Background: Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) is a monomer with silicon structure and an internal nanometric cage. Objective: The purpose of this study was to provide an injectable hydrogel that could be easily located in open or closed bone fractures and injuries, and also to reduce the possible risks of infections caused by bone graft either as an allograft or an autograft. Methods: Various formulations of temperature sensitive hydrogels containing hydroxyapatite, Gelrite, POSS and platelets rich plasma (PRP), such as the co-gelling agent and cell growth enhancer, were prepared. The hydrogels were characterized for their injectability, gelation time, phase transition temperature and viscosity. Other physical properties of the optimized formulation including compressive stress, compressive strain and Young’s modulus as mechanical properties, as well as storage and loss modulus, swelling ratio, biodegradation behavior and cell toxicity as rheometrical parameters were studied on human osteoblast MG-63 cells. Alizarin red tests were conducted to study the qualitative and quantitative osteogenic capability of the designed scaffold, and the cell adhesion to the scaffold was visualized by scanning electron microscopy. Results: The results demonstrated that the hydrogel scaffold mechanical force and injectability were 3.34±0.44 Mpa and 12.57 N, respectively. Moreover, the scaffold showed higher calcium granules production in alizarin red staining compared to the control group. The proliferation of the cells in G4.5H1P0.03PRP10 formulation was significantly higher than in other formulations (p<0.05). Conclusion: The optimized Gelrite/Hydroxyapatite/POSS/PRP hydrogel scaffold has useful impacts on osteoblasts activity, and may be beneficial for local drug delivery in complications including a break or bone loss.

Abstract Background After successful cardiopulmonary resuscitation with return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC), many patients show signs of an overactive immune activation. Monocytes are a heterogenous cell population that can be distinguished into three subsets. Purpose The aim of this prospective, observational study was to analyze whether monocyte subset distribution is associated with mortality at 6 months in patients after cardiac arrest. Methods We included 53 patients admitted to our medical ICU after cardiac arrest. Blood was taken on admission and monocyte subset distribution was analyzed by flow cytometry and distinguished into classical monocytes (CM; CD14++CD16-), intermediate monocytes (IM; CD14++CD16+CCR2+) and non-classical monocytes (NCM; CD14+CD16++CCR2-). Results Median age was 64.5 (IQR 49.8–74.3) years and 75.5% of patients were male. Mortality at 6 months was 50.9% and survival with good neurological outcome was 37.7%. Of interest, monocyte subset distribution upon admission to the ICU did not differ according to survival. However, patients that died within 6 months showed a strong increase in the pro-inflammatory subset of intermediate monocytes (8.3% (3.8–14.6)% vs. 4.1% (1.5–8.2)%; p=0.025), and a decrease of classical monocytes (87.5% (79.9–89.0)% vs. 90.8% (85.9–92.7)%; p=0.036) 72 hours after admission. In addition, intermediate monocytes were predictive of outcome independent of initial rhythm and time to ROSC and correlated with the CPC-score at 6 months (R=0.32; p=0.043). Discussion Monocyte subset distribution is associated with outcome in patients surviving a cardiac arrest. This suggests that activation of the innate immune system may play a significant role in patient outcome after cardiac arrest. The macroscopic mechanical behavior of open-porous cellular materials is dictated by the geometric and material properties of their microscopic cell walls. The overall compressive response of such materials is divided into three regimes, namely, the linear elastic, plateau and densification. In this paper, a constitutive model is presented, which captures not only the linear elastic regime and the subsequent pore-collapse, but is also shown to be capable of capturing the hardening upon the densification of the network. Here, the network is considered to be made up of idealized square-shaped cells, whose cell walls undergo bending and buckling under compression. Depending on the choice of damage criterion, viz. elastic buckling or irreversible bending, the cell walls collapse. These collapsed cells are then assumed to behave as nonlinear springs, acting as a foundation to the elastic network of active open cells. To this end, the network is decomposed into an active network and a collapsed one. The compressive strain at the onset of densification is then shown to be quantified by the point of intersection of the two network stress-strain curves. A parameter sensitivity analysis is presented to demonstrate the range of different material characteristics that the model is capable of capturing. The proposed constitutive model is further validated against two different types of nanoporous materials and shows good agreement.

