The behaviour of hydrogen, in its contact with the iridium and the tungsten filament kept at different temperatures, was studied in the pressure range 1.3 . 10-6 - 1.3 . 10-3 Pa, in a glass apparatus. The effects of adsorption, atomization, desorption, recombination of atoms and chemical reactions were investigated as a function of temperature of the filaments. The named individual processes were used for interpretation of the partial pressure changes in the apparatus. The significance of the above individual phenomena in the UHV experiments is pointed out in this paper.

An increased demand for energy in recent decades has caused an increase in the emissions of combustion products, among which carbon-dioxide is the most harmful. As carbon-dioxide induces negative environmental effects, like global warming and the greenhouse effect, a decrease of the carbon-dioxide emission has emerged as one of the most urgent tasks in engineering. In this work, the possibility for the application of the polymer-based, dense, mixed matrix membranes for flue gas treatment was tested. The task was to test a potential decrease in the permeability and selectivity of a mixed-matrix membrane in the presence of moisture and at elevated temperature. Membranes are based on two different poly(ethylene oxide)-based polymers filled with two different zeolite powders (ITR and IWS). An additive of detergent type was added to improve the contact properties between the zeolite and polymer matrix. The measurements were performed at three different temperatures (30, 60, and 90 °C) under wet conditions, with partial pressure of the water equal to the vapor pressure of the water at the given temperature. The permeability of carbon-dioxide, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen was measured, and the selectivity of the carbon-dioxide versus other gases was determined. Obtained results have shown that an increase of temperature and partial pressure of the vapor slightly increase both the selectivity and permeability of the synthesized membranes. It was also shown that the addition of the zeolite powder increases the permeability of carbon-dioxide while maintaining the selectivity, compared to hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen.

ABSTRACTResistive type sensors using 10 mol% Hf-doped ceria and 10 mol% Zr-doped ceria, which had a single cubic phase obtained by solid state reaction, were fabricated and their sensing properties were investigated. The resistance and resistivity of the 10 mol% Hf-doped ceria or 10 mol% Zr-doped ceria were smaller than those of non-doped ceria. In the case of the same temperature of solid state reaction, the resistance and resistivity of the 10 mol% Hf-doped ceria were much smaller than those of the 10 mol% Zr-doped ceria. Furthermore, in the case of the same dopant, the resistance and resistivity of the sensor prepared from the solid state reaction at 1773 K were much smaller than those at 1673 K. The sensor using the 10 mol% Hf-doped ceria could be used as an oxygen gas sensor in wide oxygen partial pressure range and could be applicable to a λ sensor and a universal A/F sensor.

Via in situ electrical property measurements (conductivity, Seebeck coefficient) over the temperature range 500–800 °C and oxygen partial pressure range 10−4-1 atm, the equilibrium transport properties and stability range of YBa2Cu4O8 were determined. YBa2Cu4O8 behaves like the intrinsically mixed-valent compound, magnetite (Fe3O4), with small variations in electrical properties with changes in oxygen partial pressure. The decomposition boundary to YBa2Cu3O6+y (or YBa2Cu3.5O7.5±z) and CuO occurs at log(po2, atm) = −1.24 × 104/T(K) + 11.01(773 ⋚ T(K) ⋚ 1073).

In this research, the influences of the oxygen impurity contained in the commercially available nitrogen gas on the reactions of chromium pellets with nitrogen were investigated in the temperature range 600–1350 °C. A small amount of oxygen competed with the majority N2 to react with chromium in the annealing process. Analyzing the in situ oxygen partial pressure changes during annealing proved that the dissolution of oxygen in Cr and/or resultant CrxN (CrN or Cr2N) was exothermic and the solubility decreased with increasing temperature. It was found that the oxygen partial pressure decreased drastically to about 10−22 atm when specimens were annealed at 600 °C compared to a mere 10−5 atm for a blank test, while its value increased with temperature. The oxidation involved simultaneous dissolution of oxygen in specimens and formation of oxide scale. Moreover, comparing the aforementioned results with those obtained from additional annealing experiments preformed in argon gas showed that the formation of Cr2O3 might stem mainly from oxidation of the resultant nitrides instead of the metallic chromium.

Tracer diffusion of 85Sr in polycrystalline Bi2Sr2Can-1CunO2n+4 has been investigated for n = 1, 2, and 3 in an oxygen atmosphere between 775 and 850 °C. A radiotracer serial-sectioning technique was used to measure the concentration profiles, which were fit to a solution of the diffusion equation to calculate the diffusivities. The activation energies were 403, 553, and 519 kJ/mole, for n = 1, 2, and 3, respectively. However, the absolute values of D for the various layered superconductors did not differ by more than an order of magnitude over the measured temperature range. The diffusivity of Sr at 800 °C for n = 1 or 2 over an oxygen partial pressure range of 103 to 105 Pa increased as the pressure decreased.
