The effect of cation-active tenside 1-carbethoxypentadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (Septonex) on the absorption spectra of selected triphenylmethane dyes, eriochromcyanine R and bromopyrogallol red, was studied. The effect of the micelle aggregates of the tenside on the spectrophotometric characteristics of the individual dissociated forms of the dyes was demonstrated and the influence of strong electrolytes (NaCl, NaNO3) was studied. The interaction of both dyes with the micelle form of the nonionic tenside Triton X-100 was studied under similar experimental conditions.

The absorption spectra of the binary complexes of lanthanoids with bromopyrogallol red were measured and the formation of ternary complexes with cation active tenside, Septonex, was studied. Optimal conditions were found for the formation of these complexes and the possibility of their use in the photometric determination of lanthanoids was demonstrated on several examples.

A study was carried out of the effect of a strong electrolyte (NaNO3) on the change in the electron spectra (in the visible region) of bromopyrogallol red in the presence of Septonex, sodium dodecyl sulfate and Triton X-100. It was confirmed that NaNO3 has a marked effect on the solubilization of the dissociated forms of the dye in Septonex, in contrast to solubilization by Triton X-100.

The composition, optical characteristics, molar absorption coefficients and equilibrium constants of the reactions of formation of the ML and ML2 complexes of both reagents with cadmium(II) ions were determined by graphical analysis and numerical interpretation of the absorbance-pH curves by the modified SQUAD-G program. Optimal conditions were proposed for the spectrophotometric determination of Cd in 10% v/v ethanol medium in the presence of 0.1% w/v Triton X-100 or 1% w/v Brij 35. BrPADAP and ClPADAP are the most sensitive spectrophotometric reagents for the determination of cadmium(II) ions (ε = 1.28-1.44 . 105 mmol-1 cm2 at 560 nm and pH 8.0-9.5) with a high colour contrast in the reaction (Δλmax ~117 nm) and a selectivity similar to that of other N-heterocyclic azodyes (PAR, PAN, etc.).

The optical and acid-base characteristics of BrPADAP and ClPADAP were studied in mixed water-ethanol and water-DMF media and in 10% ethanol medium in the presence of cationic, anionic and nonionic tensides. The composition, optical characteristics, molar absorption coefficients and equilibrium constants of the ML and ML2 complexes with zinc(II) ions were found by graphical analysis and numerical interpretation of the absorbance curves by the modified SQUAD-G program. Optimal conditions were found for the spectrophotometric determination of Zn(II) in the presence of 0.1% Triton X-100 or 1% Brij 35 in alkaline media with pH = 6.5-10. BrPADAP and ClPADAP are the most sensitive reagents (ε = 1.3-1.6 . 105 mmol-1 cm2 at 557 and 560 nm, respectively) for the determination of zinc with high colour contrast of the reaction (Δλ = 104 nm) and selectivity similar to that for the other N-heterocyclic azodyes (PAN, PAR, etc.).

The acid-base and optical properties of Chromazurol S and Eriochromazurol B in the presence of 1 . 10-6 - 2 . 10-2M solutions of cetylpyridinium bromide, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and 1-ethoxycarbonylpentadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (Septonex) and 0.001-1.0% w/v solutions of octylphenolpolyethylene glycol ether (Triton X-100), polyoxyethylenemonolauryl ether (Brij 35) and lauryl sulphate sodium salt were determined by graphical and numerical interpretation of absorbance curves. The poorly soluble ion associates, which can be extracted into chloroform and which have the defined composition [LH4-nn-.n T+] or [LH3-nn-.n T+] are formed at submicellar concentration of the tenside. In regions close to the critical micellar concentration of the tenside, soluble binary complexes of the acid-base forms of the reagent are formed with tenside micelles. The conditional stability constants of the reagent acid-base equilibrium depend on the type and concentration of the tenside, on the reagent concentration, on the concentration and type of inorganic acid anions and on the ionic strength of the solution. The mechanism of interaction of the reagent with the tenside and the probable structure of the binary species are discussed.

