Optical Current Transformers (OCTs) and Optical Voltage Transformers (OVTs) are an alternative to the conventional transformers for protection and metering purposes with a much smaller footprint and weight. Their advantages were widely discussed in scientific and technical literature and commercial applications based on the well-known Faraday and Pockels effect. However, the literature is still scarce in studies evaluating the use of optical transformers for power quality purposes, an important issue of power system designed to analyze the various phenomena that cause power quality disturbances. In this paper, we constructed a temperature-independent prototype of an optical voltage transformer based on fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and piezoelectric ceramics (PZT), adequate to be used in field surveys at 13.8 kV distribution lines. The OVT was tested under several disturbances defined in IEEE standards that can occur in the electrical power system, especially short-duration voltage variations such as SAG, SWELL, and INTERRUPTION. The results demonstrated that the proposed OVT presents a dynamic response capable of satisfactorily measuring such disturbances and that it can be used as a power quality monitor for a 13.8 kV distribution system. Test on the proposed system concluded that it was capable to reproduce up to the 41st harmonic without significative distortion and impulsive surges up to 2.5 kHz. As an advantage, when compared with conventional systems to monitor power quality, the prototype can be remote-monitored, and therefore, be installed at strategic locations on distribution lines to be monitored kilometers away, without the need to be electrically powered.

Monitoring electrical power quality has become a priority in the industrial sector background: avoiding unwanted effects that affect the whole performance at industrial facilities is an aim. The lack of commercial equipment capable of detecting them is a proven fact. Studies and research related to these types of grid behaviors are still a subject for which contributions are required. Although research has been conducted for disturbance detection, most methodologies consider only a few standardized disturbance combinations. This paper proposes an innovative deep learning-based diagnosis method to be applied on power quality disturbances, and it is based on three stages. Firstly, a domain fusion approach is considered in a feature extraction stage to characterize the electrical power grid. Secondly, an adaptive pattern characterization is carried out by considering a stacked autoencoder. Finally, a neural network structure is applied to identify disturbances. The proposed approach relies on the training and validation of the diagnosis system with synthetic data: single, double and triple disturbances combinations and different noise levels, also validated with available experimental measurements provided by IEEE 1159.2 Working Group. The proposed method achieves nearly a 100% hit rate allowing a far more practical application due to its capability of pattern characterization.

Variable-Frequency Prony Method in the Analysis of Electrical Power QualityThe article presents a new modification of the the least squares Prony method. The so-called variable-frequency Prony method can be a useful tool for estimating parameters of sinusoidal components, which, in the analyzed signal, are characterized by time-dependent frequencies. The authors propose use of the presented method for testing the quality of electric energy. It allows observation of phenomena which, when using traditional methods, are averaged in the analysis window. The proposed modification of least squares Prony method is based on introduction and specific selection of a frequency matrix. This matrix represents frequencies of estimated components and their variability in time.

The Unified Power Quality Conditioner plays an important role in the constrained delivery of electrical power from a source to an isolated pool of load or from a source to the grid. This article is presented new control approaches for both series and shunt inverter. The proposed control algorithm for series and shunt converters based on FLC and synchronous reference frame theory respectively. The proposed approach eliminates the total harmonic distortions (THD) efficiently, and mitigates sag and swell present in the linear and nonlinear loads.

Abstract Electrical power quality has been an important and growing problem because of the proliferation of nonlinear loads such as power electronic converters in typical power distribution systems in recent years. Particularly, voltage harmonics and power distribution equipment problems result from current harmonics produced by nonlinear loads. The Electronic equipment like, computers, battery chargers, electronic ballasts, variable frequency drives, and switch mode power supplies, generate perilous harmonics and cause enormous economic loss every year. Problems caused by power quality have great adverse economic impact on the utilities and customers. Due to that both power suppliers and power consumers are concerned about the power quality problems and compensation techniques. Power quality has become more and more serious with each passing day. As a result active power filter gains much more attention due to excellent harmonic and reactive power compensation in two-wire (single phase), three-wire (three-phase without neutral), and four-wire (three-phase with neutral) ac power networks with nonlinear loads. However, this is still a technology under development, and many new contributions and new control topologies have been reported in the last few years. It is aimed at providing a broad perspective on the status of APF technology to the researchers and application engineers dealing with power quality issues.

Electrical power demand is increasing at a relatively fast rate over the last years. Because of this increasing demand the power system is becoming very complex. Both electric utilities and end users of electric power are becoming increasingly concerned about power quality. This paper presents a new concept of distributed power flow controller (DPFC), which has been implemented with a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell. In this paper, a PEM fuel cell has been simulated in Simulink/MATLAB and then has been used in the proposed DPFC model. The new proposed DPFC model has been tested on a IEEE 30 bus system.