Owing to their low lattice thermal conductivity, many compounds of the n(PbTe)-m(Bi2Te3) homologous series have been reported in the literature with thermoelectric (TE) properties that still need improvement. For this purpose, in this work, we have implemented the band engineering approach by applying biaxial tensile and compressive strains using the density functional theory (DFT) on various compounds of this series, namely Bi2Te3, PbBi2Te4, PbBi4Te7 and Pb2Bi2Te5. All the fully relaxed Bi2Te3, PbBi2Te4, PbBi4Te7 and Pb2Bi2Te5 compounds are narrow band-gap semiconductors. When applying strains, a semiconductor-to-metal transition occurs for all the compounds. Within the range of open-gap, the electrical conductivity decreases as the compressive strain increases. We also found that compressive strains cause larger Seebeck coefficients than tensile ones, with the maximum Seebeck coefficient being located at −2%, −6%, −3% and 0% strain for p-type Bi2Te3, PbBi2Te4, PbBi4Te7 and Pb2Bi2Te5, respectively. The use of the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) as a complementary tool has shown that the van der Waals interactions located between the structure slabs evolve with strains as well as the topological properties of Bi2Te3 and PbBi2Te4. This study shows that the TE performance of the n(PbTe)-m(Bi2Te3) compounds is modified under strains.

The possibilities of using optical spectroscopy methods in the differential diagnosis of prostate cancer were investigated. Analytical discrimination models of Raman spectra of prostate tissue were constructed by using the projections onto latent structures data analysis(PLS-DA) method for different wavelengths of exciting radiation—532 and 785 nm. These models allowed us to divide the Raman spectra of prostate cancer and the spectra of hyperplasia sites for validation datasets with the accuracy of 70–80%, depending on the specificity value. Meanwhile, for the calibration datasets, the accuracy values reached 100% for the excitation of a laser with a wavelength of 785 nm. Due to the registration of Raman “fingerprints”, the main features of cellular metabolism occurring in the tissue of a malignant prostate tumor were confirmed, namely the absence of aerobic glycolysis, over-expression of markers (FASN, SREBP1, stearoyl-CoA desaturase, etc.), and a strong increase in the concentration of cholesterol and its esters, as well as fatty acids and glutamic acid. The presence of an ensemble of Raman peaks with increased intensity, inherent in fatty acid, beta-glucose, glutamic acid, and cholesterol, is a fundamental factor for the identification of prostate cancer.

AbstractPolycrystalline Ge thin films have attracted increasing attention because their hole mobilities exceed those of single-crystal Si wafers, while the process temperature is low. In this study, we investigate the strain effects on the crystal and electrical properties of polycrystalline Ge layers formed by solid-phase crystallization at 375 °C by modulating the substrate material. The strain of the Ge layers is in the range of approximately 0.5% (tensile) to -0.5% (compressive), which reflects both thermal expansion difference between Ge and substrate and phase transition of Ge from amorphous to crystalline. For both tensile and compressive strains, a large strain provides large crystal grains with sizes of approximately 10 μm owing to growth promotion. The potential barrier height of the grain boundary strongly depends on the strain and its direction. It is increased by tensile strain and decreased by compressive strain. These findings will be useful for the design of Ge-based thin-film devices on various materials for Internet-of-things technologies.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the turbidity generated during the Fenton photo-reaction applied to the oxidation of waters containing carbamazepine as a function of factors such as pH, H2O2 concentration and catalyst dosage. The results let establish the degradation pathways and the main decomposition byproducts. It is found that the pH affects the turbidity of the water. Working between pH = 2.0 and 2.5, the turbidity is under 1 NTU due to the fact that iron, added as a catalyst, is in the form of a ferrous ion. Operating at pH values above 3.0, the iron species in their oxidized state (mainly ferric hydroxide in suspension) would cause turbidity. The contribution of these ferric species is a function of the concentration of iron added to the process, verifying that the turbidity increases linearly according to a ratio of 0.616 NTU L/mg Fe. Performing with oxidant concentrations at (H2O2) = 2.0 mM, the turbidity undergoes a strong increase until reaching values around 98 NTU in the steady state. High turbidity levels can be originated by the formation of coordination complexes, consisting of the union of three molecules containing substituted carboxylic groups (BaQD), which act as ligands towards an iron atom with Fe3+ oxidation state.
