Purpose The primary purpose of this study was to explore the audiovisual speech perception strategies.80.23.47 adopted by normal-hearing and deaf people in processing familiar and unfamiliar languages. Our primary hypothesis was that they would adopt different perception strategies due to different sensory experiences at an early age, limitations of the physical device, and the developmental gap of language, and others. Method Thirty normal-hearing adults and 33 prelingually deaf adults participated in the study. They were asked to perform judgment and listening tasks while watching videos of a Uygur–Mandarin bilingual speaker in a familiar language (Standard Chinese) or an unfamiliar language (Modern Uygur) while their eye movements were recorded by eye-tracking technology. Results Task had a slight influence on the distribution of selective attention, whereas subject and language had significant influences. To be specific, the normal-hearing and the d10eaf participants mainly gazed at the speaker's eyes and mouth, respectively, in the experiment; moreover, while the normal-hearing participants had to stare longer at the speaker's mouth when they confronted with the unfamiliar language Modern Uygur, the deaf participant did not change their attention allocation pattern when perceiving the two languages. Conclusions Normal-hearing and deaf adults adopt different audiovisual speech perception strategies: Normal-hearing adults mainly look at the eyes, and deaf adults mainly look at the mouth. Additionally, language and task can also modulate the speech perception strategy.

AbstractThe field of cochlear implantation is developing rapidly. In subjects with bilateral profound deafness who gain no benefit from conventional hearing aids the aim of cochlear implantation is to provide a means for them to receive auditory sensations. Throughout the world, most cochlear implant centres are still continuing their research efforts to improve the results with this technique. Although it is still difficult to predict how an individual will perform with a cochlear implant, the success of cochlear implantation can no longer be denied. In this paper, we review some recent papers and reports, and the results of the various Nijmegen cochlear implant studies. Data about subject selection, examinations, surgery and the outcome are discussed. Our results were in good agreement with those of other authors. It can be concluded once again that cochlear implantation is an effective treatment for postlingually deaf adults and children, and for prelingually (congenital or acquired) deaf children with profound bilateral sensorineural deafness.

Objective: To determine audiological and clinical results of cochlear implantation (CI) comparing two populations with single-sided deafness (SSD): post-lingually deaf children between 6 and 12 years of age, and post-lingually deaf adults, in order to evaluate the effect of CI in different age groups.Design: Retrospective case review.Setting: Tertiary clinic.Patients and Method: Twenty-three children and twenty-one adult patients that were candidates for CI with single-side deafness were included. In all cases we evaluate: Speech perception thresholds; disyllabic words test (65 dB SPL) were performed in the modalities S0–SCI–SNH and Auditory Lateralization Test. The Speech, Spatial, and Qualities of Hearing Scale (SSQ) questionnaire was also used. All results were obtained after 12 months of CI activation.Results: In children, the most common etiology was idiopathic sensory-neural hearing loss. They showed positive results in the Auditory Lateralization Test. In the Speech Test, word recognition in noise improved from 2% preoperatively to 61.1% at a mean follow-up of 1 year (S0 condition) in children [test with signal in CI side 60% and signal normal hearing side (plugged) 31%]. The processor was used for >12 h in all cases. With respect to the SSQ questionnaire, parents were more satisfied within the postoperative period than within the preoperative period. For adults, the most common etiology was idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Positive results in the Auditory Lateralization Test were found. With respect to the Speech Test in quiet conditions: Word recognition in noise improved from 5.7% preoperatively to 71.8% at a mean follow-up of 1 year [test with signal in CI side 68% and signal normal hearing side (plugged) 41%]. The processor was used for >12 h. In the SSQ questionnaire, the post-operative results showed a beneficial effect of the CI. No adverse events were reported during the study period. No differences were found between children and adults in all tests in this study.Conclusions: Cochlear implantation in post-lingually deaf adults and children with SSD can achieve a speech perception outcome comparable with CI in conventional candidates. Improvements in spatial hearing were also observed. Careful patient selection and counseling regarding potential benefits are important to optimize outcomes.

The information in optical speech signals is phonetically impoverished compared to the information in acoustic speech signals that are presented under good listening conditions. But high lipreading scores among prelingually deaf adults inform us that optical speech signals are in fact rich in phonetic information. Hearing lipreaders are not as accurate as deaf lipreaders, but they too demonstrate perception of detailed optical phonetic information. This chapter briefly sketches the historical context of and impediments to knowledge about optical phonetics and visual speech perception (lipreading). The authors review findings on deaf and hearing lipreaders. Then we review recent results on relationships between optical speech signals and visual speech perception. We extend the discussion of these relationships to the development of visual speech synthesis. We advocate for a close relationship between visual speech perception research and development of synthetic visible speech.

The Nucleus 24 Contour is a new cochlear implant that has recently undergone clinical trials in adults and children. The Contour uses the same electronics as the previous-generation Nucleus 24 (CI24M) but incorporates a downsized receiver-stimulator and a perimodiolar electrode array. The indications for use were expanded to include children as young as 12 months of age and children 24 months of age and older with severe to profound hearing loss who had open-set word recognition up to 30%. The Contour was successfully implanted in 256 children. The mean level of postoperative speech perception with the Contour was significantly better than the preoperative baseline with hearing aids on all measures. Children who had open-set speech perception in an audition-only condition before surgery demonstrated higher levels of postoperative performance with the Contour than children with no open-set speech perception before surgery.
