The development of flexible, viscoelastic materials for consumer 3D printers has provided the opportunity for a wide range of devices with damping behavior such as tuned vibration isolators to be innovatively developed and inexpensively manufactured. However, there is currently little information available about the dynamic behavior of these 3D printed materials necessary for modeling of dynamic behavior prior to print. In order to fully utilize these promising materials, a deeper understanding of the material properties, and the subsequent dynamic behavior is critical. This study evaluates the use of three different types of models: transient response, frequency response and hysteretic response to predict the dynamic behavior of viscoelastic 3D printed materials based on static and dynamic material properties. Models of viscoelastic materials are presented and verified experimentally using two 3D printable materials and two traditional viscoelastic materials. The experimental response of each of the materials shows agreement with the modeled behavior, and underscores the need for improved characterization of the dynamic properties of viscoelastic 3D printable materials.

In vibration insulation projects, a parameter affecting the dynamic properties of the viscoelastic materials is the previous static load acting on the supports, denominated here as the ‘preload’. Most of the currently-used methodologies obtain the dynamic properties by considering only the effects of temperature and frequency. The additional effect of preload can be added to the usual methodologies by employing the hyperelastic theory developed by Mooney–Rivlin. The current work proposes an integrated approach to characterize thermorheologically simple viscoelastic materials, including the preload effect along with the influence of temperature and frequency. The proposed method uses a hybrid optimization process, combining a genetic algorithm (GA) and a non-linear optimization technique—named ‘simplex’—in an inverse problem structure applied to all experimental data at hand. A set of samples of elastomer BT-806 55 (butyl rubber) was tested at various temperatures, frequencies, and preloads. The comparison between the results of the present methodology and traditional approaches to a variation in the dynamic properties at all frequencies and temperatures for a constant vibration amplitude. The present results prove that the proposed methodology is a viable alternative to represent the dynamic properties of materials used in vibration isolation.

Abstract Structural characterization of chromatin is challenging due to conformational and compositional heterogeneity in vivo and dynamic properties that limit achievable resolution in vitro. Although the maximum resolution for solving structures of large macromolecular assemblies by electron microscopy has recently undergone profound increases, X-ray crystallographic approaches may still offer advantages for certain systems. One such system is compact chromatin, wherein the crystalline state recapitulates the crowded molecular environment within the nucleus. Here we show that nucleosomal constructs with cohesive-ended DNA can be designed that assemble into different types of circular configurations or continuous fibers extending throughout crystals. We demonstrate the utility of the method for characterizing nucleosome compaction and linker histone binding at near-atomic resolution but also advance its application for tackling further problems in chromatin structural biology and for generating novel types of DNA nanostructures. We provide a library of cohesive-ended DNA fragment expression constructs and a strategy for engineering DNA-based nanomaterials with a seemingly vast potential variety of architectures and histone chemistries.

Solid-state NMR spectroscopy is an established experimental technique which is used for the characterization of structural and dynamic properties of materials in their native state. Many types of solid-state NMR experiments have been used to characterize both lithium-based and sodium-based solid polymer and polymer–ceramic hybrid electrolyte materials. This review describes several solid-state NMR experiments that are commonly employed in the analysis of these systems: pulse field gradient NMR, electrophoretic NMR, variable temperature T1 relaxation, T2 relaxation and linewidth analysis, exchange spectroscopy, cross polarization, Rotational Echo Double Resonance, and isotope enrichment. In this review, each technique is introduced with a short description of the pulse sequence, and examples of experiments that have been performed in real solid-state polymer and/or hybrid electrolyte systems are provided. The results and conclusions of these experiments are discussed to inform readers of the strengths and weaknesses of each technique when applied to polymer and hybrid electrolyte systems. It is anticipated that this review may be used to aid in the selection of solid-state NMR experiments for the analysis of these systems.

Abstract. We have developed a tow test setup for the reproducible measurement of the dynamic properties of different types of tethered membrane wings. The test procedure is based on repeatable automated maneuvers with the entire kite system under realistic conditions. By measuring line forces and line angles, we determine the aerodynamic coefficients and lift-to-drag ratio as functions of the length ratio between power and steering lines. This nondimensional parameter characterizes the angle of attack of the wing and is varied automatically by the control unit on the towed test bench. During each towing run, several test cycles are executed such that mean values can be determined and errors can be minimized. We can conclude from this study that an objective measurement of specific dynamic properties of highly flexible membrane wings is feasible. The presented tow test method is suitable for quantitatively assessing and comparing different wing designs. The method represents an essential milestone for the development and characterization of tethered membrane wings as well as for the validation and improvement of simulation models. On the basis of this work, more complex maneuvers and a full degree of automation can be implemented in subsequent work. It can also be used for aerodynamic parameter identification.

The Impact

Whether serving as mounts, isolators, or dampers, elastomer-based supports are common solutions to inhibit the transmission of waves and vibrations through engineered systems and therefore help to alleviate concerns of radiated noise from structural surfaces. The static and dynamic properties of elastomers govern the operational conditions over which the elastomers and host structures provide effective performance. Passive-adaptive tuning of properties can therefore broaden the useful working range of the material, making the system more robust to varying excitations and loads. While elastomer-based metamaterials are shown to adapt properties by many orders of magnitude according to the collapse of internal void architectures, researchers have not elucidated means to control these instability mechanisms such that they may be leveraged for on-demand tuning of static and dynamic properties. In addition, while magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) exhibit valuable performance-tuning control due to their intrinsic magnetic-elastic coupling, particularly with anisotropic magnetic particle alignment, the extent of their properties adaptation is not substantial when compared to metamaterials. Past studies have not identified means to apply anisotropic MREs in engineered metamaterials to activate the collapse mechanisms for tuning purposes. To address this limited understanding and effect significant performance adaptation in elastomer supports for structural vibration and noise control applications, this research explores a new concept for magnetoelastic metamaterials (MM) that leverage strategic magnetic particle alignment for unprecedented tunability of performance and functionality using non-contact actuation. MM specimens are fabricated using interrelated internal void topologies, with and without anisotropic MRE materials. Experimental characterization of stiffness, hysteretic loss, and dynamic force transmissibility assess the impact of the design variables upon performance metrics. For example, it is discovered that the mechanical properties may undergo significant adaptation, including two orders of magnitude change in mechanical power transmitted through an MM, according to the introduction of a 3 T free space external magnetic field. In addition, the variable collapse of the internal architectures is seen to tune static stiffness from finite to nearly vanishing values, while the dynamic stiffness shows as much as 50% change due to the collapsing architecture topology. Thus, strategically harnessing the internal architecture alongside magnetoelastic coupling is found to introduce a versatile means to tune the properties of the MM to achieve desired system performance across a broad range of working conditions. These results verify the research hypothesis and indicate that, when effectively leveraged, magnetoelastic metamaterials introduce remarkably versatile performance for engineering applications of vibration and noise control.
