AbstractThree potassium salts of organic acids, namely malate, citrate and tartrate, have been sprayed onto flue-cured blend tobacco and subsequently tested for their performance as burn additives in cigarettes. In one experiment where potassium malate was added to vary the final tobacco potassium from ca. 3.1% to 8.3% (wet weight), an almost linearly reduction in puff temperature was measured. This was accompanied by a gradual increase in the cigarette's pressure drop. In another set of experiments where the final tobacco potassium contents were increased to ca. 5.1%, the three potassium salts showed almost equal reduction in the mainstream nicotine-free-dry-particulate-matter (NFDPM) at 32-35%, nicotine at 25-32% and carbon monoxide at 24-35%. Puff number showed ca. 23% increase with malate, 13% with citrate and almost unchanged for tartrate. Evidence of melting and coating by potassium malate was discovered in cigarette ash by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This contributed to a noticeable change in ash morphology: small ash particles appeared to be coated and more tightly bonded together by the melt. This phenomenon was thought to be able to restrict the airflow during puffing, hence causing the measured increase in pressure drop, and the reductions in puff temperature, NFDPM, nicotine and carbon monoxide.

Proflavine binding of a sensitive strain of Bacillus subtilis and of a resistant strain derived from it was compared. Proflavine was bound very rapidly and more was bound at 0 °C than at 37 °C. Boiling increased the proflavine-binding capacity at 37 °C of sensitive but not of resistant cells. The binding capacity of sensitive and resistant cells suspended in buffer was the same; this was also true in various growth media. If cells were able to grow in the presence of proflavine their proflavine content decreased.Bound proflavine was released when cells were treated with growth media or with the salts of growth media. Sodium salts of organic acids also caused a release. This effect seemed due to their Na+ content, and was somewhat higher for resistant than for sensitive cells. The mechanism of proflavine resistance in B. subtilis is probably different from that of Escherichia coli, which is thought to depend on an energy-driven release of bound proflavine.

Abstract 1. Information received from rubber manufacturers on their experience of the effects of manganese and copper on aging is summarized. Although there is evidence that the amounts of these impurities in fillers tended to increase during the early war years (1939–42), it seems to be the general experience that little trouble arose from their effects on the properties of the rubber. Fillers containing as much as 0.05–0.10 per cent of manganese, or 0.005 per cent of copper, have not shown any obvious harmful effects. 2. Experiments with a large number of manganese compounds, including naturally occurring (mineral) forms and salts of organic acids, used in amounts equivalent to 0.01 per cent manganese on the raw rubber, have failed to show any pronounced harmful effect on the aging (oven or oxygen bomb) of a vulcanized natural rubber containing mercaptobenzothiazole, although deterioration was noticeably accelerated in some cases. Probably on account of the smallness of the effects observed, it is not possible as yet to draw any conclusion as to the relative activities of different types of manganese compound. 3. According to results of previous workers, manganese in the amount used in the present experiments can produce a more serious effect than these experiments indicate. The effect of manganese is known to depend on the type of mix used, and this aspect of the problem would thus appear to merit further investigation, as does also the influence of the method and degree of dispersion of the manganese compound in the rubber mix.

Effect of dietary supplementation of salts of organic acids on gut morphology and meat quality of broilers

The present investigation was conducted to appraise the effect of different levels of salts of organic acids on the gut morphology and meat quality of broilers. A total 300 day-old commercial chicks were randomly divided into 5 treatments. Each treatment consists of 6 replicates having 10 birds per replicate. The control diet was formulated to contain approximately the same metabolizable energy (ME), crude protein and limiting amino acids (methionine and lysine) as per the requirements of birds. The first group (T1) was fed on control diet without any feed additives, while, groups (T2, T3, T4 and T5) were fed on basal diets containing sodium butyrate and calcium propionate @ 0.5% and 1.0% respectively. Six birds from each treatment (1 per replication) were randomly selected for slaughter and collection of samples and microbial study at day 42. Performance of birds in terms of body weight and feed conversion ratio was significantly improved in treated groups. Results showed that in gut morphology, pH was reduced significantly (P less than 0.05) in T3 and T5 (6.24 and 6.22, respectively) as compared to the control group (6.64) while significant improvement was observed in villus height and crypt depth in all treatment groups and were highest in T3 (539.50µm,135.67 µm). Lowest Coliform bacteria (log CFU/g.)was recorded in T3 (16.57) which was significantly differ with the T1 (19.17) and Lactobacilli count was significantly increased in all treatments as compared to control.Supplementation of organic acids reduced meat cholesterol level significantly and lowest was in T5(48.03mg/dL) followed by T3 (48.30mg/dL). Similarly SFA decreased while PUFA content was increased significantly on supplementation of salts as compared to control.
