We study the resonant interaction of particles with a monochromatic wave in an inhomogeneous plasma. The effects of the inhomogeneity are represented by a variable phase velocity of the wave. This introduces, in the wave frame, an inertial force due to the non-Galilean transformation of co-ordinates. Asymptotic expressions are obtained for the spatial damping coefficient of the wave in two physically different cases.(i) When the inertial force is greater than the force due to the trapping (strong inhomogeneity case) instead of the null asymptotic behaviour that one obtains in the homogeneous case, the spatial nonlinear damping coefficient behaves asymptotically like the linear Landau damping coefficient.(ii) When the inertial force is lower than the trapping force (weakinhomogeneity case), the spatial nonlinear damping coefficient for short distances is proportional to the ratio of the inertial force to the trapping force. For long distances, this coefficient is proportional to the square of the preceding ratio multiplied by the number of trapping lengths. In both cases, the proportionality coefficient is the linear spatial Landau damping rate.

Generalized geometric nonlinear damping based on the viscous damper with a non-negative velocity exponent is proposed to improve the isolation performance of a quasi-zero stiffness (QZS) vibration isolator in this paper. Firstly, the generalized geometric nonlinear damping characteristic is derived. Then, the amplitude-frequency responses of the QZS vibration isolator under force and base excitations are obtained, respectively, using the averaging method. Parametric analysis of the force and displacement transmissibility is conducted subsequently. At last, two phenomena are explained from the viewpoint of the equivalent damping ratio. The results show that decreasing the velocity exponent of the horizontal damper is beneficial to reduce the force transmissibility in the resonant region. For the case of base excitation, it is beneficial to select a smaller velocity exponent only when the nonlinear damping ratio is relatively large.

Abstract We establish a practical method for the joint analysis of anisotropic galaxy two- and three-point correlation functions (2PCF and 3PCF) on the basis of the decomposition formalism of the 3PCF using tri-polar spherical harmonics. We perform such an analysis with MultiDark Patchy mock catalogues to demonstrate and understand the benefit of the anisotropic 3PCF. We focus on scales above 80 h−1 Mpc, and use information from the shape and the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) signals of the 2PCF and 3PCF. We also apply density field reconstruction to increase the signal-noise ratio of BAO in the 2PCF measurement, but not in the 3PCF measurement. In particular, we study in detail the constraints on the angular diameter distance and the Hubble parameter. We build a model of the bispectrum or 3PCF that includes the nonlinear damping of the BAO signal in redshift space. We carefully account for various uncertainties in our analysis including theoretical models of the 3PCF, window function corrections, biases in estimated parameters from the fiducial values, the number of mock realizations to estimate the covariance matrix, and bin size. The joint analysis of the 2PCF and 3PCF monopole and quadrupole components shows a $30\%$ and $20\%$ improvement in Hubble parameter constraints before and after reconstruction of the 2PCF measurements, respectively, compared to the 2PCF analysis alone. This study clearly shows that the anisotropic 3PCF increases cosmological information from galaxy surveys and encourages further development of the modeling of the 3PCF on smaller scales than we consider.

AbstractMechanical sources of nonlinear damping play a central role in modern physics, from solid-state physics to thermodynamics. The microscopic theory of mechanical dissipation suggests that nonlinear damping of a resonant mode can be strongly enhanced when it is coupled to a vibration mode that is close to twice its resonance frequency. To date, no experimental evidence of this enhancement has been realized. In this letter, we experimentally show that nanoresonators driven into parametric-direct internal resonance provide supporting evidence for the microscopic theory of nonlinear dissipation. By regulating the drive level, we tune the parametric resonance of a graphene nanodrum over a range of 40–70 MHz to reach successive two-to-one internal resonances, leading to a nearly two-fold increase of the nonlinear damping. Our study opens up a route towards utilizing modal interactions and parametric resonance to realize resonators with engineered nonlinear dissipation over wide frequency range.

AbstractThe widely cited Haken–Kelso–Bunz (HKB) model of motor coordination is used in an enormous range of applications. In this paper, we show analytically that the weakly damped, weakly coupled HKB model of two oscillators depends on only two dimensionless parameters; the ratio of the linear damping coefficient and the linear coupling coefficient and the ratio of the combined nonlinear damping coefficients and the combined nonlinear coupling coefficients. We illustrate our results with a mechanical analogue. We use our analytic results to predict behaviours in arbitrary parameter regimes and show how this led us to explain and extend recent numerical continuation results of the full HKB model. The key finding is that the HKB model contains a significant amount of behaviour in biologically relevant parameter regimes not yet observed in experiments or numerical simulations. This observation has implications for the development of virtual partner interaction and the human dynamic clamp, and potentially for the HKB model itself.
