The University of Mississippi Library has digitized the Accounting Historians Journal from 1974 through 1992, cover-to-cover. The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants' gift of their library to the University of Mississippi was, fortuitously, the impetus for the AHJ digitizing project. A complicated chain of events followed which included discussions with the Academy of Accounting Historians for copyright permission, an application for a federal grant, negotiations with software vendors, and decisions about search capabilities and display formats. Each article in AHJ is now full-text searchable with accompanying PDF page images.

The University of Mississippi Library created a profile to provide linking from Google Scholar (GS) to library resources in 2005. Although Google Scholar does not provide usage statistics for institutions, use of Google Scholar is clearly evident in looking at library link resolver logs. The purpose of this project is to examine users of Google Scholar with existing data from interlibrary loan transactions and library Web site click-through logs and analytics. Questions about user status and discipline, as well as behaviors related to use of other library resources, are explored.

Before online forums and social media groups allowed spaces for blues fans to share their love of the music, newsletters and periodicals created by blues societies and fans provided outlets for blues aficionados to connect with other fans, discographers, musicians and scholars through performance and album reviews, pilgrimage storytelling, descriptions of recent discoveries of rare sound recordings and much more. The University of Mississippi Blues Archive holds a large collection of blues periodicals, covering over 1000 unique titles, from over 25 countries, with a bulk date of 1963 to the present. Historically of interest to researchers of blues performance history, the collection also contains a wealth of insight to blues fandom and communities of music appreciation worldwide. This article explores pathways for examining blues fandom studies through the newsletter collection and highlights unique issues and perspectives found in the collection.

In this chapter, the author reflects on William Faulkner's influence on her and on other Southern writers. The author says it would be impossible to think of Oxford, Mississippi without thinking of Faulkner, its most famous citizen. She recalls growing up in Carrollton, but admits that it took her many long years in associating Oxford and the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) with Faulkner. It wasn't until she was in her early twenties and in graduate school at Vanderbilt that the author realized she must find out more about Faulkner. She began reading some of Faulkner's novels, including The Hamlet, Go Down, Moses and The Collected Stories. Critics inevitably compared her to Faulkner because of resemblances between their works. The author also reflects on three unanswered questions about Faulkner's work: his nihilism, his treatment of women characters, and the fictional Snopes family in his novels.

Debabrata Maiti of the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay found (Chem. Commun. 2012, 48, 4253) that the relatively inexpensive Pd(OAc)2 effectively catalyzed the decarbonylation of an aldehyde 1 to the hydrocarbon 2. Hui Lou of Zhejiang University used (Adv. Synth. Catal. 2011, 353, 2577) a Mo catalyst to effect reduction of the ester 3 to the hydrocarbon 4, with retention of all the skeletal carbons. Jon T. Njardarson of the University of Arizona showed (Chem. Commun. 2012, 48, 7844) that the allylic ether 5 could be reduced with high regioselectivity to give 6. José Barluenga and Carlos Valdés of the Universidad de Oviedo effected (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2012, 51, 5950) the direct conversion of a ketone 7 to the azide 8. Although no cyclic ketones were included in the examples, there is a good chance that this will be the long-sought diastereoselective reduction of a cyclohexanone to the equatorial amine. Hideo Nagashima of Kyushu University reduced (Chem. Lett. 2012, 41, 229) the acid 9 directly to the aldehyde 1 using a ruthenium catalyst with the bis silane 10. Georgii I. Nikonov of Brock University described (Adv. Synth. Catal. 2012, 354, 607) a similar Ru-mediated silane reduction of an acid chloride to the aldehyde. Professor Nagashima used (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2012, 51, 5363) his same Ru catalyst to reduce the ester 11 to the protected amine 12. Shmaryahu Hoz of Bar-Ilan University used (J. Org. Chem. 2012, 77, 4029) photostimulation to promote the SmI2-mediated reduction of a nitrile 13 to the amine 14. Bakthan Singaram of the University of California, Santa Cruz effected (J. Org. Chem. 2012, 77, 221) the same transformation with InCl3/NaBH4. David J. Procter of the University of Manchester described (J. Org. Chem. 2012, 77, 3049) what promises to be a general method for activating Sm metal to form SmI2. Mark T. Hamann of the University of Mississippi directly reduced (J. Org. Chem. 2012, 77, 4578) the nitro group of 15 to the alkylated amine 16. Cleanly oxidizing aromatic methyl groups to the level of the aldehyde without overoxidation has been a challenge.

15 Years of Experience with Renal Replacement Therapy in Patients Starting Therapy before Age 20

This study retrospectively evaluates the survival on renal replacement therapy among patients starting dialysis before their twentieth birthday. The cohort included all patients starting therapy from 1972 through August, 1987 at the University of Mississippi or Kidney Care, Inc. Fifty-five patients, median age 17 years, range 5-19 years, underwent 335 patient years of therapy. Nineteen initially received CAPD; 12 home hemodialysis, 2 were transplanted prior to dialysis, and the remaining 22 patients were entered into dialysis in a free standing facility. Thirty-one patients received a cadaveric transplant and four patients received a living related transplant. The median transplant survival was 1360 days. There were 10 patients on renal replacement therapy over 10 years and a survival plot projected a 70% survival at 10 years. Nine patients died. Three percent of the time on renal replacement therapy was spent hospitalized. Although the hospitalization rate is significant, the pediatric patient may be expected to have a long survival on renal replacement therapy.
