Ordovician and Siluro-Lower Devonian magmatic rocks in the northern Appalachians south of the Iapetus suture are currently interpreted as distinct belts composed of multiple, small, peri-Gondwanan terranes that amalgamated during the sequential closures of Iapetus (latest Ordovician), the Tetagouche backarc basin (early Silurian), the Acadian seaway (Siluro-Devonian), and the Rheic Ocean (Devono-Carbonferous) (multiple terrane model). Here, the Siluro-Lower Devonian magmatic belts are shown to have slab failure affinities and together with the Ordovician arcs form paired belts parallel to the Iapetus suture, which suggests that they were emplaced along the common, peri-Avalonian margin during pre- and post-collisional processes. The Iapetan suture and the paired belts are inferred to repeat in Atlantic Canada due to dextral, strike-slip processes of mid-Late Devonian or younger age (terrane wreck model). In Newfoundland, the repetition is inferred to be the result of oblique, dextral offset of ca. 250 km. In the Quebec Embayment, the Iapetan paired magmatic belts are repeated twice in the limbs of a Z-shaped orocline related to oblique, dextral offsets of ca. 1200 km of the southern limb. Limited Siluro-Devonian paleomagnetic data indicate no paleolatitudinal differences across the Iapetus suture, however ca. 100° post-mid Silurian clockwise rotation is indicated for the middle fold limb; these data favour the terrane wreck model. The terrane wreck model results in a simple tectonic scenario of southerly subduction of Iapetus beneath a single ribbon continent (Avalonia sensu lato) that was subsequently deformed.

In Late Cretaceous times, subduction of oceanic crust occurred to the north of the Adria plate and was followed by the formation of ophiolitic complexes. Continental collision in Alpine orogenic belts lasted from Late Cretaceous to Early Tertiary times. The progressive contraction of oceanic crust caused the uplift of previously rifted continental margin and platforms and the formation of foredeep flysch basins. Detrital Cr-spinels are widespread in Eocene sandstones of the Brkini, Istrian and Krk Island foredeep flysch basins. On the basis of their TiO2 content and FeO/Fe2O3 ratio, spinels derived from peridotites and mantle-derived magmatic rocks were distinguished. The first are statistically more abundant and are considered to have been derived from type I and II peridotites. The second appear to be mainly related to backarc basin products. These results suggest that Cr-spinels were derived from the erosion of the Internal Dinarides, where type II and III peridotites are present, and also from the Outer Dinarides, where type I peridotites crop out.

Reading the clues embedded in extant clothing demands both imagination and patience since the subtle marks of wear, use and alteration may only become evident with extended observation and reflection. During the course of a project undertaken in conjunction with the bicentenary celebrations of John Ruskin's birth culminating in the exhibition of Sarah Casey's drawings in Ruskin's Good Looking! (8 February–7 April 2019), the authors studied the garments of John Ruskin at Brantwood, his former home in the Lake District. The life-sized drawings of these garments produced by Casey mapped the absent presence of the former wearer, allowed visitors the opportunity to better see and reflect on Ruskin's clothing, and also revealed the hidden histories of Ruskin's garments. Drawing, the making of marks with meaning, is not an obvious research tool in dress history and curatorial practice but, as this case study shows, can expose subtle details and reveal new insights.

Abstract Due to the lack of maintenance, abandoned cemeteries are often incorporated into the landscape. In many cases the information about the age of the cemetery is unavailable. To find out the approximate time of the formation of the cemetery the information recorded in the annual tree and shrub rings can be used. One of the most common tree species, planted for ornamental and symbolic purposes on the cemeteries, are Thuja orientalis and Thuja occidentalis. Alien to the Polish flora, these species adapted well to the local habitat and climatic conditions. The paper presents an attempt to apply dendrochronological dating to determine the age of the abandoned cemeteries in the region of the Great Masurian Lakes, part of the Masurian Lake District (north-eastern Poland). The study included five abandoned cemeteries. In total, 15 cores were taken from the trees. After applying the standard dendrochronological method, local chronologies for the studied species were established. The research indicated that the oldest found specimens - over 70 yrs old - are Thuja occidentalis individuals growing at the Słabowo cemetery. At the other sites the specimens of both Thuja species date back to the 1960s and early 1970s. Compared to the historical information regarding the age and origin of the studied objects, thujas growing there are much younger than the age of the cemeteries foundation. The presented method proved to be very helpful in understanding the time of Thuja occidentalis and Thuja orientalis introduction at the investigated cemeteries.
