Para Argentina se citan tres especies de Ceiba (Malvaceae, Bombacoideae): C. chodatii, C. speciosa y C. pubiflora, diferenciadas por pocos caracteres. Las dos primeras especies se distinguen claramente en etapa de floración, siendo complicada su identificación en otros estadios. El objetivo de esta investigación es revisar comparativamente a C. chodatii y C. speciosa en la búsqueda de mayores caracteres que aporten a su delimitación. Se estudiaron ejemplares nativos de C. chodatii en la Selva pedemontana y en Chaco serrano, también de C. speciosa cultivados en Salta y provenientes de herbarios. Se estudiaron todos los caracteres vegetativos y reproductivos, con lupa binocular y MEB. Se realizó un ensayo de germinación y desarrollo de plántulas. Los resultados muestran que las hojas desde plántula hasta adulto se diferencian en nerviación y aserrado del margen. Los caracteres diferenciales en flor son: el tamaño de los lóbulos en la columna de estaminodios y la pubescencia, el tamaño de las anteras y collar, la concrescencia total o parcial de los filamentos estaminales, la forma, tamaño y pubescencia del estigma y el tipo de pubescencia basal del estilo. Los frutos se diferencian por el espesor de las valvas y las semillas por pubescencia.

In subtropical regions like the Chaco Serrano (33° S), rainfall has a marked seasonality, and water flood, caused by heavy rains, may have important consequences for dependent ecosystems. Conversely, the high pressure on available resources during dry periods can also affect the fauna diversity and distribution. Even though birds have shown to be excellent ecological indicators of these shifts in the environment, currently little is known about the avifauna of the Argentine Chaco Serrano phytogeographic district. Our aim was to study the resident bird population status in the Southern Chaco Serrano, its fluctuations in richness and abundance, and its relationship to seasonal variations, in monthly and annual hydroperiods. In order to assess the resident bird status over a two year period (2011 Mar.-2013 Feb.) we carried out 18 sampling surveys during pre-breeding (spring), breeding (summer) and non breeding periods (autumn-winter), in the Northeastern part of the Valle Fértil Natural Park, San Juan province, Argentina. During each site survey, we recorded bird assemblages found in six transects, and obtained bird abundance and species diversity. A mixed general linear model was employed to evaluate relationships between the studied variables. We found a total of 98 species of birds belonging to 33 families (44 resident species, 23 spring visitors, six summer visitors, two winter visitors and 23 with scarce registers). We also registered 68 of these species in both hydroperiods, 28 only during rainy periods and only two during the dry period. Both richness and abundance showed the highest values during the pre-breeding and rainy seasons, while different tendencies were detected during the isolated monthly rainfalls. These changes in bird densities were associated with the arrival of migratory species, mainly spring visitors, and probably in relationship with their reproductive activity, and to seasonal fluctuations in food resources. The Southern Chaco Serrano is a subtropical semiarid place that seems to be an important breeding habitat for many migrant bird species, which in turn promoted seasonal changes in species density and diversity, mainly during rainy years. This work contributed to our understanding on the causes of richness and abundance variations on birds, and will contribute to this important group management and conservation in this area.

El objetivo del presente trabajo fue estudiar la epidemiología de los nematodes gastrointestinales (NGI) en la recría bovina en la región del Chaco Serrano del Noroeste Argentino durante los períodos mayo-sept. 2014 y mayo-marzo 2015-16. En cada período se formaron tres grupos de 17 terneras de destete: GTS con tratamiento cada 45-50 días con moxidectina, GTL con 1 solo tratamiento: 6/2014 ivermectina y 7/2015 doramectina y GST sin tratamiento. Se realizaron conteos de huevos (hpg) y coprocultivos y se registró la ganancia de peso vivo (GPV). Al inicio en ambos períodos los hpg fueron moderados (=515±449, 2014; =484±464, 2015) elevándose hacia fines del otoño, para luego descender hacia la primavera. Los hpg del GTL mostraron postratamiento solo un descenso parcial y el GTS siempre tuvo valores de hpg muy bajos.  Los géneros de nematodes predominantes fueron Cooperia (41,8%), y Haemonchus (53,7%). En ambos períodos el efecto de los tratamientos se evidenció desde el invierno, mostrando el GTS una mayor GPV (p<0,05) que la de los otros dos grupos cuando se mejoró la oferta alimenticia. Las GPV totales del GTS fueron mayores. Al final del ensayo, los promedios en la GPV fueron en kg de 11,2, 11,5 y 19,6 (2014) y de 54,3, 56,5 y 73,4 (2015-16) respectivamente para el GST, GTL y el GTS.

We report the first record of the genus Cavia and the species Cavia tschudii (Rodentia, Caviidae) in Catamarca province, northwestern Argentina, which represents a range extension of about 110 km southward for the species. The cranial and dental remains were recovered from an owl pellet sample found in eastern slopes of the Ambato range, at 1600 m elevation, in a highland grasslands-Chaco Serrano ecotone. According to the environmental continuity along the Ambato range, we suggest that the presence of C. tschudii in southernmost Catamarca and northern La Rioja province is likely.