The effects of the non-ionic detergent Triton X-100 on 6-sulphation of two species of endogenous nascent proteochondroitin by a chick-embryo cartilage microsomal system was examined. Sulphation of the larger (Type I) species with adenosine 3′-phosphate 5′-phosphosulphate was slightly diminished when Triton X-100 was present, whereas sulphation of the smaller (Type II) species was slightly enhanced. An ordered rather than random pattern of sulphation was obtained for the smaller proteoglycan, but with a considerably lower degree of sulphation than that of the larger proteochondroitin. These differences were consistent with other differences between these two species as described previously. Sulphation of exogenous [14C]chondroitin and exogenous proteo[3H]chondroitin by the microsomal system with Triton X-100 present produced ordered rather than random sulphation patterns. When a 100,000 g supernatant fraction was utilized for sulphation of [14C]chondroitin or proteo[3H]chondroitin, Triton X-100 was not needed, and ordered sulphation was still obtained. When hexasaccharide was used, sulphation of multiple N-acetylgalactosamine residues of the individual hexasaccharides resulted. This was relatively independent of Triton X-100 or the concentration of the hexasaccharide acceptors. With soluble enzyme, sulphation of multiple N-acetylgalactosamine residues on the individual hexasaccharide molecules was even greater, so that tri-sulphated products were found. This suggests that ordered rather than random sulphation of chondroitin with these enzyme preparations is due to enzyme-substrate interaction rather than to membrane organization.

The uncertainty which still surrounds the origin of a phenomenon so familiar as the yellow coloration of the urine bears eloquent testimony to the difficulties which beset the investigation, by ordinary chemical methods, of such substances as the urinary pigments, and to the importance of the part which the spectroscope has played in the acquisition of such knowledge of them as we possess. Indeed, our acquaintance with the individual pigments is proportional to the distinctive character of their absorption spectra, rather than to the time which has elapsed since they first attracted attention; and in not a few modern works doubt is thrown upon the very existence of a distinct yellow pigment, having negative spectroscopic properties, but to which normal urine owes its characteristic tint, the chief part in the coloration of the excretion being assigned to urobilin.

This paper describes an experimental study of heat transfer in a reciprocating planar curved tube that simulates a cooling passage in piston. The coupled inertial, centrifugal, and reciprocating forces in the reciprocating curved tube interact with buoyancy to exhibit a synergistic effect on heat transfer. For the present experimental conditions, the local Nusselt numbers in the reciprocating curved tube are in the range of 0.6–1.15 times of static tube levels. Without buoyancy interaction, the coupled reciprocating and centrifugal force effect causes the heat transfer to be initially reduced from the static level but recovered when the reciprocating force is further increased. Heat transfer improvement and impediment could be superimposed by the location-dependent buoyancy effect. The empirical heat transfer correlation has been developed to permit the evaluation of the individual and interactive effects of inertial, centrifugal, and reciprocating forces with and without buoyancy interaction on local heat transfer in a reciprocating planar curved tube.

A number of recent reports have described murine monoclonal antibodies that react specifically with the complex formed by human platelet membrane glycoproteins (GP) IIb and IIIa. We show that the IgG L, a previously described human alloantibody isolated from a polytransfused thrombasthenia patient, has similar properties. When used in non- precipitating amounts in crossed immunoelectrophoresis (CIE), 125I-IgG L bound strongly to the IIb-IIIa complex. However, after dissociation of the complex with EDTA, only a weak binding to GP IIb and no binding to GP IIIa was detected. In further studies, increased amounts of IgG L were interacted with 125I-labeled membrane glycoproteins in (a) CIE and (b) classical indirect immunoprecipitation experiments. Although the antibody was able to quantitatively precipitate the IIb-IIIa complex from Triton X-100-soluble extracts of platelet membranes, no precipitation of GP IIb or GP IIIa was observed after divalent cation chelation. Addition of EDTA to immunoprecipitates containing GP IIb- IIIa resulted in dissociation and partial release of both glycoproteins. The interaction of the IgG L with electrophoretically separated GP IIb and GP IIIa was studied using a Western blot procedure in the presence of Ca2+, Mg2+, or EDTA. The presence of divalent cations did not increase the reactivity of the antibody with the individual glycoproteins. Overall, our results show that acquired antibodies to IIb-IIIa, such as the IgG L, may predominantly react with complex-dependent determinants.

The aim of the present work is concerned with the effect of ?-irradiation on PM-355 with absorbed dose of (30-160Mrad) range. This polymer is evaluated spectrophotometrically for use as high dose dosimeters. The absorption spectra of irradiated samples showed radiation induced absorption changes. There is an increment in absorption proportional with absorbed dose. This increment is attributed to interfaces traps which, are formed by irradiation. Calibration curve was drawn .The linear relation was found in calibration curve, and dosimeter range was determined from the linear part. The linearity in response curve suggested that PM-355 could be used as dosimeter within (30-160Mrad) rang. Energy gap shift was used as a second tool to determine the dosimeter range. It was found that PM-355 energy gap systematically decreasing with absorbed dose, and it could be used as a second tool to determine the dosimeter range.
