Phytochemical investigations of fresh leaves and stem bark of Plumeria obtusa Linn. have led to the isolation and characterization of a new iridoid, p-methoxy- E-cinnamoyloxy plumieride (1), to which the trivial name champalinin has been assigned, and a triterpene lactone, 3β-hydroxy-urs-12-one-13β,28-olide (2). This is the first report of compound 2 as a natural product, although it has been reported earlier as a synthetic compound. Identification of these compounds was achieved through spectroscopic studies and chemical transformations.

Three compouds, (+)-butyrolactone IV (1), butyrolactone I (2) and terrelactone A (3) were isolated from the fungus Aspergillus terreus associated with Apostichopus japonicus from the Yellow Sea in China; their structures were elucidated by spectral methods. Compounds 1 and 2 were shown to have moderate antiangiogenesis activity when tested using the zebrafish assay. This is the first report of butyrolactones with antiangiogenesis activity.

The genus Dialium belongs to the Caesalpinioideae family, consisting of approximately 30 species distributed in the tropical regions. Secondary metabolites from the  Dialium genus have been reported to exhibit various biological activities including antioxidant, cytotoxicity and antimicrobial activities. This work describes the isolation and characterization of five compounds from the leaves of Dialium cochinchinense Pierre. Their structures were established by spectroscopic analysis, including MS and NMR spectra. Accordingly, the isolated compounds were identified to be lupeone (1), b-sitostenone (2), β-sitosterol (3), daucosterol (4), and dihydrokaempferide (5). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of the isolation of compounds 1 and 5 from the genus Dialium.

Background and Objectives: In recent decades, enterococcal resistance to antimicrobials has greatly increased. Further- more, these chemicals include several side effects on the patients. Since no reports are available of the bacteriophages' effects on eukaryotic cells, they can be good solutions for multidrug-resistant bacterial problems. Therefore, the major aim of this study was to isolate bacteriophages from wastewaters on clinical antibiotic-resistant enterococci. Materials and Methods: Clinical bacteria were isolated, then enterococcal isolates were identified using different methods. The antibiotic resistance scheme of the enterococcal isolates was assessed. The bacterial isolates were exposed to wastewa- ter samples containing potential bacteriophages. Technically, isolated bacteriophages were studied by electron microscopy. Results: Isolated bacteria were verified as Enterococcus faecium. Results showed that bacteriophages could easily be isolat- ed from wastewater sources. The isolated bacteriophages were effective on E. faecium as well as Streptococcus dysgalactiae. Furthermore, these bacteriophages were challenged with five other bacteria (ATCC) with no visible effects. In general, the isolated bacteriophages belonged to the Myoviridae, Siphoviridae, and Inoviridae families. Conclusion: Further studies on bacteriophages and their efficacy on enterococcal strains could increase the treatment possi- bility of enterococcal infections. Due to these bacteriophages' effects on Streptococcus strains, bacteriophages may be used to treat streptococcal infections as well.
