of organic pollutants in aqueous solution.

A series of 2-(2-aminophenyl)-4-arylquinazoline derivatives (5a - j), with various 4-substituents, have been synthesized by one-pot cyclization in 66 - 79% yield by heating 2-aminoarylbenzimidamides 3a - j with isatoic anhydride (4). The high yield and simplified workup procedure, in addition to the neutral reaction conditions, are the main advantages of our approach. The structure of the product 5e was further confirmed by single-crystal X-ray structure analysis

4-Bromo-3-formyl-1,2-dihydronaphthalenes undergo Suzuki cross coupling and Wittig olefination reaction in a one pot procedure. The trienes obtained can be cyclised thermally under concomitant dehydrogenation to dihydrophenanthrothiophenes and dihydrophenanthro[1]benzothiophenes. An X-ray crystal structural analysis was carried out for ethyl (E)-3-[1-(1-benzothiophen-3-yl)-3,4-dihydro-2-naphthyl]propenoate.

[Li(tmed)]3[Sm(CH3)6] reacts with tert-butanol in diethyl ether to give [Li5Sm(O–t-C4H9)8] (1), the structure of which has been elucidated by X-ray structure analysis. 1 crystallizes tetragonally with a = 1703(4) and c = 3178(1) pm, space group P41212, Z = 8. The structure was refined to R = 0.042 for 4082 observed reflections (Fo > 6σ(Fo)).

A one-pot synthesis of sterically congested electron-poor N-vinyl pyrazoles in fairly good yields by the reaction of ethyl 3-phenyl-2-propynoate, pyrazoles and triphenylphosphine is reported. The structures of these compounds were confirmed by IR, 1H, and 13C NMR spectroscopy, and single crystal X-ray structure determination. The structural analysis of the products indicated that the reaction is completely regio- and stereoselective.

Nanodendritic Pt-based bimetallic alloys are one promising catalyst with three-dimensional (3D) networks structure composed of integrating branches for electrochemical catalytic reaction. We successfully synthesized dendrites Pt6Ir4 alloy with small size of 20 nm in oleylamine. The dendritic Pt6Ir4 alloy are characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The electrochemical tests suggest that the as-prepared dendritic Pt6Ir4 alloy exhibits greatly enhanced ethylene glycol oxidation reaction (EGOR) activity than commercial Pt/C with high EGOR mass activity, anti-poisoning and stability.
