A simple two-phase conceptual model is postulated to explain the initial growth of microbubbles after pressure release in dissolved air flotation. During the first phase bubbles merely expand from existing nucleation centres as air precipitates from solution, without bubble coalescence. This phase ends when all excess air is transferred to the gas phase. During the second phase, the total air volume remains the same, but bubbles continue to grow due to bubble coalescence. This model is used to explain the results from experiments where three different nozzle variations were tested, namely a nozzle with an impinging surface immediately outside the nozzle orifice, a nozzle with a bend in the nozzle channel, and a nozzle with a tapering outlet immediately outside the nozzle orifice. From these experiments, it is inferred that the first phase of bubble growth is completed at approximately 1.7 ms after the start of pressure release.

Background: A compact complex impedance-transforming balun for UHF frequencies, which is based on a coupled-line structure that matched all ports and provided high output port isolation, was designed in this paper. Methods: A lumped component transformation was used to minimize circuit size. The implemented circuit operated at 433 MHz with the reflection coefficients less than -16 dB at all ports, 0.22 dB amplitude balance and 180° phase balance at the output ports. The signal coupling between the output ports was -16.8 dB. The circuit size is small at 0.032λ. Results: Complex impedance-transforming baluns were designed to operate at 433 MHz. The source impedance at port 1 was set at Zs = 12 - j12Ω and the load impedances at port 2 and 3 were set at ZL = 80 + j30Ω. Conclusion: A compact complex impedance-transforming balun at UHF frequency, with all ports matched and high isolations, was designed and illustrated in this paper.

The microwave properties of a composite material containing flakes of finemet-type nanocrystalline alloy placed in the epoxy matrix have been investigated. Two compositions have been studied: with 15% and 30% flakes. Frequency dependences of transmission and reflection coefficients are measured in the frequency range from 12 to 38 GHz. The dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability are obtained, and the microwave losses are calculated. The dependences of transmission and reflection coefficients have been drawn as functions of wave frequency and thickness of the composite material, taking into account the frequency dependences of permittivity and permeability. The regions of maximal and minimal microwave absorption have been defined. The influence of wave interference on the frequency dependence of microwave absorption is studied.

AbstractThe article describes the establishment of the location of agate geodes using the GPR method in the area of the Simota gully (Lesser Poland Voivodeship). Agates (a multicolored variety of gemstone of chalcedony group) have multifaceted values that informed their study. Traditional methods of geode location are less reliable, hence the attempt to use the GPR method. Measurements were taken at two study test sites with subsurface geology of weathered melaphyre and pyroclastic deposits using a GPR system (ProEx). A high-frequency antenna (1.6 GHz) was used along with the pre-established profiles of lengths of 6-m and 10-cm intervals. Furthermore, simple soil tests using the soil sampler tool were made prior to the GPR measurement. The GPR results show significant high attenuation of the electromagnetic energy interpreted to be due to clay components of the regolith. Advanced signal processing procedures (such as the attribute of the signal) were used on the data for better enhancement that aided interpretation. Other anomalies depicted on the radargrams were thought to be the presence of roots, pieces of melaphyres-targeted agates. Furtherance to ascertain the reflection coefficients as recorded on the GPR data, in situ samples (root pieces, melaphyres, agates) taken were tested in the laboratory for electric permittivity property. Based on the interpretation results, several agate geodes were dug out from the ground.
