AbstractIn this paper, we designed an experiment to research the properties for the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) medium of perfluorocarbon-compounds (PFCs) and perfluoropolyether (PFPE), then we proposed that the selection principle of the high load capacity SBS medium can be used in the high peak power SBS system. The results showed that, for PFCs, perfluorinated hydrocarbons (FC-72) has the highest optical breakdown threshold (OBT); for PFPE, the medium with average molecular weight (AMW) less than 1000 has small medium absorption coefficient (AC) and high OBT, for AMW, greater than 1000, the medium AC becomes high and the OBT becomes low. Further research shows that, for PFPE series SBS medium, the AC increases and the OBT decreases gradually with increasing of AMW. We find some SBS mediums can work stably under high peak power pump, which lays a good foundation for the application of SBS technology in a high-power laser system.

An optoacoustic device consisting of a XeCl excimer laser and a measurement cell with an attached piezotransducer was used for detecting microparticles suspended in liquid probes. The potential of optoacoustic diagnostics of microinhomogeneous liquids was enhanced by applying informative parameters of optoacoustic response. Probes of distilled water and Dow Chemical latex suspension were used in experiments. It was shown that cavitation mechanism of optoacoustic conversion taking place at laser fluences below the optical breakdown threshold was well-suited for individual microparticle detection. The approach proposed is different from the well-known breakdown counting optoacoustic technique.

Abstract This work proposes a physically consistent numerical model to simulate ultrashort laser absorption by a metallic workpiece at the water-metal interface when optical breakdown of the dielectric occurs. The simulation couples the framework of the Finite-Difference Time-Domain method used in computational electromagnetics with the constitutive relation derived from both the model of direct ablation of metals and the first order model of water breakdown. The simulation is used to describe interface ablation processes such as Laser-Induced Plasma Micro-Machining. Applied to the water-aluminum interface, the model is able to describe the metal absorption and the dielectric breakdown threshold in three-dimensional geometry. It is an extensible monolithic approach in which the absorption by different materials can be described by simply changing the constitutive relations.
